I drive a bus with a DT 466 and I have found the best way to cold start is to cycle the pre-heaters four or five times before cranking the engine. She always goes.
I drive a Thomas school bus with a DT530 out in colorado. 2 cycles down to 0 degrees and 4 cycles does it down to -20 degrees. Always fun to laugh ad the drivers with the new cummins jobs that won’t start when they don’t plug em in 😂
put a hot plate 1"below the oil pan ,and put a trickle charger on a battery .plug them in 1 hr before starting and it will start .the warm oil will allow the motor to spin over faster .
@aeastman16 hydraulics need power to operate, so the truck had to be running in order to build up pressure. same and oil pressure, light will show before the truck is running and wont go off for a couple seconds after it is turned on
I drive an '87 and a '97 International with the DT 466 and 466E respectively. NEITHER has a block heater and NEITHER have glow plugs. Both start not bad in the cold but the older one bucks, chucks burps and farts while trying to warm up. only once in very cold weather did it fail to start.
Little trick i use to start our transit truck which has no heater is to get an old peice of flexy hose from an old hoover stick it on the exaust of the tractor or car and shove it under the bonnet. Few min of that and shes away.
I used to drive an International concrete mixer, powered by a mechanical DT-530,300hp. Never had any issues cold starting that thing. That old truck would be loaded and on the way to a job, while the other drivers were trying to start those new gee-whiz,electronic M-11's.
Oh what an old vid 😮 Getting that bear out of hibernation was a real challenge. Nowadays u can get an affordable heating pad that attaches and unattaches quickly for underneath the oil pan.
left up, right down...on your cruse control buttons...push and hold left up and push and hold right down at the same time...this will give you an ERROR reading. Let it run a system check then turn your left turn signal on and push both buttons up at same time and hold. This should help clear out ERRORs. Keep key in on position and park brake on.
only use ether once the wait to start is out and starts to crank over, she will back fire ether out the air cleaner if not careful. the wait to start is a air/grid heater in the air intake manifold. sometimes they fail, and super hard to start..the 466 is a HEUI engine hydralically actuated unit injector.basically oil pressure driven injectors.needs a volume of oil to activate injectors.which also makes it hard to start. basic help is heat, and always is heat for any diesel in cold temps.
When she started to fire on the 2nd to last attempt before the battery died, if you had kept cranking she probably would have started. Getting heat into the cylinders is the key to starting a diesel this cold. At that point she was making heat, you just had to keep going. As soon as you stop the heat stops too. Don't be afraid to use a little throttle too. Once the engine is at a certain RPM the throttle control is given to the driver rather than being held back so that can force a bit more fuel in to give it that final kick into starting. If she's lumpy at idle hold the throttle open to give her a bit more revs (200rpm more than idle) and it'll smooth out in no time. Bring back the indirect injection engines without the electronic crap, they'd start in anything with a good set of glow plugs! =)
I drive the 2006 international 4300 dt466 everyday. Yours looks identical inside. But I don't have any trouble in the winter like you did. I live in Newfoundland Canada 🇨🇦 it does get cold here, never seen anything like this before. I hope your truck is still running ✌
i work for internation , the 466's we hard starts any colder then -15, even worse in -40c if we had a no start when cold block heater and tiger torch on the oil pan until the oil was warm, international called for 15w40 all year long..warranty would be void if it wasnt 15w40.other then ether is about the only way to keep it turning over until enough heat is produced to take over. if she doesnt start on the first go at it stop and heat her up, she will go after about 10 min of a tiger torch.
has to crank at atleast 250rpm to start. It was doing 100rpm. you tear up the starter when you try to start it with a dead battery. Lots of amperage and low voltage messes it up.
There is a good possibility the oil rack in the head is leaking oil and the high pressure oil pump is having trouble building pressure to fire the injectors…in any case if my truck was hard starting like that I would be plugging it in even for just a half hour..be better than cranking the crap out of it!..
Starters hate lower power conditions, ragging on the starter till it will hardly spin doesn't actually help friend. I've replaced enough doing that same thing myself.
You should have cycled the grid heaters a few times before attempting to start it. When ever its below 0F out i have done that with my Cummins. always fires up. Them internationals are a pia in the cold.
Internationals have issues with the cold.. Friend of mine drives one with the tow company he works for, just an international 4300 boom truck, sat all night at -20, 5 hours of cables from another truck AND the block heater, wouldnt start. Finally cops got bitchy we had to pull start it in 4th Gear for it to go.
@BobcatNinja2124 I would point out that you should have hooked the battery charger up first... that comes from 8 years of living in Alaska... once you hit -20℉ you just kinda assume the battery is going to be killed by cranking :-p heck I used a booster even after leaving the block heater going all night (I know you don't have the block heater), it just helps prolong the life of your expensive equipment :-)
shouldn't it fire up first time.I know its cold but its a fairly new truck.maybe use better anti freeze our a good tune up and service. but its a cool truck.
@aeastman16 even inf hydraulic systems, on a truck this big, there needs to be a pump that puts artificial pressure in the system, there's no way you could make that kind of pressure just by pressing the brake pedal
personaly i hate grid heater or glow plug it just kil the battry befor u try to start some brake cleaner insted on ether starting fluid do the trick pretty well and it run smother then ether
Just to state something it doesn't have glowplugs. A DT466 has never had plugs far as what I was told. I was told older engines like that started with compression and newer ones like this have a intake/grid heater. You will see also he did have a wait to start light on the first time before he tried which was the intake/grid heater.
Looking for opinions on using an 2008 International 4300 ambulance DT466 for an RV conversion. A lot of Internationals out there cheap. Wanting a Freightliner but hard to find and more expensive. Should I settle?
Got a DT360 now? Same engine family, both great but the 466 is a hella lot bigger dimension wise. If you do have the 360 turn it up some and make 466 power with a lot less weight, work & $$$. Just don't go nuts on the boost or wrap it too tight. All post 2003 DT's are smogged into oblivion and don't live near as long, I'd avoid them.
diesals are a bitch to start when thay are very cold like this because you have to heat the cylinder up for it to reach flashpoint to ignight the fuel and you do it by cranking it but your fighting againts the cold because compression heats up the cylinder when the compression on a desial enigine is at least 500 psi and you need to heat it up to its flash point your have some time getting that to happen
Make sure you run the fast idle, press the ON then press RESUME on the cruise. The engine can not burn the fuel at that low of an RPM properly, don't take my word for it, read your instruction manual.
***** Mr. Butler, I am realy amazed. -18 C 4 attempts 15+20+35+40 sec. in 5min 40sec. Just see the Voltmeter, preheat at 10.5V Start engine at 11.5V and when cranking the voltmeter go to about 10V and below. Isn't it amazing? How many batteries have this truck, what brand are they, what is the total in amperes, what is the total starting current, how old is the starter and what brand is it? All these matter?! P.S. Driver in Canada since 2004, total expirience 26y. Best Regards!
That need is built into the cuircit board behind the cluster can't bypass it plus d.o.t. state u need to have some sort of warning sound for low air p.s.i
You don't want to give it fuel, the computer will give it what it needs when it needs it. It is just as easy to flood a diesel as it is a gas engine and the results are the same, no go.
I drive a bus with a DT 466 and I have found the best way to cold start is to cycle the pre-heaters four or five times before cranking the engine. She always goes.

