I quit my job this year to focus on finding my voice and art style and I'm at the point where I've launched a shop that fully pays for my expenses + I'm saving money. Ive been open for 2 months but I spent 4 months just trying to draw every day and consume media that I like. I did a deep dive into my soul!! It is very hard to do when you work long hours for someone else, so if the opportunity arises, I really suggest taking time off work to just enjoy life and discover your tastes and reignite your passions! I loved the vid Gabby, your channel is so good!!

This!!! A deep dive into the soul is really what's needed. And the best thing is, at some point it might be needed again, and to me that's a beautiful thing, the fact that I will be able to reexplore myself
It took me a couple of months to realize that I had actually delayed finding what I genuinely enjoy drawing by looking at other artists. I also had to learn that liking someone's work doesn't necessarily mean that you want to replicate it yourself. That led to a lot of confusion for me lol. Great convo today!

such a great topic, and i love these chatty videos :) one book that helped me wrap my head around being a "unique" artist and feeling comfortable with my creativity was Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon, it's all about how there aren't really any entirely original ideas because we're all so influenced by each other, and the solutions that can involve sharing your point of view and letting yourself be inspired by others instead of just comparing yourself to them... it's a short read, very entertaining and accessible, highly recommend!
I always felt like I had to find a unique art style to be an artist. In reality, if you want to build a business out of art, it helps to have a specific style. However, sometimes that's just not the case for everyone and that's OKAY. Make what you want to make in the way that you want to make it. You'll be a lot happier that way, and you'll grow so much more from it. Learning different art styles is eye opening and takes a lot of work. People will grow to recognize that, given the chance.
Every great visual artist whose work you’ve seen has been influenced by the even greater artists who’ve preceded them. So no need to feel bad about collecting great work for inspiration, whether on Pinterest, magazines, books or the actual pieces themselves. The feelings and struggles are universal across the board. Keep at it. You will discover your unique expression through exploration.

I think that finding your style is more a matter of perspective. You have a hard time seeing the big picture because you're the one making everything one piece at a time, hyper focused on all the tiny details. But if you ask the people around you if you have an art style, I think most of them will say yes! I think the best way to see it for yourself is to just make art and take photos of it, and post them to your Instagram. Then once you've got 20, 50, 100 posts, you'll be able to scroll through and see them all together, and you might be surprised at how cohesive it feels!! Because your style will also be the colors you've chosen, the subject matter, even the way you take your photos. On my own feed I can even see how the season changes my style, just scrolling through everything changes tone and color, even though it's not a conscious choice at the time.
This is so helpful! Without being an artist I can say that this pressure of wanting to be unique is something I even feel in the normal life. So, thanks for sharing 😊💐
Gabi, I always enjoy hearing your perspective on different subjects and I felt particularly drawn to this common artist dilemma. I have been doing art since I was a kid and I don't ever remember comparing myself quite as much as I did when I started posting my artwork on social media. It's an incredible tool that has helped me to share my artwork with so many people and make friendships across the globe, but it has also caused me to have a lot of insecurities and horrible artistic habits. I also became quite obsessed with the notion of this style that I admired in other peoples art, but I realized that the goal to find a "style" isn't really the real goal. For me it became more about the experience I could gain by practicing different subjects, seeing different sights, learning from other experienced artists, and experimenting with new mediums and methods. These things eventually accumulated into what is now a style that feels like something I can be proud of. The act of simply being enthralled by the world around me and the drive to become more skilled was what helped me grow in the long run. I love hearing what has helped other people too, because we all have our own ways of finding that sweet spot.
OMG!! I have been watching a lot of art videos and DIY Christmas ornament vids and I spent the last week trying to make a bunch of little art pieces and ornaments and the comparison was really bringing me down!! I was like "WHY CAN'T I DO IT LIKE EVERYONE ON INSTAGRAM?" But then I made a little felt cat wearing a coat and pants which is VERY me, and I finally found my masterpiece! I just needed to stop comparing!
A few years ago I saw a video by Jeff Watts Atelier here on RUclips and he basically said something like
' Don't focus on being different, focus on being good, good is different enough',I am probably paraphrasing it,
but anyways it stuck with me ever since. I wish I could remember which video it was tho, he has a lot of long painting videos
I love this video Gabi ❤ I related to everything you said - so much truth there! I think social media is totally to blame for this fixation with art style. When I was a kid I drew whatever I wanted to and just had fun. That fun soon vanished as I suddenly felt lost amongst so, so many artists online. Like you, I tried all sorts of ways to make my art stand out and although I felt great when something I made got lots of attention, it wasn't sustainable because I didn't enjoy the process. It didn't feel authentic to me. I'm now at the point in my journey where I'm trying to get back to where I started and just find joy in what I'm making, but I'm so screwed up from social media influence that it's not very easy. Thanks so much for sharing, I think this is definitely a conversation worth having!
I love the fact that you’re thinking about this and starting a discussion about it! And I think your instincts are right: The obsession with having a unique style feels a little bit superficial.
We’ve all been there, because of that sense of competition that you mentioned at the end of the video. We feel like we need to stand out in order to be valued. But as you said, there’s a lot of real value in the practice of art-making as a way to ground ourselves in the present, process our emotions, and tap into the spiritual side of ourselves.

