"I'd rather not have kids and regret it than have kids and regret it". Well said. This sums up my exact viewpoint too. My mom told me at one point, only have kids if you *really* want them. That feeling never came, and no regrets.
Same here. A lot of people is like: "Och you don't know how it is. You will have kids and love them. Sure it's difficult sometimes but the love is overwhelming" etc. But I'm just not interested in that 😅 good it works for other people but I just don't want / need that. And I'm pretty sure I would not like my situation after some time and why should the kids be to blame and suffer because of my choices.
As a mother myself, and a single mum of 3 at that, I think you're absolutely spot on that the only reason anyone should have kids is because they're passionate about being a parent. Fear of missing out is definitely not the right reason, kids are SO all encompassing, So life changing...if you think a dog is a big commitment...lol! My kids are my life, they come before me, before anything else, and I actually think they deserve that. So - yours are words of wisdom, enjoy and contribute in other ways, in all the ways that you are passionate about. We're all here for different reasons I think. Great video, thanks for sharing :) :) :)
Good for you setting a boundary between your online and personal life 😊 as much as I'd love the relationship content I'm glad you've decided what's best for you
hi fern! random comment to tell you that i really appreciate the extra effort you take to include b-roll footage (ie. of the plants in your collection you’re talking about or you showing the exposure on the camera app). i know that’s probably extra time and effort and editing on your part and i want you to know it’s very much appreciated! ❤ hope you have an amazing day!
I just lost my almost 12 year old rescue schnoodle yesterday. I had him 11 years, so since I was 25. I am a complete mess and can agree that the costs, both financially and emotionally, are a lot. But I cannot imagine the last decade of my life without my best friend Charlie. I’m so glad I had him in my 20s because those were some tough years and I needed him. I highly recommend rescuing, just be willing to sacrifice for them. ♥️ Much love to anyone who feels the same pain I do right now.
Coming from someone who lost her 19 year old rescue chihuahua last year I can assure you that the urge to help another dog after she had gone was so strong. And i swear she hand picked our new rescue for us!
@@wildfern I like to think that i played a big role in her living so long as we rescued her when she was 10 years old in Maidstone Saskatchewan from a puppy mill situation! She got her final chance at the life that she truely deserved sadly she had to wait 10 years to get it. But i made her last 9 the best of her life! She even got to paddle board for the first time last spring.
Watched this q&a and first of all, congratulations on the house!!!! I called it last video you put out on your other channel, I told my husband I bet it's a house, she's moving again lol second of all!!!! After watching this I went back and watched your first q&a and the contrast was beautiful 😢❤ you've come so far. The progress in your life and your goals are so stark and it was honestly so refreshing to see. You would make fern of 3 years ago proud girl, jus sayin 😉
Ok! Why was this so good? Your content is so pleasant and watchable. I think and have thought for a WHILE (like since your apartment tour on your vlog channel) that you’re moving again. Bought a house. More room for plants and now it sounds like you’ll have a garden too! That’ll be fun to see if you incorporate it into your channel. PS. good for you for having boundaries and protecting your relationship/privacy.
Fern bought a HOUSE!! That's my guess. 🎉 Whatever it is, I'm so excited for you because you seem excited. I love your content. I really enjoy all the plant care you do. It inspires me to do the same.
I’ve repotted a few orchids before! They’re all thriving (even more than before I repotted them). I just used the miracle grow orchid bark mix and had no problems
Wow!!! I didn’t know you were a nurse also. I recently retired after working 45 years in the ER. I definitely can relate to how difficult it can be. I don’t know how I survived so long but now I am enjoying taking care of my plants. Loved this video. Learned so much about you. You are such a kind soul.
Loved this Q&A!! Just wanted to throw out another rescue pup perspective for you: in my experience, staggering my rescue fur-babies by at least 5-6 yr age gaps has actually been quite helpful for my emotional well-being during the unthinkable transition that we all end up going through at some point. I have been amazed at how much my heart grows to accommodate more love for a new addition without detracting from the love/affection I felt for my O.G. babes whatsoever. It can also be very rejuvenating for older pups to bond and play with a younger friend, & it seems to give them more vitality in their later years:) I guess I’m just suggesting that if Olive enjoys interacting with other pups, it could end up being helpful to the both of you to expand the family well before she’s ready to move on♥️
When I got into orchids I binged watched Missorchidgirl on RUclips, Danny’s entire channel can teach you care for almost any species of orchid you could hope to keep ❤ Also, I’m thinking you’re moving AGAIN 😂 but sounds really exciting and good news, maybe a home purchase? Can’t wait to hear!