You need to have 12-14 volts if you wish to start a massive vehicle such as this one.
كيف اعالج قطع تيار الكهربائيات المحرك
I was going to say that amps too low
This is an average vehicle not massive...
Edit : it is only a 7.6L engine...
Nope. 12.6 is fully charged. After a 30 second cycle of the grid box at 200 amps or so, you’re lucky to have 11.5 volts
@aeastman16 hydraulics need power to operate, so the truck had to be running in order to build up pressure. same and oil pressure, light will show before the truck is running and wont go off for a couple seconds after it is turned on
Block Heater = Longevity

That battery voltage is dropping off way to much I know its cold as hell but still
I used to drive an International concrete mixer, powered by a mechanical DT-530,300hp. Never had any issues cold starting that thing. That old truck would be loaded and on the way to a job, while the other drivers were trying to start those new gee-whiz,electronic M-11's.
U need a block heater AND a coolant heater like A Wabasto if you gonna start in the cold.... maybe some ether too
Sean Dale spraying ether on the grid heater is an easy way to burn down the truck and or lose your eyebrows.
Seems like International needs to start making engine block heaters standard equipment.
Oh what an old vid 😮 Getting that bear out of hibernation was a real challenge. Nowadays u can get an affordable heating pad that attaches and unattaches quickly for underneath the oil pan.

Duluiyah I know this an old comment. But how do you use the cruise control? Labels are wore off on the truck at work.

it vibrated!
Lucky man in the driver's seat. Definitely a lucky man.
0:43 0:53 I like the sound of the old preheaters & the old alarm noise in it

you should cycle glow plugs or what ever this truck have two three times and crank it. Great Video
lolus pololus It has intake heaters.
@Johnny64ism ohhhhh yea good thinking, how could I have forgotten to plug in the block heater... oh yea it doesn't have one...
i work for internation , the 466's we hard starts any colder then -15, even worse in -40c if we had a no start when cold block heater and tiger torch on the oil pan until the oil was warm, international called for 15w40 all year long..warranty would be void if it wasnt 15w40.other then ether is about the only way to keep it turning over until enough heat is produced to take over. if she doesnt start on the first go at it stop and heat her up, she will go after about 10 min of a tiger torch.
Mine fired right up at -38F windchill. Cycled it twice. Grid heater no plugs.
Hold the panel up/down switch(Next to headlight switch) and trip switch at the same time. That beep will stop till its started or key is cycled...
This 02 looks like a 2018 straight gorgeous

that tuck some getting started, ( now all I need is the heater on yay)

Mine starts like that in the summer.