Thank you for sharing this! For the longest time I wanted to find my own style to stand out from the crowd and get recognized quicker. Not only did that not work but it burnt me out severely. So now I’m in a mind set that I’m just gonna draw whatever I want that entertains me and I believe my core values are and that I want to share with the world. I know at least one or two people will get something out of my work ❤️
for me, finding a style means that I am no longer beginner. I challenge myself to learn all kinds of techniques and stick with what makes most fun to me. I dont want to paint or draw a certain style because thats the only way I can. And being unique also means to me that I am capable of coming up with my own ideas and concepts. I feel like at the very beginning you have to practice a lot so you search your inspo elsewhere and paint or draw along tutorials etc. But once you are past that point and kind of mastering what you do, you dont need to rely on other people and their art work anymore.
I think the examples you gave of Devon and Sam were great! their uniqueness shows up in different ways. I was just talking to a friend whose art teacher sees art and illustration as two separate things. She sees illustration closer to mimicking the world around you and art emerges when there is a kind of distinct “vibe”. I’m not sure how I feel about this view but I think it’s relevant and very interesting!

I've definitely recognized this separation recently and I'm trying to figure out how I feel about it. Or which category my art falls into which just feels kinda limiting.. I'd love to see more videos on topics like these!

you're absolutely right, I spent a long while trying to actively find an art style and I'm finally now pretty content with just making anything in any style. The only time I question myself is when I'm on insta and see artists with a perfectly curated feed in the same synchronised style, it's not healthy though I think it takes a while to switch your mindset and become comfortable with what you create, hopefully we'll all be happy in time ❤❤
For someone like me who's best strength is straight realism, it was a struggle to accept that my art is still precious even if it has "no style". But at the same time, even in realism, I hated the fact that my realistic artwork looked like "my artwork". I had the opinion that my art obviously looked like my art and I really didn't like it. Now I have found so much passion in all types of different art branches and styles and have come to understand, that my style is simply the way I do my art. The way I place and draw my brush strokes and the way I go about the whole process.
I guess what I am trying to say is: Everyone has a style, simply because it's YOUR art, recognise that and from there, decide if you want to change your way of making art.

That's such great advice! I could never put into words what I was searching for when trying to find my art style but I found that once I felt happy and that it represented my true authentic self, I kinda stopped obsessing over it. 😅
Funny that you come up with this vid just now! I relate so much 🫠 I’ve been recently trying to step away from the thought of „making something“ and trying more of a „be something“ approach. Meaning being present in live, actively seeking out moments I know will charge my happiness meter and with that comes more inspiration to then make stuff.
Trial and failure…. Having fun with the process instead of obsessing over the final image. 🍀

I think another interesting point is the fact that because of the rise of the internet and every ones interconnectivity we've all become 'one tribe' and so instead of competing with a group of 100 lets say, you are now competing with billions of humans to be a completely distinct individual. Just a thought- not sure if I articulated it well thoooo

This was a great chat and you have great points- thank you 😊 I think one of the best things anyone can do is very simple- just do it. Try and keep trying. Something I’ve been doing lately is creating the same general subject every day (or as often as I can) in slightly different ways each time by trying out different mediums, incorporating multiple forms of media, different color combinations, different application methods. For instance, you could draw a different dog every day- today you might do so using pen and ink with crosshatching and stippling. It could be a very short/simplified version of your work, or you could complete a more intricate piece over the course of a couple days. But focus on completion and application, not perfection. And I wouldn’t go out and buy anything new (at least not right away)- start out with the media you already own and use / are familiar with. While you do this, be sure to tune out and try to forget other artists- only focus on the way you’re doing things. This has been a fun experiment for me so far- it has been showing me my signature, things I want to work on, subjects/media/applications I enjoy, and the direction I want to go.

