I worked from the PDF documents mostly, the stroke order is gold, and I easily passed the JLPT kanji section after remembering most mnemonics. Thanks Light! So happy book 2 is coming soon!!

So some of the components like the top of 色 you say is "knife" and other items like the right side of 船 you say are "eight" and "mouth". So some parts are "standard" (e.g. eight and mouth) where as some are -- I assume -- made up on the spot ク = knife. When studying 2000+ kanji how does someone remember when to use a one-off component and when does someone need to say "what's the (actual/consistent) name/meaning of that part? What about kanji like 負, is the top of that knife, too? As for 船 the left part 舟 is it really necessary to have the complicated explanation that you made as opposed to just remembering it as "ship" or "boat" as it is its own kanji that means that and is used in lots of boat-related kanji so is repeated over and over in the kanji panthology. By the way, do you use Kanji SVG for the stroke diagrams?

Hi, thanks for the thoughtful questions. This is still early in the series, which means that each smaller kanji part has a meaning / memorable mnemonic attached creating the larger kanji. These parts remain mostly consistent throughout. (For memorization purposes)
If the larger kanji has been covered before, the full Kanji will be used to create the upcoming kanji, if that makes sense. Eventually easier kanji will be recognized / (acquired if learner reads regularly) and the mnemonics fade. The goal is not to forever memorize the mnemonics but to create links in the brain assisting memorization and understanding.
Again, I recommend people to read often and follow the method suited to their needs. If uncertain about starting this series, try the first 20 in the free video series. Best - L

@@-LightSmit If 船 is learned before 舟 when someone learns the second, yes, you can point out that the student has already seen it. A classic example of this would be 近 is learned very yearly, but 一斤 (a loaf/cut of bread) while useful as a component, is not considered high priority as a kanji itself (and for teaching japanese kids, typically wouldn't be pointed out). I agree with you that the mnemonics are not something that needs to be retained forever. Like training wheels on a bicycle, once you can ride the bicycle, the training wheels come off. I learned about 3000 kanji in the 1990s using Heisig's books. I don't remember all of the keywords, but for the most part I remember the meanings and readings, and perhaps more importantly I remember the parts and what the parts do in the kanji (i.e. if the part is the phonetic component or the semantic component, etc.) Just like people use mnemonics and components and keywords to befriend the kanji, but that doesn't mean they know Japanese, once a learner moves "from kanji to Japanese" the learner's relationship with kanji necessarily changes. I can read just about anything in Japanese, but it's really challenging to dictate a conversation by hand. But for my life here in Japan, it doesn't cause massive problems.

@@karlint39Thanks for sharing, and well done on learning so many characters. Yes, the radicals mostly remain later on. Having mental links to kanji is a very valuable thing speeding up the learning process and reading.
Like you’ve mentioned 一斤, which I hope Kanji Café learners would instantly think “axe used to cut loaf”. It’s these links that form bridges for faster memorization, though reading and constant exposure are essential.
      Best :)

are your explainations for the parts that make up the kanji also available on the pdf/anki/spiral book?

@@Felven The mnemonics, yes. They are all on the right side of the paper. Have fun :)
