- A popular song from 1864.
Words and music by Stephen C. Foster.
One of Foster’s last songs.
Lyrics
1. Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me, starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee
Sounds of the rude world heard in the day, lulled by the moonlight have all passed away
Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song, list while I woo thee with soft melody
Gone are the cares of life’s busy throng, beautiful dreamer, awake unto me
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me
2. Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea, mermaids are chaunting the wild lorelie
Over the streamlet vapors are borne, waiting to fade at the bright coming morn
Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart, e’en as the morn on the streamlet and sea
Then will all clouds of sorrow depart, beautiful dreamer, awake unto me
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me

How lovely! My mother taught music and was a piano teacher in our home as long as she could. I remember her fondly whenever I hear these songs. Thank you!
Ah....probably one the most beautiful songs Foster ever wrote. It is little mystery why it is so beloved! I call it his 9th symphony--because it was kinda in a new realm that was different than his other famous songs. I mean the melody, and even the accompaniment was more pianistic than usual! And of course, this, sadly happens to be his very last song published! Thanks for the upload with the sheet music! (I think the sheet music to this one looks as beautifully wishful as the song itself! 😃)
I had no idea this song was so old! I thought it was like from my grandparents time like 1920s/30s/40s
actressbrookesingleton anything past 1900s feels worng
I love these songs so much. I find myself singing for hours to them every night lately. Thank you for making these songs available in this format.
Although these two programmes have absolutely nothing whatsoever in common, I have heard this song in both Anne With an E and Sam and Cat, and never noticed it in Sam and Cat until now, when sung by the very famous Ariana Grande,
(I had to take a break from that show, as it made me cringe like hell) but it is still amazing that I eventually noticed, and never knew that the song was real in Anne With An E, and not just composed for it.
I had heard this melody, before, but I never knew that it had lyrics. It's pretty, like a lullaby.
We had to learn this and other classic ballads in Junior High School Chorus. Nowadays, of course, you'd NEVER get kids to learn these songs. Result? They have no knowledge of our shared cultural heritage. I've had conversations with young people that exposed such shocking and appalling ignorance of American history and culture that I was literally taken aback. It's a sad commentary on the decline of our educational system and the lack of standards. No wonder we're in the shape we're in!
Agree. We have a treasure trove of music to appreciate. My life goal is to bring it forward. The people who created these wonderful songs were forging and documenting the American psyche. By listening and understanding we become able to act consciously. Good to hear from you!
Danny Heller I’m in middle school but thankfully my grandmother taught me everything
