      Exactly. Incense smells good and makes you feel good by creating a good smelling environment. Prayers don't need incense to be heard. But, it's not wrong to burn it if someone wants to feel good. Remember, the purpose is as important as the method.

    Smelled incense Thursday in my Griefshare group. No one else smelled it. It lasted one hour 5 minutes.
    Called a friend today who lives across the country. They said they smelled incense just before I called them and it lasted for our conversation. We checked all possible sources. I even smelled the lamp chords and outlets trying to figure out where it came from. Nothing showed up. Friend checked his truck. Everything thing. Was driving and he pulled over. When I told him my story after he was smelling it when I called( he did not know my story I called to tell him my experience and hadn't told him yet when he was experiencing it). He actually pulled over from driving he was so overwhelmed. I almost choked on it near the end of my experience.
    I grew up Catholic. He did not. We are both born again Christians. We are only friends in the Lord. Such an experience. Still processing w the Lord. God bless all

    I have a cousin who dabbled in Eastern Hindu religions, one of her jobs was making the stick incense. It is made out of cow dung, that is emulsified in water, extruded or has sticks dipped in it, then when it has dried (and is odorless) a scent or oil is added. Not something I'd want to use during prayer. The tree resins used by Orthodox and Catholic incense makers (like my own Jewish ancestors) is a better bet for me.

    Use a tea light burner and put a tiny bit of oil with a bit of incense resin. The same incense resin will last days, the same amount of incense would be gone real quick with charcoal.
    Sometimes the oil gets a burned smell depending on the oil or quality etc but you can just change the oil and the resin still is fragrant

    you are more Eastern Orthodox than you realize. just kidding, I'm eastern orthodox and in our church the priest before the liturgy venerates with incese the Alter, then the Icons then the People attending, so the priest comes down incensing people as well. our believe that the "Holy things (Body and blood of Christ) is for the Holy". bottom line is the smell of incense in the orthodox church is much much stronger, and very intense. the whole church is like inside a cloud in heaven. Incense has been part of liturgy since the old testament, and New testament liturgy. it simply used for the purpose of venerating God who is fully present and it puts you in the mood of being in heaven while all the prayers are like holy smoke glorifying and venerating Christ our God.

    One thing I have noted in my study of Church history is that, after tobacco was discovered, the smoke of tobacco has been considered by many to be a valid form of incense for Christians. This is good for me since I smoke a pipe and often will smoke a pipe during my praying of the hours or my time in Scripture.
    However, I prefer this form of incense. I have been using the cheap Walmart stuff so I will have to start buying the real stuff!

    • @1517FILMS
      @1517FILMS  7 лет назад +6

      Don't feel too bad about using the "Cheap," stuff. I used it for many years. Like I said in the video, there's no Law which requires a certain kind of incense be used. And, using incense during prayer is a freedom, not a Law. We always have to be on guard for our Old Adam inventing new Laws for himself to keep so he can boast of his own righteousness & good works.
      However, if you're interested in the highest quality incense (for the best price), then I highly suggest you go to LegacyIcons.com. If you're comfortable ordering from an Eastern Orthodox company, then this is the best you'll find anywhere. Ultimately, when it comes to incense, if you're looking for quality it's going to have to come from the East, or from Rome. Lutherans haven't cornered the market on it yet. Most have a heart attack when you suggest using incense in the Divine Service!

    The Athonite incenses are higher quality and burn better because the ingredients are first ground before being blended and kneaded like a dough. That gives that uniform burn. You should be able to find them at any Greek store. The livani can be found there as well or in any Catholic store. I've never seen stick incenses being burned by Christians though. It wouldn't be traditional.

      3 pm is a good time, it's the hour when Jesus said: It's finished (John 19:30). Also 3 pm is the hour when Peter heal the sick after the first Pentecost (Acts 3: 1-12). In Catholic Church, the 3 pm is now called Divine Mercy hour. In KJV Bible it's written as ninth hour, but it's equivalent to 3 pm. The ninth hour mean the ninth hour after sunrise.
      9 AM is also good time, because it's the time when the Holy Spirit came first-time in the world (Acts 2).
      Night after sunset around 7-8 pm is also good time, or just before sleep but before 0.00 is also good time to remember last supper. Midnight is also good if you want to do prayer like Jesus in Gethsemane.

    Go to an Eastern Orthodox church and buy some, along with the small charcoals and a small censer. Then before you do your morning prayers, light the charcoal, watch the gunpowder make the little sparks, put it in the censer and place a couple of pieces of incense on the charcoal, just like he does. Get everything at a church.

