I like how you encourage everyone to just do it. Cool.
Another fine piece of filming. I've seen the Big Boy at Steamtown. No-one can imagine the tremendous size of it, until they are in ones presence. Nice job.
Agree
When I was a kid, my Dad took me many times to the original Forney's Museum (which is now an REI shop). One thing that was nice back then, is that you could go into the cab of the Big Boy, and sit in the engineer's and/or fireman's seats. Never been to Forney's since they moved. It looks like the collection is quite a bit larger than back in the day.
That Big Boy will outwork 3-4 of your little diesels lol. Steam is still kinda superior but the railroads are cheap.
Looks like a nice model of the real place. Good job And cool you got to go there and check out that snow blower. Awesome piece
That is the tender involved in the 4005 derailment. The dents in the tender side prove it
I went off of the information on the internet.
Thanks DJ that was a great and interesting video it's great to see the old steam train's restored
Glad you enjoyed it
I am the education director for The Forney Museum. Thank you for this video! It's really great!
Glad you enjoyed it!
great looking structure DJ!
Thanks!
We have the 4018 here in Frisco Texas.
wish I could have been there and seen everyone
Do they still have a big boy in steam town?
Yes
Good job on the model! I belonged to an HO club which met in the basement of the old Forney Museum. We were chased out by REI.
Wow! Glad you found my video and if you have any insights, please share
Yes, the BigBoy is big. The one they restored came out of L.A. frie gounds yeas ago then i got to see it again when it came throught Victorville agsin and when my wife saw it she stopped complaining about my train habits 😂😂😂😂
Awesome story!!!!!
Hi DJ. Great video! That’s an awesome museum!!
Both the real one and the model museum are great!
Do you have a Big Boy locomotive you can roll in there?
Sold building years ago
Very cool bud love the old school
y son worked in a building right next to the Big Boy 4014 for 2 years and had dinner every day with the men who tended the engine.
Cool experience
That museum was a really cool place…not only the trains and layouts but some nice automobiles
I liked the planes and bikes too.
What a great museum. It always amazed me that the big boy can be fired efficiently being that big, what a superb loco ! Did I spot the side panels of a GWR coach and a B.R. Mark 1 coach on the wall of the building ?
I saw Big Boy 4014 in North Platte, Nebraska when it did the 2019 Midwest tour. It is an amazing sight to see rolling down the rails! 🙂
4005 is the only big boy to ever derail!
Wow! Never knew!
Thank you for the awesome content as always! I live in Rancho Cucamonga California, about 15 miles from the LA county fair where they used to keep 4014 on static display. I have some pictures as a kid in the cab. I miss it but I’m so happy she’s been brought back to life! I much rather it come to me than I go to it!
Funny. Just a couple days ago I was talking with friends about the old Forney Museum. It was fun to visit as a kid, but it was not a good museum back then. The old powerhouse was in disrepair, the cars were dusty, the lighting was very dim so you could hardly see anything. The stuff stored outside was falling apart from lack of upkeep (I think some of the stuff they had outside didn't survive the move, or was junked on the spot when they left the old building). They had several old Denver Tramway streetcars outside, on the opposite side of the building from where the Big Boy was kept, and you could only see them by exiting a door that lead to a balcony. IIRC the stairway down was either roped off or removed entirely. One of those streetcars was .04 which has recently received a very good cosmetic restoration. Another one was moved to the new museum and given a new paint job. I don't know what happened to the rest of them, I hope they're somewhere safe today. I remember they had a large wooden ship replica on display outside, maybe 1/4 scale. I think it was a replica of the Santa Maria or the Mayflower. It never reappeared at the new museum, I remember it being in very poor condition when I saw it, I think it was claimed to have been built for a World's Fair (Maybe the 1893 Columbian Exposition). No idea where it is now, or if it survived. Would love to know more about the old museum, hard to find pics now.
It looks like it's in good shape. We went to see 4018 last weekend in Frisco, TX and it needs a lot of restoration.
My wife bought me a cab ride in a steam locomotive at Steamtown for my birthday about 10 years ago. Your comments about how hot it was brought back memories of that ride - and it wasn't even in summer! It's funny how certain things stick with you. I remember the smell of the hot steam reminding me of an even earlier memory when the radiator boiled over in my parents' old car when I was a kid! Railroading has always been hard work, but I can't imagine that being your work space everyday.
When the Big Boy was at the LA County Fairgrounds I got to go in the cab it was open and they let you sound the horn and pull the bell.
Great scratch build!
