    My potato plants are winding down. My friend, who has no garden experience, told me, "What happened to your potatoes! They were looking so good last week." 😅

    Just in time. Pulled up a couple nice sized Yukon Golds (Central Florida) and a couple marbles. So I will wait. June 1st is the start of hurricane season. Gotta grow to completion as much as possible

    Mine are getting close.
    Had a couple of Kennebecs that died prematurely. We pulled them and the seed tater had rotted but the taters we harvested were very healthy.

      It's normal for the seed potato to rot away. The new shoots that come out of it use its stored energy to grow before they can photosynthesize and make their own energy.

    Hey Travis: good advice! I was just thinking the same. We had a major downpour last night here in southern Ohio so I'll be pulling some tater plants today 💚

    So harvest when the plants dead or harvest when the plants green so they don't rot

      You can always plant them closer if you want smaller potatoes. Or harvest early.

    So….you have 100 lbs of russet potatoes harvested. Now what? How do you store them through the winter?
    My grandfather had a big basement. He built Potato bins (as I recall, wire net bottoms. I remember LOTS of potatoes there.
    Well, I don’t have a basement…

      We keep ours on a rack of hardware cloth under our pole barn. We cover them with a cheap plastic tablecloth to keep the sun from hitting them and they store into the fall for us.

      @@LazyDogFarm thank you for the quick reply!
      Maybe you have already, but a quick suggestion: I’d love to see you feature your storage setup in a video!
      I’ll check and see, I’m case you’ve already posted a video like that.

      I keep them on a rack of hardware cloth under our pole barn. They usually keep well into fall for us.

    I piggybacked you on my first try Elba’s from your supplier in a 20gal grow bag so I could know when to dig’em. Well seeing yours today mine fell over about two weeks ago and turned yellow in the last week some browning. I do have potatoes l guess I should go ahead and dig’em ahead of you even though I am around a week behind you. Your thoughts. (Zone 9a South Louisiana)

    I saw one person show a harvested green potato and he said throw those away. Why?

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  Год назад

      Green potatoes contain a chemical called "solanine" which can supposedly be toxic in high enough concentrations. I don't know how green they have to be to be toxic. I've eaten plenty that were just a little green on one side. Just cut off the green part and roll with it.

  • @lylebrimingham7369

    The rotten vine will run down the stem and the potatoes will rot when it rains on the vines again best dig them when they turn yellow before they ever fall over

    I was told that if you leave the dead plants too long that the sweet potato will be spongy.

    • @LazyDogFarm

      Yeah they can start to rot if you leave them in the ground too long, especially if you're getting a lot of rain.

    how late can you plant potatoes in Southern Indiana?I planted mine a couple months ago but found some in pantry with eyes...

    • @Tater321
      @Tater321 Год назад

      I farm chip potatoes in northern Indiana and I can tell you that we try to have our planting done by may at the latest. If you plant then now more than likely the seed will just rot in the ground before it can put vines or tubers on. Hope that helps
