The European truck manufacturers always used the dreaded ‘series-parallel switch’ which fed 24 Volt to starter and 12 Volt to the rest of the electrical system on the diesel powered trucks till they switched to the entire 24 Volt electrical system in the late 1060s.
The gasoline engine powered trucks used the 12 Volt electrical system till they were fazed out of production and replaced with diesel trucks by the early 1970s.
The complete 24 Volt electrical system got standardized on all diesel trucks throughout the late 1960s. Most 24 V tractor-trailers were bought brand new together , but for those doing the intermodal drop&hook work still using old 12 V trailers they had the option to equip the new 24 V trucks with a second stepped down to 12 Volt trailer power cord till the mid 1970s, about a 10 year period as the old 12 Volt trailers fazed out and were replaced with the new 24 Volt trailers.
The European trucks and trailers are at least 50 years more advanced than the antiquated American trucks.

With a Capacitar for starting then you can use 12 volt deep cycle batteries.. Still need an APU..
My 63 Loraine Loader started on 24 volts but runs a 12 volt postative ground electrical system.
My 1986 Oshkosh M-911 Truck is all 24 volts as in my 1980 Dresser 530 Loader."
How about some Regenerative braking to power some electric motors on the front axle for faster take off with a lower HP main Diesel engine and for power in the snow or mud?
