Comfort games: No.1 As a Keyforge player I solo 2 decks from my collection with no overhead, 20 mins. No.2 Heat Pedal to the Metal, so simple and intuitive, and fun. No.3 Marvel Champions, grab decks & a villain and go, No. 4 Concordia, such a well designed game. No.5 Targi, elegant and crunchy at the same time, out of a small box.
HEAT is a fantastic shout, I love that game and it is 100% worthy of being a go to pick, it's pretty easy to table and it always delivers a great experience. Concordia is a wonderful pick, same with Targi. I can take or leave Marvel Champions but a lot of people I know absolutely love that game.
Spyfall is still one of my fave social deduction style games and it's beautifully simple. Matt will love your Camel Up pick, that's such a classic chaotic racing and betting game and I'm here for it. The rest I've never played (except Unmatched which I'm ambivalent about) so now I'm gonna need to check them out... Thanks for the comment!
Ooo nice idea. I have 10 games that I’ve played so much that i don’t need to reread the rulebook when teaching and yet still crunchy enough that it could be considered the main game of a game night yet still doesn’t go on for too long. These are my comfort games: 10. Stone Age 09. Architects of the West Kingdom 08. Raiders of the North Sea 07. Hansa Teutonica 06. Puerto Rico 05. Tapestry 04. Tzolkin: the Mayan Calendar 03. Castles of Burgundy 02. Concordia 01. Brass: Birmingham
Mate I envy your ability to consider some of these comfort games, I just don't have the mental capacity haha! INCREDIBLE list full of some of my favourite games of all time, just to highlight a few that will guaranteed be in my top 50 of all time, Architects, Raiders, Hansa, and Brass. The rest are also wonderful games, thanks for the comment :)
Roll and writes like the Ganz Schon's are a great pick, I like to think of them as coffee shop games, turn up with a friend, have a coffee and a cake, play a bit in the time it takes to drink your coffee :) Other than that, love the other picks you have here, Mars is a big epic, Carcassonne a classic, and 7 Wonder Duel is one of the best 2 player games you can buy
Re: El Dorado - Lautapelit has reissued the base game and expansions and more, all with Dutrait artwork. BUT their cards and tiles are just a bit smaller than Ravensberger's, so you won't be able to mix them.
It's really difficult to cause controversy doing a top 5 board game list, but as soon as food is mentioned the pitchforks come out. In defence of Wayne, even though it's really funny to see people struggle with spicy food; if you don't taste anything spicy at all, you have no way of knowing someone is going to act like you've just poisoned them. I respect Rob being able to list Root on his list. If you play the same games with the same people, this kind of thing might be possible. Whenever I play Root there are always things to teach, and lots of rules to be watchful of. Honorable mention: Isle of Cats 5: Scout 4: Dune Imperium 3: Roll Player 2: Oceans 1: The Crew: Mission Deep Sea
BAAAHAHAHA You're so right, mention something weird with food and it's arguments all round. This was a super fun list to make and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I envy Rob's ability to just bust out Root as a go to game, I freaking love it but it's a hard one to table for me as at least a couple of my regular group don't enjoy it. Love your list, Scout, Dune Imperium and the Crew are all amazing incredible games, as is Isle of Cats. I've not played Roll Player, which is one I've somehow always missed, nor have I tried Oceans, although now I'm going to have to try and seek them out.
Isle of Cats was soooo close to being on for me. It doesn't even sit in my top 20 games, and yet it's such a nice blend of simple systems. Drafting, dynamic objectives, polyomino puzzles, hand and resource management etc. etc. and plays great at all player counts.
Great stuff as ever guys. The comfort food and game combo of choice here is apple crumble and custard with The Quacks of Quedlinburg. Mixing all that crumble and custard in your bowl goes so well with mixing your Quacks ingredients in your cauldron. Joyous! Tell Rob he needs to try peanut butter and marmite on toast, it's a winning combo.
Beautiful combo. Call me an absolute heathen but there's something about dirt cheap out-of-a-packet crumble that I just love. Slather it in custard and let's play Quacks. Great shout on the peanut butter/Marmite combo - you've got great taste (gamewise AND foodwise)
Thank you Julien! There are some AMAZING games in here. I don't think there are any expansions for the second edition, there are expansions for the first edition and I hear they are good, but I haven't played them. I hope they get reprinted for the second edition but I'm not holding my breath.
