Fannie Brice came over much different than I expected. I like her. She photographed well, was slender, vivacious, could be understated, delightful sense of humor and limited the facial eye tricks. She talked naturally in a low key fashion with authority. I could see how she was popular with men and women who liked to laugh, but she didn't overdo it. She just knew the score. Like Gypsy Rose Lee. I was born too late to see her in films, drat! They say she always dressed beautifully. Thank you Geno's House of Rare Films, regardless of how you came into possession of this one.

So you and Gypsy Rose Lee were born too late to see Fanny Brice in films? Me too. Her only TV appearance was on June 12 1950 five days after I was born and I don’t remember it very well. Then she died.

Fannie Brice truly an iconic comedian and entertainer! Love her in this movie essentially about a fight between two tough Irish guys! Robert Armstrong fine in his role and Fannie's brother really hilarious! Thanks for showing this old Hollywood movie!😊

Brice's voice and personality make this one well-worth watching. The plot is of secondary interest.

The film is a glorious excuse to see Fanny perform. Harry Green does a nice turn too. And the cinematography, so clean, Struss shot Sunrise!!!

Fanny didn't sound like Barbra, but had a great voice also.

Yeah, when I heard Barbra play her, I thought she was all wrong for the role. But she made it her own, I guess. No complaints there, just wondered why she didn't play her as Fanny really was! ♥

The nightclub set reminds me of German Expressionist films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Fanny Brice is extraordinarily talented and what a personality. You can see why she was a great Star. A privilege to watch in this creaky old melodrama.

Didn’t Barbra Streisand play a similar character in one of her movies? She became a manager of a prize fighter. I think it was called “The Main Event.” Coincidence?

    • @lawsonj39

No coincidence. Fanny Brice was the inspiration for Funny Girl.

Like myself, it appears that many folks had never seen this film. In this one, we can experience a more rounded picture of Fannie beyond her famous clown persona. She is attractive, beautifully dressed, attentive, and warm. I wonder if Barbra Streisand viewed this film when preparing for her role as Fanny in Funny Girl.