      So generally speaking, it's all about intent. All plants are sacred gifts from the Creator God. In one view, why would we not use them if it's for honor and prayer to the Lord? Plus, plants often used for incense have healing properties regardless of what culture is using them for.
      However, it's better to not use Palo Santo or White Sage (indigenous to the Americas) because they're becoming severely endangered through overharvesting via their popularity with New Age-ists. They're sacred plants to South American and North American indigenous cultures, respectively, with their own histories and ceremonies tied to them. Ceremonies that have been routinely appropriated and misused or disrespected, sometimes unintentionally by well-meaning people.
      Traditionally, the Palo Santo tree must have fallen and lain in the jungle floor for 4-6 years before it can be harvested for incense use. But now, due to its popularity, trees are being deliberately cut down en masse for profit distribution. If you must use Palo Santo, I would highly encourage doing some research on your sustainable sources. Sacred Wood Essence and Ecuadorian Hands are two companies I can vouch for.
      White Sage is in a similar boat. Honestly, just don't use White Sage. Because European Sage is perfectly and widely available, easy to grow, and is not endangered / under threat.
      Similarly, if you want to keep it traditional to Abrahamic faiths, go with frankincense or myrrh. But again, check the sustainable sources. Both comes entirely from Yemen and Somalia -- severely war torn countries with historically tons of human rights violations and exploitation of the poor. Similar to Palo Santo and White Sage, the current harvesting practices of frankincense and myrrh may lead to their extinction by the end of this century.
      Alternative sustainable incense options: Juniper, Lavender, Vervain, Mugwort, Pine, European Sage, Rosemary, Mint, Dill

    • @1517FILMS

      It truly depends. It burns relatively quickly on charcoal. However, I use a "smokeless," (although not truly smoke less) incense burner which gets the needed heat from a beeswax candle, and not charcoal. I have more control with that over the burn time & even the amount of smoke.

    Cradle Lutheran, I attended LCMS parochial schools/ college and minor seminary before becoming ELCA. Incense was used maybe twice a year at the feasts of Nativity and Resurrection decades ago. Now Lutheran parishes use incense more often though some people with respiratory problems don't like it if there is poor central air conditioning in a small church.
    Here's a Lutheran parish in Seattle that uses incense each week:

    I have a question, is it okay for a Christian to burn incense purely because they like the smell? I burn frankincense when I pray, but I will also sometimes light a stick (usually Nag Champa) around the house so I can relax, and make the house smell nice. Is this okay, or should incense be used only for Christ, and for prayer?

Pentecostalism has it's actual (historical) roots, not in the day of Pentecost, but in the false signs & wonders associated with the Azusa Street Revival in the early 1900's, where "miracles," accompanied preaching that corrupted the Gospel, & contradicted the whole history of Christianity for the preceding 19 centuries.

      You are mistaken if you believe Acts 1:4-8 to be for all people! No one in the well documented history of Christianity... prior to the aforementioned Azusa Street Revival... ever interpreted those passages to be prescriptive for the whole Church on earth. Those verses are descriptive, in that they describe something Jesus promised to His disciples regarding the coming of the day of Pentecost. And indeed, His promise to the disciples was fulfilled when they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues on the day of Pentecost. The one who twists scripture to be about himself is the one in need of repentance to be saved, not the one who rightly understands the scriptures according to the rules of context, language, grammar, and through the lens of documented Church history.

    • @1517FILMS
      @1517FILMS  6 лет назад +1

      The simple answer is that it's not the thing being done which offends the Lord , but the state of the heart doing the thing. All the things listed are things commanded by God in the Levitical Code (along with examples of their abuse). So, it's not the thing, but the lack of a humble heart which offends the Lord. Look back to verses 1 & 2: God is declaring the works He has done, and the greatness of His power & majesty. And, at the end of verse 2 God says: "But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word."
      From the notes on verse 3 in my Study Bible: "The use of prescribed offerings (ox, lamb, grain, memorial) as a magical device to immobilize the Lord is as abhorrent to Him as sacrificing human beings or unclean animals such as dogs and swine."
      We must remember that much of what is mentioned in verse 3 is actually commanded by God of the people of Israel. To use verses of God's displeasure with these things to suggest that they should "Never be done," is to make God contradict himself. It's the "broken and contrite heart," that God is looking for in these things.
      Humility, not incense, is the issue in verse 3. And I address this in my video when I state that burning incense is a freedom Christians have but can be abused when they begin to think they are more holy than people who don't burn incense.
      Thanks for the great question.
