BMW Crank, No Start Troubleshooting - BMW N55 Engine Rebuild Project Part 10

  • After months of work rebuilding the engine and a few days of installing it; this BMW N55 engine would crank, but not start. This crank, no start issue took me way more time to figure out than I was expecting as I was trying absolutely everything I could think of. Knowing that the engine needs air, fuel, spark and compression to fire up, I investigate each area one at a time and after seeing that the engine had everything it needed but wouldn't start, I was about to give up. Of course, there was a lot of other items to finish on the car while I was looking for a solution, so I installed the front axles, filled the differential and transfer case with fluid and then finally it came to me! Watch the video to the end to see what was causing this engine not to start all this time.

I'm subscribed and will continue to remove my N55 from my 2011 535i. I left it last fall as winters are cold in Canada and no heated garage. Im at the part to remove the starter and transmission bolts. My son suggested keeping the transmission attached but we'll see how it goes. I, like you, love the challenge and it is so rewarding when after all efforts, you have a great running engine. So much learned so far. Thanks for your detailed work.

Wow I can’t believe you finally got everything working. I was actually thinking about your vehicle and how you’re making out today so I came in from outside just to check to see if there was an update with your vehicle. I must’ve missed this from a week or or so ago. Anyway, it’s so amazing that you got it running but also even more importantly for all of us is to make absolutely sureWe double and triple check things. I have done something like this as well, and it cost me over 40 hours on a project. Anyway I’m so happy you got it running. Have a good day😁

Now that I have the experience, I think I could do a much better and thorough job when rebuilding an engine. It was just so much to learn and a lot of it on the spot that it's easy to overlook. Not to mention, I tried to film as much as I could and that takes your mind away from the job at hand, but I'm glad I did it! Have a great day and hope to see you in more videos.

I just ha my N55 rebuilt by a shop in Florida. I put it in the car (2013 F30) and it cranks with no start. The shop said the valvetronic sensor needs to be programed. Is this true. I initially got codes for the timing off on both cams, no i have one DME code 213A21 (low voltage) and a couple of P codes P1338 and 1339 for the cam positions sensors out of phase. Do you know what I need to do to try to get this running? I'd appreciate any advice. Thank YOu!

Bro I get so impatient I feel like such a failure that I start to doubt myself though with a lil bit of patience and understanding I feel like how did I not see the bigger picture afterwards it was so simple...on any project working on these cars its just the process of finding the solution that gets to me rather then being taught and already knowing ... I do all my mechanical work so I learn as I go along and I've just begun feeling comfortable enough to work on my engine..

I have a 2011 BMW 535i with hydrolocked engine. I changed spark plugs, removed water from pistons with vacuum, changed oil (oil had water), removed water from manifold and charger hoses. I changed the engine starter because when I test bench it, it didn't work, so I thought that was the problem. The engine doesn't even crank at all. Do you have any recommendation? what are the chances that the engine can be salvaged. It has about 93,000 miles.

I have a 2011 BMW 535i, N55 engine. I removed the valve cover, and turned the engine manually to check the timing chain. I changed the spark plugs for new ones (properly gapped of course). I changed the VANOS solenoids for new ones too. re installed the valve cover, put in engine oil. and had the same problem. Engine cranks but no start. I'd have to check it out.

Hi, i need help with my car problem, the problem is my car crank but won't start, i checked injector signal, there's no signal, i checked ignition coil, there's also no signal, then i checked all fuse and relay, there's no fault. After that i checked all the wiring on engine, there's no problem with the wire harness, lastly i checked the ecm/ecu, i bring it to ecu repair shop they checked no faulty and i pay charge for checking usd60, after that, i try to start again, its still won't start, then i bring the ecm/ecu again to the bmw agent for checking with charge usd100, they also said there's no faulty with the ecu/ecm. I checked the fuel pump its working, i checked the pressure of fuelpump its working perfect. I checked the immobiliser, also no problem, Im still wondering with the problem and why my ignition coil and injector no power and no signal. Fault code on obd is P0341, P101b and P1061 , i tried clear, after a few minutes its appear again, anyone know what the problem? My car BMW 320i E90 2006, engine N46

Oh waow ! A lot of research to make it start but that's how we learn.
You've been lucky somehow. So if I understand, off-timed by 180° doesn't make any mechanical damages.
Upper engine was in exhaust while the lower engine in compression ? (so the Intake & explosion).
Too bad it doesn't show any code :/
Question, do you have to replace the vanos bolts ?

@@stephanelouvet1113, We found my issue which was the reluctor wheel had a chip in the magnet. Had to drop my trans, remove the clutch and replace the reluctor. Everything worked like a charm after that. The hardest thing we've ever diagnosed because everything pointed to the sensor. The sensor was in fact broken because it was what touched the reluctor wheel.
