Clever-is a nice quick release trick! Your demonstrations are so incredibly clear!! BTW if you twist each coil by 180 degrees (alternating overhand/underhand loops) from the previous one the line will not kink when uncoiled (even with the short length in the demo, the line has kinking). This works with electrical cables as well. Learned this courtesy of USN.
Yeah this guy may be a knot master, but he has much to learn in the field of coiling his rope. How he does it may be okay for very short lengths, but for tougher rope or cables and for longer lengths this technique is going to cause problems. Sorry for being pedantic.
@@EaglePicking I mostly agree with that as I used to have a 100' extension cord that I put through all sorts of methods. Now I pay someone to handle the bushes and they use gas - go figure :)
This must be your favorite knot I see you put many videos on this same knot all the time....I would figure 8 that coil though so it doesn't get tangled up when uncoiling it... that small of a section of rope is fine but not for anything larger.
Why coil when you can just half the length until you get it to the half-length you desire then use this nut! That is a good knot! Coiling put twist into ropes and extensions chords for my extension cords I just half them to my desire length and drape them onto a clothes hanger! No twistin the line at all! I do the same thing with a collapsible hose.
I don't see any issues with coiling extension chords. If you do it the same way every time the inside wires will adapt to that orientation and last for decades. In fact, my Dad has a couple that are over 40 years old and just as good as new. The literal limitation on how many times you can do it is purely a matter of how many times you can plug and unplug the cable and the physical breakdown of the chemical components.
Not a good idea. If the coil becomes bigger and heavier, the loop you use to suspend it will open bc the loose end still can slip. Believe me. Any knot only works within certain parameters like weight, diameter, surface smoothness, torsional rigidity, elasticity etc. etc.
You are absolutely right, however I have used this "fireman's coil" with lighter ropes for many many years and in many cases it is very easy and useful.
Some people tie a simple overhand stopper knot in the end and then it simply cannot slip through. The other thing some people do is use the loose end to tie a half hitch around the hanging loop. Also incredibly effective.
Not good for electrical cords. Great for ropes and cordage. That quick release is too tight and the thin copper wires will eventually break at that small loop. Creating an arc internally that eventually combusts inside. Watch how electricians and roadies do it. Big open loop. Just hang it as-is or use Velcro or short rope to tie it.
@@ruidadgmailcanada8508 You can also typically plug an extension cord into itself. The velcro is mostly useful for cords and cables that can't be plugged into themselves, although you can often times do a gentle loop around the cross section of cable to keep it from uncoiling. That's usually a large enough radius that you're not kinking the wires.
Your tie-off was great, but the way you coiled the rope is incorrect. Check out how sound technicians coil their 100 foot cables!! I enjoyed the video regardless, and thanks for providing the viewers with this neat tie-off trick.
I’ve coiled rope. This person is either left handed or does not coil rope very well at all… Hold the coil in your right hand and coil the rope with your left, twisting it as you go go to lay it on the coil properly.
Nice and neat coil but best for short piece of rope or cord, otherwise may twist or tangle when unreel it. Often had problems with short cords not enough for a hank.
nice finish. A shame that some people have judged you in the comments and said “the way you coil is wrong”. It may look “different” to how they would do it but it’s your rope and your method and in the end you finish with a coiled, tied off rope so how can it be wrong? There may be other ways to tie rope, but I acknowledge this is your way. Ignore the judges as when they point a finger of judgment there are 3 pointing back at them 🫵 😊
Right, but this is OK for 50- 100 meters of good nylon line (150- 300 ft) BUT - would require 5-6 wraps around the hank, before making the little "bight" (loop) for hanging.
@@n40tom Weight of a much larger coil could not be secure with just one wrap around the hank, but 4 or 5 wraps, THEN cinche the small bight ( loop), would be secure for a longer line ( in a much larger coil).
@@n40tom With 200' of rope you'd likely be better off with just doing daisy chains. It's a lot easier to do and a lot easier to undo and depending upon what you're tying off, you don't necessarily even need to free the entire rope to tie it.
Except how the handle isn't really a handle and will come undone. I like to do an extra daisy thread, twist it on itself, then push it back over the last loop. This make a nice handle that won't come undone. I wish to god people knew that at the gym.
There are better ways, this will introduce twist into a braided rope shown in to video. This is easy to prove, take some small braided rope and wrap it around your fingers in a coil. Pull it off your fingers and you will see these little twists or loops binding up on the rope. A braided rope has similar properties to a cable or extension cord and that is why many people on the comment reference those mothers. The method in the video will work fine for a 3 strand rope.

Hello friend
I wish everyone knew that trick. Some people think it’s fussy but it’s the only way to coil big lengths without a whole team twisting the thing.
I like how you show the knot tying from your prospective. Some youtubers show it from the viewers prospective and it takes me longer to catch on.
When I watched a Japanese tshirt fold that way, I had to record it, then turn it mirror position in order to figure it out! 🥴

This induces all sorts of kinks in braided rope! Figure-eights instead.

Great knot. I will use it for my earphone. Thank you.
Awesome, thank you!

Rope... v.s. cable... 😅
@@NeogarcilasoHe's right, though. Ropes can benefit from the cable coil.
It’s not incorrect, per se, just morally wrong…
I'm guessing they do it the way knitters coil yarn - called a butterfly? Kind of a figure 8? Then you can pull it out a small bit at a time.

I counted four twists when the rope in this video was wound.
For longer ropes you really should French Coil it prior to locking it off with the slip knot.

Very useful trick. Probably more useful than a six foot rope !

Nice alternative facts.
So many criticizers! Haha I think this is a really cleaver and quick way of securing a rope!
It's a fine method for relatively short ropes. I still think that daisy chaining is better for rope personally.

This also works for ethernet cables, even fiber - just be gentle
Could the same knot be used for a extension cord?
For extension cords, try a chain sinnet.
It weakens the copper inside the cord at risk of eventual fire.
Look how roadies and electricians do it.
NO
You should daisy chain them.

Not how my instructor taught me. Of course we did not have to deal with a 10:foot rope. Now toss that rope!

Another example of someone complaining about HOW they are being given FREE lessons/information on RUclips. 🙄
don't do this, it'll put twists in the rope and will be difficult to un-coil
I mean, this only works with a short length of stiff rope.

This is language agnostic.
Well, never has blaring music been so magically fucking annoying during a relaxing simple rope-tying lesson. But, mute.