imagine having to do this every morning for about 6 months
Current Maxxforce is basically a relabeled DT, just built to comply with the current emissions standards.
You'll get more pissed if you had to listen to a Freightliner M2 low air warning, mo beep but just a loud constant beep.
I have this same problem with my international huge huge problem getting it started
I think the main thing we should be grateful for here is the fact that it has good oil pressure. Yes good oil pressure.
Have you had to rebuild the starter?
Wow, it came really close to firing up without charger help......
С пуско-зарядным можно стартёр хоть сколько гонять ))) надо было просто 3 раза погреть свечи
@BobcatNinja2124 I would point out that you should have hooked the battery charger up first... that comes from 8 years of living in Alaska... once you hit -20℉ you just kinda assume the battery is going to be killed by cranking :-p
heck I used a booster even after leaving the block heater going all night (I know you don't have the block heater), it just helps prolong the life of your expensive equipment :-)
Alright it took some effort but you finally got her to fire up
4k rpm?
shouldn't it fire up first time.I know its cold but its a fairly new truck.maybe use better anti freeze our a good tune up and service. but its a cool truck.
@aeastman16

Direct injection engines really do hate that cold! I have an IDI diesel that starts at 5F on 1 turn. No doubt it would do the same at -5F too.
personaly i hate grid heater or glow plug it just kil the battry befor u try to start some brake cleaner insted on ether starting fluid do the trick pretty well and it run smother then ether
I wonder why does the Tach go up to 4000 RPM even though International uses diesel applications why does it go that high up?
Great video.
Kyle
1°F ? Have no idea if is up or down 0°C
you need like just under 12 volts to start the engine i find cycling the engine twice bumps up the voltage dont ask me why lol.
How to start my its been giving hard starting for long now
Lol i drive a dump truck almost identical to this, once it starts turning faster pump the gas pedal a couple times and she will fire right up.
Why is the brake pressure light on if you've got hydraulic brakes?
I'm surprised a truck like this was built without air brakes.
why didnt you cycle your glow plugs a few times to warm up the cylinder
Just to state something it doesn't have glowplugs. A DT466 has never had plugs far as what I was told. @renaultbaccara Its a 2006 with about 50,000 miles
I have the same issues every winter ,,, why dont you plug it in?
or does it mean the engine is idling off?
I'm pretty sure a diesel would be a PITA to start no matter what country it's from.
Can tell it doesn't have enough battery to start just by looking at the gauge.
How is this a DT and The wait to start light is on?
Which yere was the truck and how many miles did he have?
@Hydro022 Btw it was -20 Celcius.. so.. idk what that would be in Farenhieght
can you show where the coolant temp sensor is located on a 2005 4300? thanks
I LOVE THE GAGES
Why

does that BEEEEP BEEEEP BEEEEP mean the battery is dying?
Would have started if you hadn't stopped cranking when it was just about going.... Instead you stopped and killed the battery trying again.
Not sure if all that smoke is the engine or your starter. HaHa
Where is the air gauge
good thing it wasnt a maxxforce!! youde be there till the snow melted
Man
Yup
no experience !! next time use just a little starting fluid in the breather !
In what car did you sit in the beginning of this video? Looked familiar. Audi?
A4
what year is it?
nice truck
is that your owen company
thickened oil makes it hard to build icp up. the oil in the hose between the hpop and the head has to be damn near tar that cold.
intake air heater?
Come on baby, come on you can do it, Come on Come on
MAXXFORCE DT 466 is a Mercedes BENTZ E390T
Webasto heater.. and that starter is done
Make sure you run the fast idle, press the ON then press RESUME on the cruise. The engine can not burn the fuel at that low of an RPM properly, don't take my word for it, read your instruction manual.
Thinks its time to invest $44 in one though
Nice Audi!
Do this engine have glow plugs ?
No
It does that’s what (wait to start) is for
need to invest in some either.
Either the worst thing for a diesel. If must use brake cleaner is a little better for a diesel engine.
He should've done the glow plug dance!
Is that the 466 or the 466E?
wooooooowww amazing baterry!!

maybe cut the wire to the annoying beep? lol
Because Low Air Brake hear beep
That need is built into the cuircit board behind the cluster can't bypass it plus d.o.t. state u need to have some sort of warning sound for low air p.s.i
Damn break pressure alarm :| i think they put that in just to piss you off
@TjMerrigan11 Its my families company
from 2005 diesels have glow plugs from 2005
That was almost a successful failure. The sad part about cold starts is when your batteries die
Hearing that beep in the morning... :-/
By the way, what is the sound that the truck produces while not started yet??
that beep was saying that the air tanks are low.
That would be the secondary motor trying to heat up the glow plugs which in turn helps start the actual diesel engine itself.
That would be the truck groaning because someone wasn't smart enough to plug it in or glow plug it prior to trying to start it!
Ah it's probably just related to the temperature, okay! :-)
Amy Moore no glow plugs in a DT466E
I’m not working when it’s that cold. Another reason NOT to buy a Cornbinder.
Are you even giving it any fuel??? Zeees
You don't want to give it fuel, the computer will give it what it needs when it needs it. It is just as easy to flood a diesel as it is a gas engine and the results are the same, no go.