there are 3 expansions out now for the new dutrait edition. 2 are just reprint of the old edition, one is a new addition made for the dutrait edition. i've only tried the new one called dangers & muisca and it's fantastic.
It's a phenomenal game, almost certainly in my top 10 now (we'll see when we get round to doing a top 100). El Grande is still good at 3, but I think it SINGS at 4 and 5 :)
@ I love worker/dice placement, engine building, deck/bag building! My five faves are: 1. Everdell 2. Champions of Midgard 3. Raiders of the North Sea 4. Terraforming Mars 5. Hadara
BIG FAN of those picks. Everdell is a banger, probably could have made one of our lists, I love Raiders, Terraforming Mars is a big beasty that people love, and Champs of Midgard is another solid pick. Never played Hadara, somehow missed the chance to play that one!
A buddy of mine LOVES Res Arcana so I can understand that pick for sure. Bad company I played once and enjoyed it, from what I remember it felt a bit like Space Base. Tiny Towns again, just the once and I enjoyed it. Just One is a GREAT pick, as is 7 Wonders Duel, totally on board with those!
I heard Lord of The Rings: Duel for Middle-earth is better than 7 Wonders Duel. I haven't played either, but being on a budget I think I will get the LOTR's edition, most likely at my FLGS on Black Friday.
I have both. I do not think it’s better. But I’ve played over 1,000 games of 7wd and only 6 of middle earth so take that for what it’s worth. Middle earth appears to have removed a lot of the depth in favor for a bit of streamlining
Listen to this guy, he's played a ton of both and is most definitely more informed than us. But on first impressions, I enjoyed ME more... maybe the streamlining, maybe the theme, maybe the additional bits like the area control map, but... I liked it and you can't go wrong in either case.
I would just like to point out that my go-to “sexiest game reviewer” is Wayne. And I couldn’t agree more with his choice of Raiders of the North Sea. 😉👌🏼
Nazo! Haven't heard from you in the comments for a while! Appreciate the sexy comment, I'm pretty sure you're alone in that one but it's fun to hear all the same 🤣
@@boardstupiduk Hey Wayne, it’s true that I’ve been quiet in the comments lately, but still following and watching your contents. And I really mean it when I say there’s something undeniably sexy about the way you look, talk and express yourself. But I shan’t say more, this is RUclips after all and not Tinder. 😉🔥👌🏼
Nice video 😊 Also nice meeting you in Essen (I have a badge now!) You should probably get a low energy version of your theme song for the background in videos. The current one you've turned the volume down so that it's not that noticable, but its just a very energetic tune (love it as intro song!). Would be great to have something less distracting in the background to fill the silence.
Thanks for the feedback, Matt sometimes picks different background music depending on the video we are making so it does occasionally change. We will think about it for sure. Enjoy the badge haha! We will hopefully do some t shirts next year to give away
@boardstupiduk No worries, I'm partly just curious what a low energy chilled version of your theme song would sound like tbh 😜 For the record, my top 5: 5. Heat: Pedal to the Metal 4. Doodle Dash 3. Love Letter 2. Kingdomino: Origins 1. Dixit
I'll maybe record an acoustic version! Absolutely love your top 5. Heat is one of my favourites of all time, as is Love Letter, KingDomino is an underrated gem and Dixit is a modern classic. Not played doodle dash, so I'll have to seek it out
@boardstupiduk Doodle Dash is an excellent little drawing party game for all ages. The points aren't really important, everyone just always has such a good time playing (gamers, non-gamers, kids) that it doesn't matter who wins.
I haven't played enough Carcassonne (+ The River + Traders & Builders) or Ticket to Ride: Europe to not enjoy these games over and over again. BGA offers a very comfortable way to play both of these while being separated geographically. Probably should finally look into Cascadia though. Also the new version of The Quest for El Dorado looks definitely way better than the one I had!
Oh George, if you haven't played Cascadia yet I really could not recommend it more, it's a wonderful game, and has some great expansion content as well now. Also, Ticket to Ride is STILL a great game and I'd play that pretty much any time.
I've been playing TtR: Europe this evening, very fun! Cascadia is in my top 5 all time favourites and would absolutely be in my picks for this list too
I thought you guys knew your stuff, all those board game reviews, those hours of playing…. What’s going on, no Chilli Con Carne? Matt redeemed you all ….ahhhhh Tiramisu!

