Very interesting podcast. I've been to trees for several years and there's always been bands I'm hyped for, but i've discovered even more new bands that I now love, so that undercard is so important as well. I'll always get tickets before any announcements because I'm confident it's always going to be great.
Each year watching Glastonbury announce their headliners is always amazing. The first comment on IG or Facebook is always some variation of "this is shite". The amount of money, negotiation, effort etc. to put on that particular event and then they announce and someone on the internet instantly dismisses it, no matter what it is. Could announce Prince, Bowie and Queen headlining for 2024 and first comment would still be "this is shite". Loving this podcast btw.
I'd heard of all the love for the Mars volta behind ATG. I finally fell in love with them in a heavy way a few years ago and caught the reunion tour. Hope you get the booking one day and I would be dragging everyone with me to see them!
Loving these! So far have only been to one ATG...and not yet a Damnation. LOTS tempting at both last year...but out of budget, coming from Norway, after other gigs booked (two Autumn hops to London...65days and PL & MDB in Shepherds Bush). On the subject of headliners...ATG 2019, Meshuggah were the only headliner draw. Vague curiosity regarding Battles, purely from one music video...that was my only previous exposure. Came and saw a bit of them...after Colossal Squid...?...I think. Adam Betts on his own and then in TTT were a HUGE draw! Also CoL, The Ocean and 65days. Then I just wandered from this to that enjoying so many things. Several in the biggest tent, just staying there the first day...Arctic Giants, Zeal.& Ardour, Carpenter Brut. Mogwai closing the fest will be AWESOME this year!!! Saw them closing the 2nd stage on a hill beside the Oslo fjord as the sun was setting in 2011. That was very special, but they didn't play one of my favourite pieces of music ever, New Paths to Helicon...but then did several years later at a gig in Oslo I nearly went to, but didn't having just gone there to see Nick Cave. FUCK! Will they play it at ATG 2024? 😂
Thanks mate, and for the feedback. Hope you can make Damnation one year. How'd you get on with my accent, being from Norway? I struggled to order a cheeseburger at Roadburn one year. Ha. I'm back in Oslo for Inferno in a couple of weeks. Gav
@@2promoters1pod Ha! From UK. Grew up in Herts. Met a Norwegian in Cornwall. Been living with her in Norway since 2009. Maybe I have to concentrate a bit, but get on fine with your accent. Last year's Damnation appealed a lot! Talked with you a bit about it at Inferno, whilst you questioned my mate's festival choices...Manorfest and some other thing by the same people where a tonne of bands pulled out 😁. Same guy is joining me for Inferno this year. Whole thing this time. Just been asking what the deal is with Taake...and all the right wing accusations...and things they do that encourage such accusations...whilst denying such leanings. Anyhow, just couldn't manage last years Damnation, financially or the time. Blew travel budget with 65days and PL + MDB in London...and visiting my sister in Portugal last autumn. London gigs I can stay with family/friends...so getting to Manchester one day will up the cost even more...but REALLY hope I can one day. IF that Mariner 10 year anniversary fantasy you mentioned happened...without question I will be there!!! Gutted I only listened to its brilliance AFTER the Damnation set 😭
Would love a mariner set tbh cult of Luna and Julie Christmas album would be wonderful also that album held me together when. I lost my dad last year great work lads
I don’t think you guys need to worry about the length of these. I feel like 30-45 mins each week depending on the topic works really well. Really interesting again. Question for next episode - I know Sleep Token played Arc in 2018, but before they went mental big last year. Did either of you have talks with or think about Sleep Token as potential headliners for Arc, Damnation or Trees considering they headlined smaller feats like Radar and Takedown last year?
They were never going to be a great fit for Damnation, but it's definitely one for James to answer as they'd have gone down a treat as headliner at either ATG or Trees.
@@Virtute I think Download is the next festival they will headline in the UK. They have shifted a lot of tickets in a short space of time for their tour later this year (over 95k).
@@CylonModel2 Download or Reading, they have punched very high with selling out high capacity venues quickly. I'd still love to see them headline Trees, maybe Vessel has some affinity for the festival ☺️
Do average punters read festival lineups like newspapers, where the interest in the headline dictates if they're going to read further down the festival bill?
There's just so much focus on the headliner and maybe a (correct) feeling that that's where the chunk of your ticket money is going, so fans are really invested in it.
@@2promoters1pod I feel that, I just didn't know if there was a psychology aspect. Like if the top line doesn't hook someone immediately then they won't look further down the list, regardless of the ticket investment part. I don't know if there's a greater term for it but it's the whole "8/10 people only read the headline on a news article" effect
Im surprised the Mogwai topic hasn't been discussed yet considering all the damnation vs podcasts james featured he talked about trying to get Mogwai for years, now hes done it !
I need to compile a playlist of all the bands you mention! Unless you already have one available?! Love the podcast x
