  • In 2008 a number of replica Roman arrowheads were produced especially for the Roman archery display at St Fagans: National History Museum, to show what Roman arrowheads looked like when new.
Careful conservation work on some of the Museum's Roman arrowheads revealed enough original surface detail to help us work out how the Romans had made them. The Museum's blacksmith at St Fagans was keen to produce the replicas in the same way, and he experimented until he could produce copies that closely matched the originals.

Cynhyrchwyd nifer o bennau saethau Rhufeinig yn arbennig ar gyfer yr arddangosfa saethyddiaeth Rufeinig yn Sain Ffagan: Amgueddfa Werin Cymru i ddangos sut fyddai pennau saethau Rhufeinig newydd sbon yn edrych.
Yn sgil gwaith cadwraeth gofalus ar rai o bennau saethau Rhufeinig yr Amgueddfa, gwelwyd digon o fanylion gwreiddiol i ddatgelu'r broses gynhyrchu a ddefnyddiodd y Rhufeiniaid. Roedd gof Amgueddfa Sain Ffagan am greu copïau yn yr un modd a bu'n arbrofi nes ei fod yn medru creu copïau oedd yn debyg iawn i'r gwreiddiol.

This makes a lot of sense. Romans were very industrialized and might have factories for making arrowheads using dies (or whatever the proper term for that thing is). The Medieval English tended to outsource to local craftsmen and thus needed a simpler design. I bet the Roman 4-edge head pierces maile/armor better than a wedge-like bodkin.

Omg, I was reading the top line and thought I was having a stroke! I forgot how crazy Welsh looks, I live on the other side of the planet so the only time I see Welsh is when I read H. P. Lovecraft. Cthulhu fhtagn!
