Taylor is playing Clara Bow, a famous star from the 1920s, who died in an insane asylum because of the media attention and rumors. Bow was supposed to be released but her family forgot to pick her up. Taylor's look mimics Bow's appearance in several early films. The actors are from "The Dead Poets Society" - yes, including Ethan Hawke. Joe Alwyn broke up with Taylor before her show in Florida.

Post Malone without the tattoos reminds me of Travis Kelce. The way Taylor ran to him after the Super Bowl win and after her concert in Brazil seem to be re-enacted in this video. Also the way he bear hugs her from behind.

The run to/hug is almost a frame by frame recreation of a hug with Alwyn on Miss Americana, too.

1. “All my Mondays are stuck in an endless February” could be a reference to the movie Groundhog Day, released in February of 1993, where no matter what happens, the same day is always repeated. The only way he breaks this weird spell that drives him insane is finally when the girl he loves, falls in love with him too.
2. The repetitiveness of typing “I love you, it’s rui ning my life”, has one deliberate space because since Taylor and Joe broke up, now she has a “Blank Space” for Matty Healy.
3. The repetitive sentence could be a reference to the movie The Shining, where Jack Nicholson goes insane and types, on a typewriter, the same sentence on hundreds of pages for days, when he’s supposed to be writing his “Manuscript”, which is the title of the last song of the album (song 31, which is 13 backwards).
4. Also in The Shining, Jack dies in a huge hedge maze. In the song “Guilty as Sin”, Taylor writes the lyrics: “One slip and falling back into the hedge maze. Oh what a way to die.” So I think there’s some type of connection to The Shining between the typewriter, the insanity, the repetitive sentence, and dying in a hedge maze. Just too many coincidences.
5. The typewriter is missing the number 1. This could be a reference to her song from Folklore called “the 1”, since Joe is no longer “the 1” (and neither is Matty Healy which most of this album is about).
I could go on but I’ll stop. So much to say! I absolutely love this album!

@@Vwoclht7391egwn The black and white is a reference to the 1975’s music videos (Matty Healy, often referred to as Ratty, is the lead singer of the band) and to Clara Bow, who is inspiration for a lot of the additional context of the album. It’s also the color scheme for this album/era.

Love this song & video. Happily surprised by the great chemistry between her & Post Malone both musically and as actors. It took five watches, but I caught another interesting choice in the video. When their “magic smoke” joins and it flashes to them on the pieces of paper on the road not only are they in modern clothes, they are wearing exactly the same outfit right down to the very stylish shoes which are the only bit of colour. Also Post’s tattoo free (and quite handsome) face is now a reflection of Taylor’s face, the way her face reflected his at the beginning signalling a shift in the balance of power/emotion in the relationship.
In many years I was hoping for a Post Malone and Taylor Swift collab. It finally happened. I saw the future!🤍🖤🩶

There are more Easter eggs in this video than I ever thought the night it was released. The black dog waking across the room goes with a song on this Album called Black Dog. Those pages flying around were out of a book (song) Story of Us. It was the actors from the Dead Poets Society. On top of phone booth Post is singing “come to Florida but the car you want, which hooks to her song Florida with Florence & Machine- because that’s where you can start over, find a new name etc. the list goes on.

(I thought it was the same dress, too, so I went hunting. And it wasn’t just the two of us; so many people were wondering that several pop magazines wrote articles on how it’s not the same dress but it’s damn close.)

It’s their fourth video together, too - he apparently loves working with Taylor and thinks she’s a genius (which, of course). Interestingly, their work on Cardigan set the standard for filming safety during the height of the C19 pandemic; he’s an important person in his union, and he took the safety protocols they developed back to the union and said “hey, this works.”

I notice that, the first scene where she had his tattoos is like a way of saying that he rubbed off on her. These guys are clueless there were so many metaphors and symbolism.
There’s links to Clara Bow & the Dead Poets Society as others have said. But there’s also links to Mary Shelley (poet & author who wrote Frankenstein) and Percy Shelley (poet). Fascinating literary links, and very clever.
A lot of that is probably because this is nodding to the movie Poor Things, which one of her besties, Emma Stone, was in.
This song is about her 2 week (a fortnight) with Matt Healy.
The typewriter is a nod to Healy because he uses an old school typewriter when he writes his music