Thank you for such a long and lovely vid!! And you go ahead and protect that new relationship ❤️ I remember watching you a couple years back when you were still nursing and in and out of another relationship. You don't need to share anything you aren't comfortable with.. we'll still watch ☺️
Your riddle!!! 😂❤ oh my gosh. If it is what I think it is, I just did it a year ago and am still getting used to things, but it’s wonderful. Biggest piece of (unsolicited) advice: your to-do list will feel never-ending (even more so than before), but try to just be present with it and take it one little piece at a time. 🏡👀 wishing you, olive, and your plants so much happiness in your next chapter!
Thank you forbyour honesty, Fern, its lovely to get to know you a little better! I live in the UK and I haven't had the pelasure of meeting a Fern yet, but I will keep my eyes peeled! 🌿
Love what you shared on mental health. I recently just got interested in plants and can already see that it has helped with my mental and deff agree that it has given me something to look forward to daily. So glad I found your channel and I just have to say you have the prettiest eyes! 🤩
Orchid...get it out of the moss and into chunky bark, lots of drainage. If you mount it it will do fine but you will need to water it at least every other day. You for sure can and should repot orchids..don't get water in the crown. Except when mounted biggest way to kill them is over watering.
This was a great video. Very much enjoyed listening to your responses to everyones questions. Ive watched every one of your videos at least once and have started eatching them all again. Youve helped me with my plants, nade me laugh, made me cry and been such a blessing to me. Thank you so very much for all that you do for us. Much love to you and lil Olive. ❤
I liked your riddle a lot❤. And I’m so, so happy for you. You deserve a nice, quiet, little place for you, Olive, and all your plants. And space for an outside garden! We just planted ours today. Houses are so much work but definitely worth it. I can’t wait for the big reveal!
You're very personable. Again, I really like your style of plant vids. You don't get overhyped about the plants you get. I can't deal with the "OMG OMG OMG" dramatic reactions. You also give good facts about plants you're working with that's helpful for us newbies. Thank you for sharing with us. ❤💚 I have a YT channel as well. You should repot your orchid. That moss will eventually get stale and orchid roots need to breathe which they can’t do too well stuffed in that small moss filled container.
Keep your personal life personal, girl. You do you! This is your job, The internet does not need to know all the aspects of your life. You have every right to not share. Much respect!

You can definitely repot the orchid! I suggest to do it when during spring since they will grow lots of roots then and adjust quickly. I have like 30 orchids and have been growing them for about 6 years!
Not only bright light but macro photography allows you to use a towel or something as the background. Using black and white backgrounds sometimes works
Hey Fern, I love your channel so much and this was a lovely way to get to know you a bit better. I see a lot of myself in you, the one woman show and wrestling the ups and downs that entails but the thing that really jumps out to me is your relationship with Olive!! I lost my fur baby a few yrs ago now and I too had her simce I was 21, she was my world. It broke me losing her and I’ve never wanted another dog because she had my heart. It took 3 yrs and the pandemic and I just knew I needed company again so I got my new loves, 2 kitties. Hold Olive tight and give her extra cuddles because I would give anything to have my Moo back. Lots of love and looking forward to your news in May :)
About orchids. I'm still experimenting but I think unless they come in a very good media they will die soon after they flower. I think we must repot most of them, but being very careful with the transition to the new medium. If they are in a very thin, wet medium - that will kill them - and we repot them in the adequate airy medium they will also die. So I am trying to mix a bit of coco peat and/or sphagnum moss to the chunky airy orchid bark to ease the transition. They are the first ones that survived so far...
Thank you for sharing! I could listen to you talk for 5 hours or more straight! You bring such a relaxing vibe that I so need after working in healthcare! Your my way of getting away from it all!
Hi Fern, I’ve been growing orchids for years (20+) and as far as I know you need to get your orchid out of that plastic nursery pot. You can put it back in new moss very lightly fluffed up and if you decide to mount it that would be excellent too. The nursery pots have the moss jammed in too tightly which can lead to root tot. It’s your choice in the end. Good luck.
That was a very nice video to listen to, thank you. As far as the orchids, go… I repot mine when I feel like it. I grow mine in moss and if the moss gets icky or full of algae, I just unpot it, add different moss and put it right back in the same pot. Mine don’t seem to need to be a up-potted very often, only when the roots are pretty much filling the pot. I don’t ever see any signs of stress from messing with the roots on mine though, so it’s not something that worries me. They just keep on blooming… Have a great day.
