From watching these videos, it’s always been well known by “music circles” that Sondheim is a genius, but you highlighting just how well structured so-called “lesser” more pop composers like Schwartz are is really enlightening. A whole new appreciation for just how good Wicked is

Still really learning a lot of music theory but I really do love these. Wicked is truly the difference between a score and an album. It's very nice to get a real break down on the reoccurring themes like this. I never picked up on "What is this feeling" as the intro, I feel like a fool.
A bit of an off topic request but would you ever be interested in talking about anything from Mormon? I'm really impressed with how that show parodies so many theater songs without directly copying. If you had any insight how musicians take inspiration or make reference to things musically while avoiding blatant plagiarizing that'd be kinda neat.

He's BACK! I love breaking down the score, it's helping me understand music patterns! I love Wicked, a lot of the patterns I've never noticed until you've pointed them out.

Kevin: It's a very simple song.
Me, musically illiterate: IT'S SO COMPLEX

So clever! I love Wicked. I got to see it in London 2 years ago and I literally cried about 20 times. So magical. Thanks for the breakdown! Love seeing how it all fits together 😀

That chord right before the no one mourns the wicked theme comes in is what I think makes the song and show amazing. People always feel there's a happy ending to everything but in real life, that is not always the case. That made this fictional character real. Any little girl who grew up with Disney has experienced this moment when you realize life isn't a disney princess ending. That chord change is a representation of that. It's a great message because the show continues show how Elphaba works thru the rejection and still manages to get her happy ending. Rejection and failure is a way of life and it sucks but it's part of being human and overcoming that obstacle makes you a more fulfilled person. There are more people in the world who can relate to elphaba than glinda. The writers struck gold with this theme.

I wish I could get the the music only from all my faves. I'm obsessed with scores! I have seen Wicked in 2 states, 3 countries. Flew to London to see Idina reprise her role as Elphaba. We slept outside for 27 hours to get front row seats to her last three shows. We were called the Wicked 10 and she called us out in "One Short Day." And bought us donuts one morning lol
