Thanks. I have a "barn find" '96 4x4 400 sportsman that I'm bringing back to life. I will keep this info tucked away in case I run into a problem. Thanks again!
Yeah, that helps a lot. If nothing else it gives me confidence to dive into it knowing what I'm looking for and 90% sure that I won't have to buy any parts Plus it'll let me look at what's going on down there on both sides or whatever I want to do at the same time. Your video is direct to the point easy to understand AND also Dear SIR... you are the EFFIN' man... at least for the next few days until I do it
Shop manual says .002-.004 but to measure at several points to make sure you have tapped or pulled outer ring evenly. Nice video testing to see if magnet holds securely was very helpful to me. Thanks again.
What a great video. I hit both sides with 12v and only one side clicks. I’m not sure this will fix it, but it definitely gives me an idea of how it works, and what to try before replacing that magnet! Thank you very much!
maybe you can just explain why you rebuilt and what were the issues you were having with your 4 wheeler that pushed you to do it,the tools you used and well next time right,
My magnet works but not as strong as in this video. I also found silicone over the top of my magnet. I have the exact same ATV. I found someone had worked on the hub before and didn't put the cotter pin back in so the nut was backing off. Now I have a bad seal, hub clutch, and plate. The hub clutch was metal on metal on the back side where the plate is. Just make sure if you do this job to put a .50 cent cotter pin in it.
When your 4x4 wasn’t working, was the awd light not working as well? I tried the “ground fix” on the brown and white wires and still nothing. Just curious because my awd light doesn’t turn on
Tim Bebel as I remember it was turning on.in this video the only problem was a misaligned magnet and hub. There can be other problems as well. For example I have another video with a Polaris magnum I believe showing a problem in the switch that is in the gear selector being bad. And in that video the light doesn't turn on.
thanks man I'll have to try this out I've been trying to get mine to work for a while now to the point where I was going to send it into a shop because I didn't want to deal with it anymore
jared howes I've done a shit load to my wheeler including rebuilding the engine in my backyard but I'm just at the point where I want to be done with it, thanks though
You said your gauge reads point 1 2, If your gauge reads .12 then that is 120 thousandths of an inch, which is 120 times more than .001 or one thousandth
Thanks. I have a "barn find" '96 4x4 400 sportsman that I'm bringing back to life. I will keep this info tucked away in case I run into a problem. Thanks again!
Thanks...makes sense, polarization between the two fields...the old saying: "two is stronger than one"...you brought the two closer together...

That is for 1989-1994 models, 1995-current are .001”

Any idea how to permanently lock the hub?
Good job on the video, especially for not being a mechanic etc.
This really helped me out. Thank you for posting!
Dayne Tyner I'm glad it helped. I know I was really stumped for a long time before figuring this out.

Honestly, it's been long enough ago now that I don't remember.

Tim Bebel did you ever find out what was wrong? I’m having the same problem where the 4x4 light isn’t coming on
Thank you, worked for me...
I have the same bike and same/similar issue. When the front right tire stopped turning did the cv joint still turn?
I have the same problem my cv spins but not the wheel please help.
Right on more things to try what a pain in @$$
Any idea why one would stay locked in? I can't get mine to unlock.
Ever find that out? Mines the same way
Thanks very much, very helpful. Good job!
Tim Scott I'm glad it helped..
First one I watch one the problem and all I needed to now thanx
bigkrypto I'm glad it helped.
Big help, Thanks!!
Thanks...great info!
Thank you, great video
Thanks I will look at that, good video keep it up
The 4x4 light in my polaris does not light up whats going on ?
I would guess it's something electrical in the shifter maybe. It really could be several things.
solved my problem thanks for the video,
Gatorcatcher32 62 awesome... now get out and ride.
So the outer ring need to be inset by a .001?
Jesse Houchin yes. The outer ring should be .001 of an inch further out. So the inner ring would be recessed the same distance.
thanks man I'll have to try this out I've been trying to get mine to work for a while now to the point where I was going to send it into a shop because I didn't want to deal with it anymore
Kevin Baker well... did it work?
jared howes nope haha I'm gonna send it off to get a new magnet
Kevin Baker that sucks. I have seen some videos on here showing how to replace that if you felt so inclined...
jared howes I've done a shit load to my wheeler including rebuilding the engine in my backyard but I'm just at the point where I want to be done with it, thanks though
Kevin Baker haha I don't blame you one bit..
