Damn, I’m a 6’ dude and I’ve compartmentalized something similar to Lindsey’s elevator event. I was about 20, and looking for a job so I interviewed at this restaurant. The interviewer was some older dude and he was hyping me up like I had this job and I was exactly what he was looking for. He then proceeded to give me a tour of the restaurant, it was basically a giant maze and we end up in a wine cellar of sorts and he changes his whole demeanor and starts touching me and talking about how I needed to convince him how much I needed the job while undoing his belt. I barely knew how to get out of there but I somehow found my way out and he then tried to gaslight me through text message that I was leading him on and I wasn’t in a position to accuse him of anything. I didn’t even know how to deal with it, and I was so grossed out I just blocked his number, deleted the messages and just ignored it. When Lindsey broke down, I remembered how awful it felt, I hadn’t thought about it in years. Thanks for sharing that and I’m sorry you went through it, I can’t imagine the dynamic of not being able to physically overpower the abuser which is what gave me the confidence to get out of there.

      I’m sooo sorry that happened

    • @leolimabeans
      @leolimabeans Год назад +15

@@CM-pf1xcThanks for saying that. I think I downplayed how shameful it felt at the time, as until this day, I haven’t shared that with anyone close to me. I felt like people would make fun of me for not physically assaulting him. In retrospect, I can see he abused his power and put me in a situation where I was in an unfamiliar place with no one else that I saw in the restaurant where any kind of altercation would be unwitnessed and it would be my word against his. I even blamed myself, because while we were in that cellar he told me I looked strong enough to carry the cases of wine and I was eager to prove I was an asset that I picked up a case and joked that I was basically superman and that’s when his attitude changed. That’s what led me to not even consider reporting it.
I’m only really writing this out because I feel semi anonymous.

To Lindsey, I want you to know that the moment in the elevator was your survival instinct and I want you to know that even tho it felt degrading, you were naturally keeping yourself alive. Thank you, Lindsey for being vulnerable and sharing the elevator story. I'm so sorry you had that experience. "Fight, flight, freeze" was mentioned a lot, but I think another common natural response in scary/uncomfortable situations is to "appease." We try to avoid conflict and/or disapproval to please the threat, even at our own expense.
I've always been a people-pleaser and tried to always avoid conflict. I especially worry *so* much about hurting someone's feelings or causing someone temporary embarrassment, despite the misery and regret I know I will fear. I've gotten much better at not feeding that "appease" response, but it's hard to completely override it altogether.
I'm sure many viewers here can relate. And to all of you, I hope you're able to overcome that response in future stressful situations. YOUR needs are more important than pleasing someone that is making you feel uncomfortable, scared, or stressed.❤

  • @A-Oh-Trey

That "disappointment over not speaking truth to power" conversation was so thoughtful. Nothing as major as the stories Lindsey and Devon shared, but I've been in some situations where I heard something problematic being said and didn't speak out against it because I didn't wanna create conflict. Particularly in my early 20s, when I was even more introverted and shy. But I still sometimes feel disappointed when I think back on not speaking up.
Sometimes that "survival instinct" makes us conflict avoidant. I can only imagine if it's your male boss forcing himself on you. So sorry you had to go through that, Lindsey. Respect for sharing your story.

I really appreciate Lindsey being comfortable enough to share her experience. Not many people talk about those situations and it’s a very real thing women deal with. And it sucks because outside of the situation you think what you want to do differently. But in the situation you can’t think. You’re just trying to keep yourself as safe as possible and sometimes that safety is dissociation. Or doing what you think someone wants despite it not being what you want.

I just wanna give a big hug to Lindsey - that assault story was so heartbreaking...! 💝 When you're being put in this kind of situation and you feel like you didn't stand up for yourself or block the person off, you are still NOT to blame! The person crossing the line is 100% at fault. And usually they know pretty darn well how and where to operate so that the "victim" has limited to no options of saying something about it or pushing them off. It's horrible how most women have to deal with this stuff, sometimes on a regular basis. You are so strong girl, don't ever blame yourself for what happened ❤

Lindsey, please please please do not blame yourself for what happened or how you responded. In our lizard brains, in our instincts, the number one voice is usually "how do i survive this". Not "how do i get out of this with dignity" or "how do i make all the bad stuff stop" but "how do i survive this" which is often just complying. It is not a decision of dignity or personhood but purely of what is the shortest path to survival.
So so many of us experience freeze response in those situations and then shame and blame ourselves for it (not least because others shame and blame us) when in reality the likelihood of it having gone differently is so so low.

Each of those things are separate but connected and it’s important to let all 3 aspects of the self check in with each other. That’s why treating it like a traditional western workout is so hard: it’s not meant to be an itinerary, it’s a journey.

I worked at a restaurant for 3 years it was a hole in the wall but known by many celebrities from the state I live in. The owner was an older man in his 70s wellllllll respected. He would grab different body parts when you’d walk by him, he came into the bathroom when I was in there one day and felt me up while I pushed myself against the wall wanting to crawl out of my skin until he said “I’m just kidding” and walked out, he pulled my pants down in the kitchen ( my underwear came with them) in front of my sister (who was also assaulted by him many times as she worked for him well before me) but at the time we were homeless and we were trying so hard to just make money so we could get a place to live and it was looked at as such an “honor” to work there that no one said anything and had we would anyone even believe us? I know for sure we weren’t his first victims and I’m sure we won’t be the last! I just adore you and your rawness Lindsey thank you for opening the door to these conversations!❤️

I have never been able to clean it that day. I think it’s because my mom always left the dishes for me to do at home whenever I felt like it since it was “my chore” but nobody else ever did it. Dreams you can control and are aware you're dreaming are just as tiring. Being a very light sleeper you rarely wake up rested.

I was raised extremely religious and sheltered. I was *barely* allowed to watch Nickelodeon as a kid. So I barely got to watch Ned’s. But I loved it. Getting to watch this pod as an adult isn’t just fun as an adult, but does something for the poor sheltered kid in me. Thanks yall 🎉

What Lindsey said about the elevator situation was so real and it’s so sad that victims feel like they have to make the perpetrator feel like what they did was okay out of being SCARED. it’s been afraid of what could happen next and this was such a real revelation that people have to deal with every single day and it’s so unfortunate :(

Hello friends, it's been so many years since I saw them, I'm a fan of Ned's manual and just a few days ago I finished watching the complete series again, I mean that they haven't changed much, physically, I'm from Mexico and if I was surprised to find them, I send greetings and I hope they continue with this project. Cheers to Moze😍.

31 minutes, i might be in before one of them says this, but there are psychological theories that we have more nightmares when we feel like we're in physically/emotionally/socially safe places in our lives, which allows our unconscious to go to those dark dream places for processing.
But her Dev dream sounds like her unconscious feeling like he is continuing to reject her even though he's cordial and warm to her in real life. Which seems to track. If they're not playing up their natural chemistry for the pod, he's definitely the one who is why they havent tried again.

OMG Lindsey, I also have reoccurring nightmares almost every night in the same places, and one of them is an airport! I also have BPD, PTSD, and past substance abuse issues so maybe it’s from a combo of any of that 29:05
