    I was very lucky and met a great realtor on my scouting trip. He was able to find me an apartment when I was back in the US. He sent me photos and did a visit for me. It worked out very well. I live in Madeira so maybe it's easier here. I have a different perspective as I prefer to work with someone I trust and who has connections.

      As usual, this is another excellent comment and insight. It took a few realtors, but we found one we really liked and used her to buy and sell our property.

    My advice is 'buy one'. Don't waste your time and money trying to find a rental. Portuguese will over charge you for an energetic drainer without heat, most of the time. Olivais is a very quiet and nice residential neighborhood, close to the airport but you don't hear the planes and don't see them because they their path is over Alcântara and San Antonio, Alvalade.
