    What I love the most about the Oberyn/mountain scene is, we knew it was coming and it still shocked us. Ned stark, the red wedding, even leading up to the fight: "you could at least wear a helmet" "today is not the day I die" Bronn even says: "all it would take is one mistake and I'm dead." The show is screaming at as about Oberyn's death and that shit still got me.

    Up until this point, all the big major events of the show had been spoiled for me (i.e. Ned's death, the Red Wedding, even the Purple Wedding). So because I started the show late, already with too much information, I knew what was coming. Although it still sucked watching those moments unfold, a lot of the impact of those events got withered away for me.
    This was the first time I felt like absolute garbage after watching an episode of Game of Thrones. I felt so bad that it carried with me to the following day and I couldn't shake it off like a bad case of fleas. The strange thing is (and I have no idea how this is possible) but it made me love the show even more for doing that to me. I'm going to miss this show a lot by this upcoming June.

    When I was a kid in the 80s Raiders of Lost Ark end scene with the ark opening, ghost fire, and peoples face melting I could only watch one time as a kid. I hated watching it even though Raiders was a favorite and I'd watch it almost every day during summer. I would go out of my room for this scene and come back when it was over. Watching the end to this fight in this episode brought up same feeling I had as a child. I love GOT and all episodes have been viewed multiple times except this one. Edward Stark losing a head? No problem. Red Wedding? Piece of cake. But this is the worst. I have always avoided this scene, still hate watching it. Here we go. Ahhhhhh!

      The things the Mountain says while he had his thumbs shoved into Oberyn's eye sockets make it so much worse. He says that he raped Oberyn's sister and crushed her head just like that.
      Hopefully Oberyn was not able to hear it in the middle of his suffering. Not only was him going through a hellish death but he was also being told that his sister went through something even worse, the Mountain had her child's brains on his hands while he did it all ... as if the scene was not horrifying enough.

    • @ceilingfanenthusiast6041
      @ceilingfanenthusiast6041 5 лет назад +3

      I don't know man. I literally just finished the books last week and at the end of Dance it seems like Varys wants what's best. He trained Aegon to be a perfect king amd Varys thinks that's he could be, so he's doing what he has to to help. Sure its a bit fucked up, lile how he killed pycelle and decided to kill Kevin with a crossbow but I'd say that he's still a good guy

    • @elle19ism
      @elle19ism 5 лет назад +5

      You both make good points. But I recently read a comment on another video that talked about how Varys himself said that Kevan was doing a great job of bringing stability back to the realm and correcting all of Cersei's mistakes. Yet, Varys decided to kill him even though Kevan was doing good for the realm (and without the ruthlessness of his brother).
      The comment further explained that Varys had various opportunities to fully serve the realm but didn't. He could have: stopped feeding information to Aerys, furthering his paranoia and madness; worked with Rhaegar to bring his father to "early retirement" so Rhaegar can start his rule as peacefully as possible; continued to help bring peace during Robert's rule (I'm sure he knew what Cersei was planning and could have done something to stop it).
      So, like Littlefinger, he wants the realm to be in chaos so he can take advantage of that chaos by giving a "solution". Though, I think Littlefinger is slightly worse

    I found your discussion about Sansa's plot arc very interesting - the difficulty that the show had to reconcile is that they have combined her character with the fake Arya (Sansa's friend Jeyne Poole). Just like they combined Gendry and Edric Storm. It's awkward, but necessary in order to reduce the complicated number of plot lines in the book for TV.

    It’s so nice to hear you guys and read comments that are so positive about game of thrones instead of book readers who complain about literally everything (even though I’m reading them right now and love them of course) like the channel Idea of Ice and Fire. I can’t take them man it’s so negative

    33:58 it's based on Wushu, a Chinese form of Martial Arts prioritizing fast, fluid movement and attacks over power. Pedro actually trained with a Master in preparation for his role and performed a number of his own stunts.
    Jet Li and Donnie Yen were highly proficient, as is Ray Park.

    The dialogue in this episode is some of the best in the show. And, all these awesome conversations all take place here, in this one episode. The very next episode has some of the best dialogue, also. It's a close second to this one. 👍😊 And then there's the Mountain vs Viper, this is peak Game of Thrones right here.