People also shouldn’t confuse a lack of talent with a lack of tools. And tools isn’t just the actual materials, but time, energy, support. It’s a much steeper uphill when you are barefoot and alone versus having a full climbing team beside you. It can be done, you just need more patience and perseverance than someone who gets to be a full-time creative with financial, emotional, and social safety net.
The uniqueness idea is fascinating. I make ceramics (not well, lol) and I see the pottery community very split on this. People will comment and say "you copied so-and-so" and other people will respond that there's pretty much nothing unique in ceramics anymore. It's all been done, some of it thousands of years ago! I like that because it takes some of the pressure off me to be unique!
I reaaalllyyy needed to hear those… It makes me veeerrryyy stresfull to be unique and find my own style. I always felt pressure while thinking about it. pinterest boards dont work for me neither. But it was really good to hear someone who has been dealing with the same struggles. Great video! 🙏🏻💐

Thank you for talking about this! I have seen this in the crochet/knit community where I am more active. Yes there is such a thing as pretty unique designs (like Megan Lapp's/Crafty Intentions' amigurumi), but these art forms have been around for thousands of years and designers can be waaaay too eager to accuse others of stealing/copying.
There is a legitimate problem with sketchy, ad riddled websites sharing paid for patterns for free, BUT no Brenda you did not invent a striped, basic ass raglan sweater. And then these designers get so upset that they post about it publicly on their social media in a way that convinces their inexperienced/mindless followers to harass the supposed copycat. It's a whole mess, and I hate it. Sorry I have a lot to say on the topic 😂

i just want an art style in general. i struggle so hard just drawing for fun and i dont know why. i used to do realism portraits and i got in to this horrible mindset where everything needs to be perfect and its led to me barely creating art for 6 years. i want to draw cute silly doodles, i just need to start doing it and stop overthinking.
I might try challenging yourself to start with some realism and then seeing if you can break it down into simpler and simpler components each time. You can even use your old work as reference since this might be a little less daunting. Best of luck 💕
Do what you want to do and is your passion, don’t pay attention to what others think. People who like and buy your products are going to buy them. People in you tube that support all of you are interested in your work, no how you clean your studio or your home, what you cook or eat, your pets or your toys collection, or how you package your products, we what to see your artistic skills and talents because this is the way that you show yourself. 😊
Hey Touf (the nickname my brain has given you over the course of the last few months lol). I found this topic really interesting. It is strange how we feel such a need to be unique when we all already are - without even trying. Like, if I were to try and straight out IMITATE someone else’s work, it would still be unique because I would be the one who made it. It would not be a cool move unless it is just for the fun of it, but if I held the brush (or insert other craft item here) it was made by me, and in that, unique. Since each and every person is inheritently unique, then so is the art that they create.

I quite recently discovered your content so I have been watching back so many of your videos as I like them so much. So much that I started to consider you a friend :’) You know, a weird digital one-way friendship where I just consume whatever awesome stuff you provide with haha. But still, I wanted to cease the sudden urge I felt to leave a comment (which I neverrrrrr do) to just tell you how much I appreciate your content. Not for the things you do or talk about in these videos, but because you truly feel so fun and authentic in front of the camera, making me feel incredibly safe and content when watching. You know, like with a friend. Your personality shining through is so cute and funny. I'm already seen as been unique based on my appearance and personality so I think my art is seen as unique based on myself as an individual 😅. I do art to impress myself because I'm still shy about my art 😆.

Maybe this is just me but I don’t think artists need to have one style. I think artists should be diverse in skills and show that through their art.
I really don’t say this to be mean, but “internet art” is completely disconnected from real life art industry discourse.
Like on social media even if you do art what you are primarily doing is entertainment. Never forget that. I get that not every artist can attend art school but I would just suggest to find an artist community irl, go to art shows at galleries, museum exhibits, and try to consume art offline as much as you can
I think it’s the only way to really grow
