Native use many things that are considered toxic. In this instance Easter Red Cedar was mainly used as a diuretic to treat urinary tract infections. When taken in small doses it isn't fatal immediately.
if the trees are growing in the great plains just let evolution take place! are we supposed to keep all animals and plants in the same area? as when we found tem in the 1500's? maybe these red cedars provivded the praire with easily combustible fuel to renew the prairies

Good question. They represent different variations. Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana (green)
and Juniperus. virginiana var. silicicola (red)

Juniper is also a dye plant.
if you want to keep the prairie a prairie breed more bison and take all the farmland away so the bison can migrate and eat all the vegetation