    Tywin wrote the letter pardoning Jorah Mormont. If you watch the most recent Small Council meeting before this event, they are talking about Jorah and Varys tells Tywin that Jorah has become devoted to the Mother of Dragons. “Fetch my quill”, Tywin says before the scene ends. That is when he writes the pardon, forging Robert’s name and using his wax seal.

    The Mountains sword has an Irish Ring Pommel?
    Oberyns spear moves looks like Chinese Kung Fu. Hexagram pole or something similar. Also the stunt double wears a very different wig and is 2 sizes smaller.
    So you are allowed to get new weapons in a trail by combat?
    It sucks when your champion had his own agenda.
    As an ultimate FU to Tywin. Jamie should agree to inherit Castery Rock. Then give it to Bronn and have him fight the Mountain. Bronn would probably fight the Mountain for the rock. And he wont let his emotion get in the way.
    The biggest paradox of the fight is while Oberyn is so certain he would win. He still poisons his spear in case he lost and died. The cockiness and carefulness are both on display.

    Just the shock I felt watching this for the first time. The acting by everyone in this episode is amazing. One of my favorite episodes of the show. You guys are almost done so what will you do between finishing season 5 and season 8. My week will be incomplete without these GoT breakdowns

    I have an unpopular opinion. I personally disagree with the idea that Sansa's character regressed in season 5 with her story with Ramsey. I believe that in this episode, Little finger had fooled not only Sansa, but the audience as well, into thinking that Sands had grown and became a true player of the game. She was manipulated into this move by Little finger, and it makes her seem like such a clever player, but in truth, it would have been a smarter play to betray littlefinger, but she was blinded by his manipulations over the past couple seasons, as he made all these shows of loyalty towards her, when in the end, he was just playing the game. Little finger never saw her as a protege, he saw her as just another pawn, and that's shown by him sending sansa to marry Ramsey.
    The true moment Sansa became a player was when she realized she couldn't trust Littlefinger AFTER he gave her to Ramsey. That was when she realized the truth of the man she trusted. She realized she was just a pawn to little finger, and as soon as she gets free from Ramsey, you can see her turn the tables, and manipulate Littlefinger, turning him into her pawn instead of the other way around. She realized she was mearly a valuable pawn in Littlefinger's eyes, and used that against him in seaosn 6, getting him to basically use all his power and connections to benefit her, instead of the other way around, and when she caught wind if Littlefinger trying to manipulate her again in season 7, she decided to put an end to it, because she no longer needed him.
    He taught her to play the game, but not directly. She didn't become a player in this episode, she was still an unknowing pawn. She became a player by realizing she was a pawn, and using that information to become a queen, not when she furthered Littlefinger's goals in this episode.
    At this point, my comment will probably be so burried few people will see it, but oh well

    Hahaha it is so hilarious they end the season with what seems like Sansa becoming a player, finally moving into a good position and a great plot.. Sophie must have been stoked
    And then nope! We need to be shocking and inserting her into a book thing and derailing her story is better

    I had no clue who Pedro was before Oberyn, but that role instantly made me a fan girl! For such a short screen time, he easily and quickly became one of my favorite characters in the show. 4 more seasons and I don’t know how many years it’s been and he still is.

    Also, how long does it take to animate a whole episode!?! It must take a while!

    I think Littlefinger knew Sansa would be grateful for him killing Lysa and that’s why he kept making moves on her in the Vale. He knew Lysa would already be paranoid, so he figured he would confirm her suspicions and feed into her jealousy by kissing Sansa in plain sight, successfully enraging Lysa and pitting her against Sansa. Now her own aunt isn’t even safe and Littlefinger can finally get rid of her without having to worry about Sansa whose only choice left at that point is to trust Littlefinger and side with him. It’s kind of his signature move if you think about it- pitting Lysa against Caitlyn, then Lysa against Sansa, and eventually trying to pit Sansa against Arya.

    I loved Oberyn so much. I've memorized almost all of his lines on the show. To this day, I still can't watch his death. When he was dying, I closed the screen with my hand. It's been years, and I'm still not over it.
