How To Make Char for Flint and Steel Fire Making

This is char made from spongy, rotten wood, punk for short. I collect the punk from rotting logs and find the softest bits that don't crumble to dust. I used an altoids tin with a couple holes in the top to burn the punk in, same as how charcloth is made. The punk burns with little oxygen, which drives off all the unstable natural gasses, and essentially only leaves charcoal behind. I know when it is done cooking in the fire because smoke no longer comes out of the vent holes in the top. I remove it from the fire, allow five minutes to cool, and then it's ready to use. This char easily catches sparks from a steel striker and quickly forms into a robust, hot ember. My favorite part about it is how readily available the materials for it are in nature. I always keep a full container of char with my flint and steel in my haversack and backpack so I have back ups when I'm outdoors.

A video of such beautiful simpliticity that even my comment seems to disturb the tranquil serenity of the production. 10/10 no notes.

may I suggest swapping over to a traditional 1700's brass tinderbox, the altoids type box is OK but not very traditional. Plus it is far more satisfying to use a traditional tinderbox with flint and steel IMHO.
Charred punk wood is good, very sustainable but I do think charcloth has its place. I do find charred punk wood spotty ignition wise sometimes, though the best-charred punk wood is truly a wonderful tinder for flint and steel.

I’m planning to make a wild clay jar of sorts to use instead of the modern Altoids tin. Should make a good video

Can definitely use one of the tins that pulls back so you can make a LiveFire type box that you can control the burn with…

I grabbed some punkwood that's cracked like dice but somewhat soft on the bottom side of a log. Will that make good char?

Best try it out and see how it goes! I’ve avoided the cube shaped rotting wood in the past because it’s crumbly and hard, opting for rot with more water exposure during decomposition, but that doesn’t mean your stuff won’t work. Let me know how it goes!

do *you* primarily use flint and steel for fire?
also when do you plan on opening up your etsy shop again?
