As others already said, what the judge did was proper. And if he took the 5th, since he is not the defendant but a witness, the jury can use that to find reasonable doubt and acquit the defendant. She basically asked him, didn't you do the crime that my client is accused of? If he takes the Fifth, that's the end of the prosecution case against her.
