Yesterday (November 26th 2023) , Steph (my daughter) I attended a concert at Symphony Hall in Birmingham featuring the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in concert with an ensemble called The Orchestral Qawwali Project. They play traditional Sufi Islamic devotional music adapted for an orchestra and featuring the absurdly talented Abi Sampa on vocals. I'd first seen them at WOMAD Festival this summer and was entranced. So what of yesterday's concert. Given that I've been attending concerts of all sorts for over 50 years now, these were my thoughts: What can I say. 20 hours on and I am still almost speechless, but I’ll have a go. It was, without doubt, one of the most extraordinary events that I have attended. The Hall is absolutely gorgeous - a fitting setting. Our seats were central and not too far from the stage. The hall was packed. When I saw them at Womad they were with a 25 piece string orchestra - this time they were with one of the UK’s top orchestras. The played for 45 minutes, had a 15 minute interval and then returned for another 45 minutes followed by two standing ovations and two encores. The combination of Rushil’s orchestration, the symphony orchestra, the Orchestral Qawwali musicians and singers and Abi Sampa’s soaring vocals was intoxicating. During the interval we met an old friend from Malmesbury. His comment was, “You must have been in the Blue Tent at Womad.” (That's where I first saw them live.) But I’m biased, hopelessly so. I think they are one of the most remarkable musical acts I have seen. But what would Steph think? She admitted to being a little sceptical about going but went along with an open mind. Her comment at the end: “It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen - thank you so much for sharing it with me.” Says it all. The event was filmed by multi cameras but it seems it may only have been commissioned by the CBSO and Symphony Hall. I hope so much that they make it available to all. After listening to this I just couldn’t stop my tears from flowing ….. how could something sound so beautiful that words fail to describe it.. this made me fall in love with my husband all over again to the depths I couldn’t have fathomed…. Thank you for making something so darn spectacular ❤

Maybe because in Pakistan we say Ghar and not Gar i at first couldn't appreciate her enormous talent...but now trying to forget my nuances and focusing on her beautiful voice....♥️
Bearing in mind she is not native in hindi or urdu at all she is pretty epic. To sing in a new language is a whole new challenge so I would let it slide if she doesn't pronounce all perfectly
Piya can also refer to God coming home into our hearts like many poets like Khalil Gibran and Rumi, etc, and our famous Mirabai refer to a beloved one as God
