  • Master artisan, block printmaker, Laura Wilder, gives a presentation entitled “Block
Printing,” at the January 24 meeting of the Irondequoit Art Club held at the Irondequoit Library 1290 Titus Ave., Rochester, NY 14617. A block print is a print made from a hand-carved
stamp. Laura describes how she got into block printing, shows some of her works and the steps involved in making a print. She provides a demo of carving a sample block followed by making a block print using a wooden spoon instead of a press.
After getting her degree in art and spending several years as a graphic designer and commercial illustrator, Laura discovered the designs and philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement. Inspired, she learned printmaking, and submitted her vintage-style block prints to the
Roycroft Renaissance Jury. The jury certified her as a Roycroft Renaissance Artisan, which enables her to use the “RR” mark on her work. She was soon elevated to Master Artisan.
The block prints are created by doing a separate hand-carving and printing for each color. Printing is done on an antique hand-cranked letterpress. Laura has won many awards, including many 1st Place, Best in Show, Awards of Distinction, not to mention many prestigious commissions. Her exhibitions have included Clothesline Art Festival, Corn Hill Arts Fest, Arts at the Gardens in Canandaigua, Letchworth Arts & Crafts Show, Christkindl Market, Central Pennsylvania
Festival of the Arts. Her art explores what her distant cousin, Laura Ingalls Wilder, called
the “sweet, simple things of life”, especially the beautiful effects of light in nature.

I enjoyed watching the process of multi-block relief prints. Compositionally the color scheme worked out beautifully. Nice work!
