    I was asked to cut seven inches out of the middle of this table and then bolt it back together. I checked it out and thought that I could hopefully do better than that.
    But when it showed up I was also quite shocked at the condition of the top. My client just wanted me to do the surgery and she thought she'd then refinish the top, but I could not let it leave without also refinishing the top.
    There was a lot of damage and water stains, and I was surprised at how well it turned out.

    Dang... Nice job! When you started I doubted how that was going to look. Not a rip on your skills, just that it seemed like a difficult task. You did fantastic work and it looks great! Very impressive. 👍🏼

    Nicely done! But where are the bowties?
    They send firewood from the US to England to burn in a giant wood burning electric power plant (to be more "green"), so sending red oak to Taiwan to make furniture from isn't a stretch.

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  Год назад +1

      Once I realized it was veneer then I thought that is quite light, so it certainly is possible that they sent red oak veneer to Taiwan to build furniture. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
      And you're right. I missed a chance to put a translucent epoxy river in the middle along with some claro walnut bowties. Oh yeah, and LED lighting underneath. Shoot.

      @@Wordsnwood Yeah-and don't forget the fact you should have removed all the trim and replaced it with walnut a'la Drew Fisher! Another nice vid. Art. Thanks for sharing.

    I acquired a double pedestal table from the roadside-free sign on it. Came with 2 leaves. I took it apart to refinish it. The manufacturer's name was inside--Shin-Lee- from Taiwan. Looked them up-one of there claim to fames was that they used solid American red oak in their tables. Was nicely made. and in fact was solid oak. Had a metal rack and pinion gear for the extension.Looks just like yours only full size.

      interesting bit of history... thanks! Shipping (containers by sea) historically has been kind of ridiculously cheap, so I should not be surprised.

    Looks great! I noticed when you were drilling stuff in the bench vise it was slipping around a little though. Have you considered keeping a piece of leather handy and clamping it in with your workpiece? I found that really helps hold stuff in place.

    I think the table top would have looked nicer with a thin strip of darker wood marking the cut, so it looked like the division was meant to be there.. plus that way it could double as an occasional precision-ping pong table :)

    Good Video! A quick thought. Do you think if you used something like wood putty, could you make the cut disappear? It's not bad the way you did it. Just a backseat thought about the possibilies. Be safe.

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  Год назад

      Nope, because with seven inches out, the change in grain is also very obvious. Nice thought, though.

    Oxalic acid on those water stains will lighten them considerably. But the stain did a good job of hiding them anyway. Really good work on rejoining that top.
    I have a DowelMax as well; it is an awesome tool.
