Gordon Mitchell "Now" isn't a thought? If you don't think, are you there? That was UG's response to Descartes' infamous axiom. And it's a question worth meditating on. If there is no thought then there is no experience. Therefore one cannot experience the "now" without the ego, assuming ego and thought are synonymous as you suggested. If there is an experience then there is ego there. There is an experiencer. You are telling me to exist in something without experiencing it. Temporarily disregarding the fact that the "something" in question (the now) is itself just a thought, how do I do that? More importantly why would I? To stop thinking altogether is to cease to be. Woosh, the fire blows out. Nothing. No mind. Not an experience of no mind, there can be no such thing. It's a lie. "When you are busy thinking, you miss the fact that you are" The fact that you are can be translated to the knowledge that you are, which can be translated to the THOUGHT that you are, which is what being is. It is thought. So if ego and thought are synonymous, then ego and being are synonymous. Being implies non-being just as self implies other.
When you are not aware of the 'thinking', awareness of the 'now' becomes reality, and although not a thought, you are! You don't cease to be. You transcend into awareness of self. The inner self, the source of self, and the oneness of the self is all that there is. That oneness is with the whole that there is. If you say 'I think therefore I am' you are saying that without thought you can not be. But if you say (as I did) that 'I am therefore I think', you are then awareness 'all that there is' and the mind 'ego', the wanting thoughts, the striving thoughts, the 'I am happy or unhappy' thoughts that fill our minds, hide the 'now' from you, and you then rely on whatever you think to function. If you are aware of the 'now' you are! and therefore can chose to think, and be as awake to all that exists, the now! There is is no time. All is now. Time is an ego invention, that allows for control by those who benefit from it.
Gordon Mitchell You're still promoting an experience, while at the same time demonizing the experiential structure (mind) by equating it with ego. How can there be awareness without thought? Awareness is an experience. There is no such thing as thoughtless experience. The thought of the experiencer must be present. Do this, don't do that, be aware of this, lose your awareness of that...and you will transcend into a higher state of awareness....big deal! The desire to evolve spiritually is a rejection of your current state of being! Even the desire for peace of mind precludes your mind from being at peace in this moment, because it defines your current state as being not at peace. I can't stand it when people refer to the fundamental "self" as such. Higher self, inner self, divine self....that is simply and blatantly a projection of egoic attributes onto the pure thoughtless life force that flows through all of us. "You", that is, the thinker/experiencer, do not beat your heart, and to refer to the force that does as your true "self" is an egoic perversion of a divine phenomenon. There's nothing "selfish" about the fundamental energetic essence of life. UG sometimes insists that no such essence exists. He is playing with words. This light that I am speaking of is real, and you can see it during meditation. It is the soul, and it is all one. Sole soul. Both of these words are derived from the latin "sol" meaning light. Fundamentally all is one, it's true, but this oneness cannot experience (or be aware of) itself, because it is thoughtless and timeless. This is not to say you can't have an earth-shattering experience of boundary dissolution in which you feel your implicit connection to everything, but this is still a thought-induced experience. It's beautiful, but as it comes so does it go. And the higher you get, the harder you fall. You may as well take LSD and save yourself all the hassle if that's all you're after. All these stories of holy men do nothing but piss me off. If there are yogis who have achieved states of perpetual orgasm, or acquired the power to materialize things out of thin air (such as Sai Baba shooting flowers out of his palms into the crowd), then why aren't these benevolent sorcerers conjuring up plates of food for the thousands of starving children in the third world country they're living in? A spiritual state that involves perpetual sexual orgasm? Are you f*cking kidding me? How SELF indulgent can it get? UG has a chip on his shoulder for good reason.