Heat is brilliant, only now rivalled by Joyride. Different enough in gameplay and feeling to not clash though 😃
Boom - some great choices, and totally with you on the Marvel Champions thing!
I go-to light-weight games like Spyfall, Arboretum, Jokkmokk, Floriferous, Night Of The Ninja, Unmatched, Forest Shuffle, Phantom Ink, Camel Up.
Spyfall is still one of my fave social deduction style games and it's beautifully simple. Matt will love your Camel Up pick, that's such a classic chaotic racing and betting game and I'm here for it. Terraforming Mars, Carcassonne, 7W Duel and Dice-games like the Clever series, Qlixx etc.

Food wise, I'll try almost anything.
Best go-to game? Probably "Furnace," quick, fun, easy to learn. "Dixit" gets a run more often than not.
Furnace I find is a massively underrated game, I really, really enjoy that game but I don't play it enough and I should.
Re: El Dorado - Lautapelit has reissued the base game and expansions and more, all with Dutrait artwork. BUT their cards and tiles are just a bit smaller than Ravensberger's, so you won't be able to mix them.
Ahhh fair enough - yeah I only have the new version of El Dorado so I'm not sure what expansions I can get.
Starts: 4:58
Cheers

Big agree in Isle of Cats, surprisingly enjoyable every time. Yeah Simon you'll need to bring that along or arrange a game night please!
Great stuff as ever guys. The comfort food and game combo of choice here is apple crumble and custard with The Quacks of Quedlinburg. Love it mate! Can't bear a bit of crumble and custard, great food pairing with Quacks as well, nicely done

@robtrounce3543 no crumble snobbery here! Sounds like a slice of fried gold!
What a great list!! Do you know about the expansions of the second edition of Quest for El Dorado? Are they any good?

Well colour me surprised and thanks for the info! I'll be buying those if they are in print.
Goto #1: Castle of Burgundy
Goto coop: Project Elite
Castles is one that Matt absolutely loves - I'm ambivalent about it. Project Elite, though HELL YEAH, let's chuck dice and kill some aliens bro!
I love El Grande at 3, I think the best is at 4, at 5 its to much chaotic for me (It's still very fun), either way it's still my favorite game c:
It's a phenomenal game, almost certainly in my top 10 now (we'll see when we get round to doing a top 100). El Grande is still good at 3, but I think it SINGS at 4 and 5 :)

Whaaaat …! crisps and my occasional unsleeved cards…. Nooooo!
Haha! Blame Rob
Love scooping up a little houmous with those cards.
You da Devil Bobby
I wish I could play with you guys 🙂
That's super nice of you to say mate, appreciate it 🙏🏻 maybe at a convention some time 😊
Fantastic video, great idea to connect with food and get to know something about you guys. Cool games on the lists!
Thanks Max! Nothing like food opinions to really stir peoples anger haha
All I'm saying is that when my special recipe becomes the trending food of 2025, you know where you heard it first.
If that day ever comes Rob I'll be the first to make it and film myself crying while I eat it
A recipe so bad I wish I had a penut allergy 🤭
I enjoyed the list however
AMEN Mark.

Glad you're still enjoying the channel Nazo! Appreciate ya
I really enjoy beans on toast but I smash the beans and add some garlic in.
Smashing the beans is an interesting technique... garlic I'll whack in everything
SMASH THE BEANS? AND THEY SAY I'M A WRONG'UN????

❤

Matt must be italian :P
Am I so stereotypical? 😂
😂😂😂
I thought you guys knew your stuff, all those board game reviews, those hours of playing…. What’s going on, no Chilli Con Carne? Matt redeemed you all ….ahhhhh Tiramisu!
Hahahaha Jambalaya was the closest I came to Chilli con Carne (which frankly, I don't really rate), we'll agree on Tiramisu, an epic dessert choice.
ARF ARF!
Arf arf?!
ARF ARF! ❤
First game discussed at 5:13
The video has chapters, but thanks
Nice video but close to 40 minutes and no timestamps :/
Yeah sorry I'm a busy boy, I'll add them in when I get a moment
