Your live tone is without peer. Great chops, and a good feel for how an amp will sound on stage. So, if you say "go spring reverb", a player would be wise to repair that old tank in that old amp, rather than supplement with digital ice. Done deal. End of story. Thank you Richard!
Happy to be first to like and comment here! I have a Fender Performer 650 1x12 combo that I bought in a pawn shop many, many years ago. I got $25 price break because the reverb didn't work. This was back before the days like now when you can find out anything about anything on the 'Net, so I didn't even try to fix the smoking thing; I just used the $25 to help buy an outboard, digital reverb unit to use through the amp's effects loop. (Effects loops are great!) Problem bypassed, plus the digital unit had way more tricks than the reverb tank would have, so that wasn't too bad. I never gigged this rig out, though. More's the pity, too, because this is easily the most professional amp I've ever owned. I think it's even an anniversary model with 5 extra watts of power. Second best clean tone I've ever gotten, and simple -- plus I own this one; the best tone came from an exotic mix of gear I didn't own. Anyway, that fact that I knew (up front) that the reverb didn't work in that old beauty was what drew me to your video. I didn't know much about how spring tanks were built, much less how to revive one. This means that I found this video very informative. I'll be honest that I've gone digital in the 21st Century, I these days I play through digital pedals run into my computer and out of it's speakers. Seeing your video has me looking sideways at that old, sweet Performer, though ...😎
Could be a simple and quick fix, and that reverb may just have something special to your ears once you get it going, it's always worth trying to fin out!
Hello I have a VOX combo ampli transistors from the 80s It has been a long time since the overdrive works. Neither does the reverb. I listened to the springs and imagined something broken. Now I know that they are part of that effect. Maybe one day I dare to open it and see how to solve it. Your video has given me ideas... Thank you.
I recently scored a 35 watt, early 80s Hohner amp from a pawn shop for $10. They said it didn’t work. Well the clean channel works perfectly and the reverb sounds glorious. I took it apart to see what it was and it’s a tiny 2” plate. The dirty channel doesn’t work, which I’m guessing is the one they were plugging into. I don’t think I’ll even bother fixing it since the clean works so well. It’s now my garage practice amp.
Yeah a gang of marauders broke in and stole all my camera gear. Darryl and I were able to track them to Montgomery, AL and through several blood duels and an unfortunate but necessary marriage to the tribe elder's daughter we were able to get them back.
I liked your video. I fixed my reverb years ago myaelf almost the same way. I still enjoyed watching you do it to yours. Thanks and have a great one.
