It's really good to hear that I'm doing everything as prescribed - a few weeks off the bike, some easy rides and gym sessions too. I hope it pays dividends in 2022
Best advise for someone endeavoring to train through the winter ( a cold or wet winter, not Mallorca) is to clean and hang that white carbon beauty till April - find, build, ride a winter bike. Steel, fenders, touring tires, expendable bits and pieces. Many years of riding outside year round in western Massachusetts, experience counts.
Hands down the best RUclips video I’ve seen in a long time. Now in my second season of cycling (not racing) and your advice has given me a solid foundation for the “off” season. Please post more of these when you can. Biggest takeaway, forget the numbers and remember why you ride. Thanks for posting 🤗
I live in Maine in the US. We get lots of snow and the roads are not safe during the winter. I recently discovered an alternative that works great for me. I do snowshoe trail running. It is hard, but basically gives satisfaction similar to mountain biking. It keeps me fit for as soon as I can use the trails for biking.
Cross country skiing is great exercise for both lower and upper body! If you don’t have snow ❄️ where you live you can buy roller skis to use on tarmac.
Raced against Dan quite a lot of times or at least in the same race over the years😊 usually in the Regional CX Champs as I have always raced Western League and he’s Wessex league he’s an exceptional rider he can walk the walk and talk the talk👌
Excellent video David just what I needed as I've been having a love/hate relationship with the bike after recently crashing heavily, really give me the push I wanted.
Recently adopted rowing as an alternative way to keep moving and fit in winter alongside the turbo. Along with some simple kettlebell sets It’s proving to be a good way to stay motivated and keep a good base.
Great advice and very interesting . Been on the start line with both of you guys . I have tryed the plans . Though I was in great shape , weight wise a fitness first cross race no change and further back in the pack than last season . Ok I’m 50 next year but always got give my best. Would so like to work with someone and do it properly for results !! Great vid guys 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I’m no pro but achieved my mileage for the year and been off the bike for a week. Gonna do gym work including Circuits, cardio and spinfit ready for next year. Wanna be in a good place 🤞
Tbh the Festive 500 is my end year goal. I do plenty of long rides during the year for weight management, but I see the festive 500 as a culmination of the riding I’ve done that year…… though my area is 60deg during the Festive 500 so I don’t fall victim to cold as easily.
Hey David, great video, motivational yet educational. Couldn't help noticing the turntable in the background, what Wi-Fi are you running and what kind of music do you like? Off topic I know but would be really interesting........
So true, last Boxing day it was super windy and the roads looked dodgy so I went for a 5km run instead of my planned cycle. Anyway it felt easy and the pace was good, however the next day I was on my hands and knees going up the stairs and descending on my arse like a toddler. I wasn't able to walk properly for a full week but I was able to cycle without a problem :)
For someone who has a naturally high ft p losing twenty or thirty watts over the winter might not be a big deal. For someone who has a limited watts per kilogram that keeps them from succeeding or maybe even competing at all , the time training over the winter may be critical . Cycling is very individual
Since when are social rides "Zone 2"? Every newbie with their deep dish carbon rimmed aero bike joins these "social" rides to see what they can do with their new toys. The only way to do Zone 2 is to be alone.
hey don't ride your... bike:) It's like the kitchen background It's all level out because you start high and you end low. The rest is the smart trainer, make it so.... hey, WAT. charlesm

Hope these tips are helpful? And let us know if you’ve got any questions for Dan for episode 2 of winter fitness?
well!!!1 what about E- Bike (EMTB) rides in winter. Just to keep thing interesting, do something different and not having the need to go to fast,
Dan is a brilliant ambassador for our sport!

Great video. That guy Dan came over brilliantly - a mine of expert, practical advice delivered in a straightforward and unpretentious way. 👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Useful, I'm a none racing club rider but can still over obsess about getting the weekly bike hours in 👍
Ski all winter - so much more fun!

The Rapha Festive 500 is what we train for all year!

Great interview and advices. Thank you. I have decided to start with some gym work this off season. Mainly core and squats. We will see how it goes 😉
Excellent video, very insightful and true of other aspects of life/ fitness

Some good sensible advice/tips there. When it comes to indoor riding, I would rather read an instruction manual on watching paint dry!

That was excellent
Get a gravel bike - to have fun in winter is perfect 👍
Interesting!

I personally lose interest if I'm not doing structured training. Training is what I enjoy doing....even more so than racing. So I train year around.

Not gonna lie, I already had a small ice flip last week
