Really appreciate your video. I just rescued an abused 85 350x and plan to restore it. It won’t be OEM correct but as nice and new as I can make it. I was having trouble identifying factory colors on certain parts so your video helped immensely. Thanks!!!

Just seeing that 86 brings a tear to my eye ...That was my bike back 87-90 , I was only 13 and that thing was a beast . I was a good rider for my age and cause of my size it took me everywhere I wanted to go.
We never had any issue other than my chain breaking one outing . My Uncle was part of the Dune Patrol and was able to buy them after they switched to all quads for way cheap.
One of the best Hondas made imho and the headlights were awesome for night rides.

This is an awesome video of the comparison between the 85/86 models. I remember my Dad got me a Like new, all original, with tool kit and manual, an 85 250 ES Big Red from a good fellow that had an 85 and a 86 ATC 350x. To me back then they was the ultimate 3wheeler to have and show off on the weekend. I really miss those days.

When I was a kid my friends dad owned a Honda dealership, he always had the latest, didn't to have my own to ride, had plenty on hand.
I remember the ATC 70's well, fond memories.

Thank you for this video! I learned that my 85 350X has the O.E. Front tire on it still. Pro Vector 101
Seeing those ATC70s in the back ground really takes me back. That was the 1st motorized anything I rode at 4 years old. It was in the family for a very long time and Unfortunately my brother in law sold it without anyone else knowing. Also Grew up riding a ATC110 and ATC200S.

Great video! My first atc was a 110. I tore the crap out of dads yard. Then he came home with a 185 thinking we could ride together. I think we rode together like twice then the 185 was all I rode. Went everywhere on that thing. The chains always popped off on those 185 and I had to leave it one night and when I came back it was gone. I rode every model from the 70, 125, 200 and 250. All my buddy’s had them. I did have the pleasure of riding an 85 350 when I was 14 at the dealership. My mom was ready to buy it for me but when I cracked the throttle first time I got off and said mom I don’t think I’m ready for that! Lol

I learned a ton from this video! I had no idea that a swing arm skid plate even existed for a 350x, and I didn’t know about a lot of the subtle differences. I did want to share with you however, that for 85 and likely 86 you could purchase a brake master cylinder guard that could be other chrome or black I think... I know chrome for sure because I have one. Another big difference is with the clutch levers on the engine itself. Not the clutch lever you grab with your hand, the lever the clutch cable attaches to on the engine. They are different, and I figured I’d point that out. I do have a few questions about my 85 that I figured you might have an answer to? First off, you need to know I’ve rebuilt the top end, and then split the cases because of a little piece of aluminum caught in the gears (not gonna explain because it’s a long story). So I have torn my engine apart two DIFFERENT times. Immediately after I finished putting it back together the second time, where I split the cases, it started burning oil. At first I thought it was just assembly lube or excess oil in the cylinder burning off, but it never stopped and it has gotten worse over time. It is now so bad that I am afraid that I’m gonna run it out of oil when I go for a long ride. There is some other stuff you should know too. When I tore it apart the FIRST time, when I did the top end, I replaced two valve guides and 2 valves I believe, as well as piston rings, and I honed the cylinder. When I did the valve guides, I had to ream out the hole for one of the valve guides because it was wayyy too tight, and I reamed it out just a tad too big. Looking back at it, I should have just used heat to expand the head, and freezes the guides, but I didn’t. Anyways, I glued the guide in, and thought nothing of it. To this day the engine still has immaculate compression, and its getting oil into the cylinder when it obviously shouldn’t be. If anyone who may have an answer read this far, please share it with me. I’m going to tear it down soon, but I want to see what y’all think.

@@ThisOldTrike haha, God bless you and your beautiful family!
I love trikes too. It's the funnest way to end up in a hospital. Lol
I've had to ask myself what is my problem? Am I jealous or something?
Well, after trying to find the words, this is what irks me..
You've got a huge collection! But it seems almost like it's not yours. It comes off to me not so much as a collection but like you are a newly hired part time curator of a Honda exclusive 3 wheeler museum that's not open to the public.. but set up more like an erotic only fans page on RUclips for validation and attention.
Not trying to be mean. It's just I think if I owned just a handful of your machines, I could make a human connection to each one with intimate knowledge to be shared on a RUclips channel. I think too much of anything drowns out the specialness.
It's like if I had a channel with me and a harem of beautiful women but I had trouble getting their names right.
      Anyway! Keep on keeping on.
I really would consider making what you've got into a legit museum.

    • @ThisOldTrike
      @ThisOldTrike  2 года назад +1

Ok, this is interesting. I'm curious about why, or what about my videos makes it seem as if they're not mine? Not saying or asking that in a wtf kind of way, just curious what I'm doing or saying that makes it seem that way.
Regarding the validation or attention thing... I definitely am not doing this to be validated because I really don't care. But regarding the attention part... maybe? What I mean by that is, it's been really cool putting myself out there and meeting, even if it's only through social media, a lot of other like minded enthusiasts and many of them have become what I would consider good, good friends. So, the attention has brought a lot of valued connections and relationships with people that I would have not had otherwise.
And you're right... I have too many fricking three wheelers and I won't deny that. I often question my sanity and wonder why the hell I'm doing this. The answer to that is that I set a stinking goal almost 20 years ago to collect one of each Honda three wheeler.... I didn't know that that meant as many as it did... but 5 years ago I kinda started doing it and here I am. I'm in possession of all but one variation. I technically own them all though, because last week I bought the last one I need, but it's in England and I'm working on getting it here to the states. Once I get it here and have the complete set... spike the football... do the victory dance and fill my attention cup to overflowing... I will probably thin things out a bit... I've tried to think about what would stay and what would go... and only about 1/3 get re-homed...
In the meantime... my plan is to keep documenting the differences between the model years... I've got plans to do other types of informative videos also. I'm not running a museum... but I'm sharing my collection with the public through video? I've had lots of positive feedback from people who are thankful for the content I'm putting out... so I'm thankful for that and for them I will keep doing what I'm doing. It's keeping me accountable to different goals and projects because now I have this audience of people keeping tabs on me and wondering "hey, what's up with the 250R build?" "hey, how's the 88 Big Red coming??" Things like that.
So, maybe down the road we could do a museum... but who knows what will happen based on current events. I've watched a few of your videos and we've been down many of the same rabbit holes you've been down. I thought 45 was going to come in and save the day... but now we're just here with an empty bag wondering what the heck just happened and asking all the questions. I'm not making 5 year plans anymore... I'm thinking 6 months down the road at this point and adding "God willing" after all that. So... we'll see! In the meantime I'm going to keep on keeping on like you said... it's all we can do.

Very good video I have always been curious on year differences...especially the 350X. The one thing I always thought was interesting as you mentioned was the baffles in the cases I think they had some oil starvation issues in the 85’ if you rode wheelies often so in 86’ they added some baffle or something in the case halves. Pretty cool.
I use to occasionally see if I could spot the differences in the generic photos from shop manuals lol...thought I was the only one for a while.

Not sure if you are interested in doing a video about mixing parts on 350x’s. What work what doesn’t. What you might have to do to make it work. My friends 86 had it i might have some old pictures showing it somewhere but that was over 20 years ago. For some reason which we could never figure out my 85 was a lot fast. 350X's aren't liquid cooled. They do have an oil cooler though, and the oil cooler is behind the left tank shroud (shifter side). Regarding 87's, I've never seen a picture of one besides the lone promotional pic that Honda put out. I truly feel they never them to the public's hands. If any were ever made, they were destroyed before being distributed.
