He is an ok signing. We needed another good creative midfielder after losing Vieira and ESR. Our midfield is weaker than in the last 2 years. Only Partey and Odegaard have proper vision to make forward passes and keep the ball. For the first 11 I am not convinced he was required but I hope to be proven wrong.
Merino is a like for like replacement for Xhaka. The only way he fits in the midfield is if he plays that role alongside Partey and Odegaard(or another creative midfielder) Rice has yet to get Partey’s level in my opinion! UNLESS Rice wasn’t brought in to fill that role but Arteta will groom him more - let’s see 💡
@@djp337 he is not like for like, he is technically a downgrade. Xhaka has a powerful long distance show and has a better range of passing. He also could link up well with Martinelli. Again I think he should be a squad signing not a first XI guy.