I think your fashion designer has a thing for you, man!
We’ve been hanging out a lot lately
@@djstrains Cool!
hello dj its is randy and i like yours video is cool thanks friends randy
Now I'm retired.on the look out for new ideas. It's nice to visit the model world.🤔 Let's see what tomorrow brings.
You can do it!
SUCH GOOD STUFF YOU PRESENT TO US!
It’s so great to get the what’s it like in the Real World!
Will you be going to the N Scale Weekend at the Blair County Convention Center, September 14 & 15, 2024?
I hope to meet you if you’re there.
I’m 69 and have had a 30 year hiatus from HO & N Scale. I made a decision around Christmas 2023 to go back into the hobby.
I have devoted a 12’ by 20’ section of my basement to the layout. We built out house in 1994 and I started some benchwork at 42” high and painted 3 walls with Sky Blue Colors and used a Rattle Can to make some rather nice looking clouds in my opinion.
But, life got in the way and that’s as far as I got.
I’ve decided to use the KATO UNITRACK. I’ve been gathering straight & curved pieces when I see what I believe are reasonably priced. I’m holding off on turnouts since they are more expensive and the number I will need is unknown.
I’m leaning towards the western desert area, since time for me doesn’t give me the opportunity to make a lot of trees. Roy Smith has been an inspiration to me. RUclips recommended I take a look at his Channel and I’m glad I did. I then found your Channel and again, so glad I did!
(I have Pancreatic Cancer and I’m in my 6th year of Chemo. I’m doing well, better than most, so I’m going to try to do what I can with my layout.)
Very Sorry you decided to leave RUclips, but with the Haters Out There, and the way RUclips has changed the monetizing (heard from other channels) I can understand why.
I am keeping the nearly 400 videos up, and am extremely grateful for your support and wish you well and great health
I have that big boy 4005 in ho scale
What radius curves are necessary?
@@djstrains I don't know
I’d do 22” radius minimum
Hey DJ, back in 1997 I got a VHS tape from an advertizer of Trains Magazine. It was a training film produced by the Union Pacific Railroad. Showcased were features of the Big Boys. Two that stood out were the stoker (I don't know if it was compressed air or steam operated). The pulverized coal was pushed up into the firebox and a traversing jet of steam or air sprayed the coal evenly over the firebox grate. I don't think TWO firemen could keep it stoked manually! The other was the moveable smoke deflector. I guess it deflected the smoke to one side if the locomotive was heading directly into the wind. Great video. I enjoyed it immensely! Guy (Grandson of a UP gandydancer).
Very cool
I got to see 4014 and 4006 in 2019. It was so awesome getting to see them and I even got to sit in the cab of 4006. I'd love to eventually see and take pictures of every surviving Big Boy. As well as ride behind or, if I'm lucky enough, in the cab of 4014
That would a great experience!
Cool ring 💯
I love it
How far is the George Town Loop from Denver, CO. ? Are there any buses to take you there? I'm planning a trip to that place.
40 miles from airport
The museum seems fascinating,so much to see.The scratchbuild you did looks very good, Thanks for sharing all this with us!
Glad you enjoyed it
I rooted around in the Forney Museum building before REI spruced it up…that was fun!
Lol, nice
Great video and scratch built structures. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks 👍
DJ are you coming to see the Big Boy in Omaha?
Nope, done traveling for now. So much footage left to share!
@@djstrains Looking forward to it! One day I would like to meet up with ya!

@djstrains I haven't been to that one just the b&o and Missouri transportation museum.
Fun video. Have you ever seen the youtube channel....Pro Scale Models... He is a master scratch builder and also graffiti artist.
I honestly don’t have much free time
Thanks for taking us along, DJ. Great job on the scratchbuild.
Thanks for watching
What brick sheet, and where did you get it?
Available in most hobby shops or online from Plastruct
@@djstrains Found it, and in N scale too, thx. Seems similar to the old Holgate and Reynolds stuff: vinyl embossed, although not as big a sheet as was the H&R. H&R was only the one scale too. I have a few old HO buildings that need to be converted down, so this should be just great. Thanks again.
Followup: I just got four N-scale sheets (Plastruct 91608) and I'm disappointed, in that this pattern is NOT the standard brick pattern as you used above. I'll keep it, but I suspect I'll use it for background buildings only, as it does have a clear vertical stripe too, as opposed to the normal pattern. I do know you said you used Plastruct 91108 for pretty much everything. Is it that one eight bricks per inch? 0.125"?
