We went to see it last summer, as it paid a visit to our local steam railway. Simply wonderful, something I’ll never forget, it just fills you with pride!
Back in my youth in the 70s, I was in Torbay at a caravan site between Torquay and Paignton and one morning the flying Scotsman stopped right by the site, an American Tourist had asked for it to stop so he could film it , the whole caravan park turned out and I was able to get some great photos of it shunting backwards and forwards with a full head of steam, I was a great thrill and a great memory too and I always keep an eye out to see where it is going. Thankyou for the great video Robert.👍👍👍
Superb on many levels ie the beautiful weather, quality of the photography (video), and positioning, Class 67 QM sounds lovely too. I have all RM carriages and QM so lovely to see the real thing. Thanks for posting
…..and as far as I can remember, there was also a ‘lamp code’, for the loco smokebox door etc for a Royal Train, though the web doesn’t seem to back me up here. I thought it was one where all lamp positions were occupied. Could be wrong.
As per the video, 4 lamps for Royal Train carrying the Monarch, and 3 lamps above the buffer beam for Royal Train not carrying the Monarch, as seen on the latter half of the video when the Empty Stock returned to York.
Good video, but it might have been nice to let everyone know the date when this event took place. King Charles travelled on The North Yorkshire Moors Railway on 12th June 2023.
Like myself His Majesty is of sufficient years to have travelled extensively on steam trains so I imagine he felt a little nostalgic. Just as I do whenever I get to travel on one
What a beauty she is. Reminds me of my grandmother, Diddi we called her (grandma, you are in the internet now), who grew old in grace and even had most of her black hair still when she passed with 86. I also like to see, that a train like that can still draw a crowd.
Here in NSW, I used to hear 422-class locos (16-645E) hauling trains on a rising grade in the wee hours...they were hammering beautifully :P The newer GMs just don't have the same character. We do have a few second-hand ex-DSB MZIII locos, though (20-645), they sound nice. The older 42- and 421-class locos sounded even better - 16-567 :P

@@mictss6602 No it isn't.... But it is a requirement for running of the Royal Train. Was also required due to the length of the train at Pickering, and it's also a bit unseemly for the Royal Train to be hauled Tender first so needed for the reversal at Battersby. Additionally saves time with a run round at Battersby, and means the train isn't limited to 45mph when it returned empty to York.
@@dolvaran One of the brake vehicles has a generator in it to provide power to the Royal Train, don't believe any power is provided by the locomotives (except to move it, obviously).
Not that you want any train to fail ("break down"), but of all the trains on the network to fail you don't really want it to be the Royal Train... both for the sake of embarrassment and delaying the Monarch, etc, but also for security reasons as you don't really want it sat on the main line for however long waiting for a Thunderbird to come and rescue it.
The nearest station to Sandringham House is Kings Lynn which is 8 miles. For security reasons it's probably a lot less hassle using a helicopter (if that's the case). He might be driven their in a very low key fashion without drawing any public attention.
Not a surprise visit at all really for these visits are arranged many months in advance. Just because the traveling public aren't told about them doesn't make it a surprise visit. A King or Queen is never a surprise anywhere and why, because of security.

There's something very undignified in a diesel loco dragging a magnificent steam locomltive ass backwards at the rear of its train. 😮
Great video and fabulous drone shots - many thanks for this!!
My sentiments entirely.
In my youth, 1955-1965, during my loco-spotting days, a white cab roof was unique to The Royal Train. Only ever saw it once here in East Anglia.
Isn't east Anglia Southend sort of area?
Beautifully filmed ❤
I like the way he shook hands with an un-picked audience. A prime minister would have come by helicopter and only spoken to a selected audience.
Great video !
Such a unique cadence you hear from the Scottsman at the end.

marvellous but why oh why have nameplates all gone with Black backgrounds they look so much better in RED
The A3 is in the BRITISH RAILWAY livery and therefore has a black background nameplate as it did in service
Beautiful video.
Elegant, immaculately maintained carriages 'fit for a King'.

Who is actually on board the Royal train, given its length? 🤔
Its a pity the blinds were closed, no one could see anything...big trains just 1 person...his grandchildren would have loved that journey too
"DB" on the locomotive... Deutsche Bahn. What's up with that?
The House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha is German after all.
Because DB is the company that owns it! They bought out EWS a good few years ago
For me, DB will always be "Deutsche Bundesbahn" :P showing my age :P
There's a big DB Schenker depot near me in Sydney, Australia. They get everywhere.

They blanco'd the cab roof but not the coal!
Why do the always have a diesel or electric train attached to these old trains. Are they frightened the will break down?
Need a substantial generator to provide power to the coaches. But yes, also in case of failure.
It's a legal requirement to have attached to a steam train if you want to run on a main line and not a heritage track

I wonder if the delay in naming the company to maintain the Flying Scotsman is anything to do with King Charles visit to NYMR
I doubt it, as this visit was some months ago..
Lost a head code lamp somewhere! And is that DB, for Deutsche Bahn, on the diesel?
Yes it is
Only 4 lamps when the Monarch is on board. Royal Trian without the Monarch is just the three.
The House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha is German after all.
Out of curiosity: is he just there for the public appearance or is he an actual train buff?
The King of the UK brought to you by Deutsche Bahn 😂 🇩🇪 - staying close to his Saxe-Coburg und Gotha and Glücksburg roots...
One wasn't amused with the huffing old washing machine on spin cycle at the front of the train and as for those gastly class 67's. 😂

North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Heritage railway Pickering to Whitby.

What do they say to the king? Howdy Sire? What’s the steam engine for? Heating the king’s teakettle, I suppose.