Love your videos, so calming and love your excitement for what you are talking about! Sweet Q&A lots of truth and I am sure that is hard to be so open! It's ok to keep things close to your heart 💖
Love getting to know you Fern! It’s fun to learn the ways people in an (online) community can be so similar and also different! Sending good vibes for the big things coming your way 💚
I have repotted orchids, but they have like a sponge holding the roots together, I always take this out. the 2 I have are doing pretty well , blooming again this spring 🌸
I loved the riddle 😂 I'm so so excited for you and I can't wait! Maybe you can decorate your own house for fall and Halloween this year already! Sending you much love and wish you good luck on your exciting journey ❤
I repot my orchids, after the blooms are done... mine thrive after I do this. I think it's good to do bc often the substrate is made more for the growers, than us at home...plus, it's a good idea to check on your roots. Try watching miss orchid girls videos if you want to learn about orchids 😉
You definitely want to repot orchids. Once a year is a good starting point. It’s good for all the reasons we repot other plants. It gives you a chance to check the roots, remove the rotted ones, refresh the substrate and give it more room to grow. Check out MissOrchidGirls vids…they’ve taught me so much and I’m becoming a huge orchid enthusiast because of her!
Orchids are not as hard to keep as their reputation implies. I have 5, one I've had since 2005 and she puts out 2 flower spikes at once. Transplant when you think it's necessary, just don't go too much bigger.
With the orchid, I only repot mine when it’s not in bloom or the blooms are already dying off. I’d also only repot into moss as in bark and soil mine just rotted but it’s yet to show issues in moss and it’s been like that for a few months to a year now
I love that you are a Gemini home body, me too. I feel pressure to live up to the social butterfly stereotypes. Thank you for being so transparent! I love your channel so much!
I loved this Q+A :) Your content is great! You seem so professional and organised, while also feeling like a bestie that I share tea and plants with, haha. Congratulations on ~what I think the riddle is~! 😉
orchids can feel so overwhelming until you grow them! definitely repot them if they are root-bound!! but they prefer to be more root-bound like hoya. start with the phal’s and then you can try some of the weirder ones. the only trick with orchids is just giving them ambient light (i think east windows are best) and don’t over water!! i love orchids so much, and hope you try some other varieties!!
Thank for answer my question Fern! That is sad 🥺 but anyways you can do it and keep it for you and your memories 😊😊 also I want to thank you because I'm learning alot seen your videos about plants and keeps learning my English! I'm born in New Jersey but when I was little like 1 year my mom go to PR so now I'm in US like 8 year and I'm learn alot of English now! ❤❤
I’ve repotted both of my orchids and for one I did it because some of the roots were rotting and it died back to like, one root, but now it is doing great and regrowing a flower spike/getting ready to bloom. The other one I’m glad I repotted because it had a plug deep down in there and there were for SURE fungus gnats living in the plug 🫠 so I got rid of that and she’s thriving now. I’m team re-pot!!
Oookay that riddle was so good 🙌 I am bad at them so had to check the comments LOL. I am so excited for you and your next adventures and can't wait to follow along! I love the Q&A, I feel like I relate to you so much. I love how honest you are! 💚
NO!!! Please repot when they are root bound or need fresh medium!!! Leaving the orchid in it’s old pot and media can create a lot of issues. Some orchids are more touchy to repotting but it is ,a lot of the time, necessary.
My regular Hoya compacta is directly under a grow light. Just a few inches away. Hadn’t bleached it out. I’m turning to each quarter and that side then really puts out growth. One side grew two inches; maybe more. You could try that with your variegated compacta
My dog is 14… we’re going through some things right now. Like you, there is a very strict medication schedule I need adhere to. I constantly say I never want another dog because I can’t ever imagining loving one the way I love him. Its a bind unlike anyone other. I completely sympathize with your feelings.
I relate to you so much on your journey with tattoos. I’m 30 now and collected lots of tattoos in my early 20s. I put a lot of myself into identifying as a tattooed person and always trying to figure out what to get next. It was Therapeutic and something I felt like I needed at the time. Now I rarely think about my tattoos. I don’t dislike them, but they’re mostly just background noise. Also, I’m no orchid expert, but I have repotted a mini orchid and it stayed very happy and bloomed for me afterwards. Repotting is doable!
You do repot Orchids! The moss they come in gets old as does the bark you pot them in. I repot every 1-2 years. You should try some Cattleyas and Oncidiums !
