Hard to imagine a couple of years later the city would be empty and many of the people in the video would die. So sad it look like it was a beautiful city during that time.
Saigon in the South in the past and during the Republic of Vietnam, the people were very gentle but truly civilized and prosperous. It was a proud moment for the people of the South to be prosperous but always exude peace and gentleness. Saigon is also the pearl of the Far East that has settled in the hearts of all Vietnamese people the love for their homeland, whether living or dead. whether far away or present. If only the Civilized regime had not changed, the people in society today would not scream and cry to the sky like today. Thank you this clip for the younger generation to know and understand. It is truly precious!
What is your opinion about Ho Chi Minh? Seriously, without irony or provocation, I really want to know your opinion about Ho Chi Minh since you praised Saigon so much, I don't know much about Indochina.
@@Tod_xCambodia is more advanced now, but if the Khmer Rouge never happened - Cambodia would have the same GDP as Thailand and a population of 25+ million (it currently has 16 million). In the past, it had the same gdp per capita as south korea, and was one of the fastest growing countries in the world. Because of war, the country did not develop for 30 years until 2000. Cambodia had a lot of movies and singers that were popular in neighboring countries, so it likely could have spread even further if it wasn’t killed off during the Khmer Rouge.
The thousands of refugees that had already fled the Khmer Rouge had a good idea. However, people were so fed up of the war, they felt even if the Khmer Rouge won, there would be a return to stability hence the cheering of the Khmer Rouge when they entered the city. But, yeah, nobody in their worst dreams knew what was coming.
@@jonhart7630Typical conformist thinking of the 60s/70s, this type of thinking gave space for monsters to come to power in several countries and for the counterculture to weaken the West.
@jonhart7630 *utopian (I put it wrong, it was supposed to be utopian instead of conformist) but yes, the 60s/70s were at the height of the counterculture and the revolt against tradition, and all these Previously, they supported socialist ideas, the "ideology of the future", expecting a radical left-wing group to do something good in power is at least naive, I don't blame them for the pressure of war, to see how the counterculture of the 60s/70s were involved with socialism, there was even a rock/metal song, I don't remember exactly, celebrating the capture of Phnom Penh by the Khmer Rouge
As beautiful and vibrant as this society was, it is important to recognize that Khmer society in this period was characterized by a massive disparity between urban and rural life (rooted in the consequences of French imperialism) that, in conjunction with the systematic corruption of the Lon Nol regime and the US bombing campaign, would directly facilitate the conditions for the nightmare that followed only a year after. It's rather reductive and falsifying to depict Cambodia as a paradise ruptured by a guerrilla movement emerging from nothingness; antagonisms and contradictions were brewing below the surface for decades that handed this colorful world its death sentence long before 1975. The only way the incomprehensible horrors that characterized the Khmer Rouge can be avoided is by pursuing a society and institutions capable of resolving those contradictions, otherwise, history is effectively bound to repeat itself. Nevertheless, wonderful footage, beautiful country, and eternal condolences to the Khmer nation and the two million who were murdered under the barbaric communist regime. Thank you for posting and love the channel 🙏
@laobailong8888 Cambodia was a feudaliistic society long before the French arrived. The society consisted of large land holders- including Pol Pot's family - who exploited smaller land holders to work for them at harvest time. On top of this you had the very large extended Royal family and large Buddhist clergy, who were non-productive, and had to be supplied by the peasants. The Royal family actually invited the French in to stop Cambodia's much more powerful neighbours, Siam and Viet Nam, from annexing it's territory.
So unfortunate that such a beautiful country and her 7M souls had to go through untold suffering ! Couldn't this be the vile practice of associating with fools - like Buddha once advised in his "Maha Mangala Sutta"?

How was Khmer rouge?
Right now you are around 70 years old and you still have time to visit your memory.
Dulu sangat la maju.. sekarang tinggal kenangan 😢
lihat google maps bro, Phnom Penh sekarang jauh beda daripada 1960an dan 1970an
Itu satu tahun sebelum genosida