The few things I know about orchid is not repot when they are blooming. Not leave water on the leaves and in the space between leaves or they'll rot and wither away. Of course they would need repot sometimes, more because some roots die naturally overtime and would be medium for root rot or fungi desease, orchid like phalenopsis don't grow so much fast so maybe repot after 2 or 3 years
I will answer a little bit on the pitcher plant but water only when u feed them half full the put there food in if .u need to water ever other day .and MIne are growing crazy.
Orchid: yes definitely at least take it out and look at the roots. I've had several of those mini phals before that looked like they were thriving for months, then I unpot it and the roots are black! You need to check on them.
feel free to listen to this one podcast style 🌿 luv you all xx

I grow mine in moss and if the moss gets icky or full of algae, I just unpot it, add different moss and put it right back in the same pot. Mine don’t seem to need to be a up-potted very often, only when the roots are pretty much filling the pot. I don’t ever see any signs of stress from messing with the roots on mine though, so it’s not something that worries me. They just keep on blooming… Have a great day.
It's ok to report your orchids after the flower all gone. I've report mine and it bloom again.
You absolutely can repot orchids! Mine is mounted on a board and hung on the wall. It's so cool. The roots have grown around the board.
Sooo cool, I love when they're mounted!
The riddle was great 😁 I hope it’s something outdoors planty!
You're really one of my favorite internet people to hang out with 😊
Also, months later, knowing what the surprise is your riddle is so good!!
Awwww hahah thank you so much 🥺💓🌿
The riddle is lovely. I’m so excited! 🌱🌾👩🌾
Love this long chatty video. The riddle/clue about your big thing was awesome. I think I know what it might be and if I’m right - woohoo! 💚
Sending good vibes for the big things coming your way 💚
Nice repotting & chat! Thanks for sharing Fern.
I have repotted orchids, but they have like a sponge holding the roots together, I always take this out. the 2 I have are doing pretty well , blooming again this spring 🌸
Everything you said about Olive and your thoughts on ever getting another dog is 100% the same way I think/feel❤
I loved the riddle 😂 I'm so so excited for you and I can't wait! Maybe you can decorate your own house for fall and Halloween this year already! Sending you much love and wish you good luck on your exciting journey ❤
Love this repot answering questions combination…I just can’t stop watching. Thank you for your very personal answers!
Omg! Yes, this is about the house, right? I thought about it every single time I was watching your videos! I’m so excited for it!
listened to this one while doing some chores! so nice! i would definitely listen to a podcast of you talking about plants! 🪴
9:55 I’m planning on making a ping rock here soon still doing my research on ping varieties
“I’ve prepared a riddle for you” LMAO that was awesome 😂 💗
A HOUSE!!!!! FINALLY
Loved your Q and A, watched the whole thing, and your plants are absolutely gorgeous and the plant care tips have been very helpful.❤
Orchids are not as hard to keep as their reputation implies. I have 5, one I've had since 2005 and she puts out 2 flower spikes at once. Transplant when you think it's necessary, just don't go too much bigger.
Beautiful plant and the terra-cotta looks great with the marbling.
Ahaha omg your riddle was so cute! “we’ve done it before, let’s do it once more” 😆 I’m so excited for you!!!
😆😆 thank you!!
I hated my small compacta variegata but when i ordered a big 8 inch basket, i love it.
Totally feel exactly the same way about having kids! Thanks for sharing ❤
Yes you can re pot orchids but they do like to be in a smaller pot.
Fern, this was great! You should definitely do more of these! It was a great listen 🪴♥️
When the right person comes along your mommy instinct might kick in.
Fffffern that poem was on point!! That was really really good loved it
Hahah thank you :)
My dog is 14… we’re going through some things right now. Like you, there is a very strict medication schedule I need adhere to. I constantly say I never want another dog because I can’t ever imagining loving one the way I love him. Its a bind unlike anyone other. I completely sympathize with your feelings.
I am so obsessed with pinguicula🫠
they're the cutest. especially when they bloom 🥺
Love the riddle, I think I know... I hope it all goes as smoothly as possible for you!
Agreed on keeping that part of your life to yourself ❤
Loved this! And even though I’ve already watched your Patreon announcement video, I loved your riddle! So creative!
Sure u can report your Orchids...after reporting then check on their root grow. check and report after 2 to 3 years time...
Yes, that's exactly how I feel about tattoos! and thanks for your orchid experience, I appreciate it :)
A cool job would be to create/come up with nail polish names :P. This was fun! Thanks for doing this.
The riddle was absolutely bomb👌🏻👌🏻
