It is not a new group they've been there for generation i even don't know whic generation they are now because the graduation sistem.
it is like NCT(unlimited members) but in different country (main is japan):
•JKT48 (Indonesia)
•AKB48, HKT48, NMB48, SKE48...etc(Japan, if u know iz*one japanese member they are from here but Sakura is already graduated & became lesserafim member)
•SNH48 (China)
•BNK48 (Thailand)
•MNL48 (Philipines) and many more from other country in asia (i just don't know all of them😅)

hahaha actually 48 is taken from the nickname of a producer in the 48 group, his nickname is "Shiba" and in Chinese "Shi = 4" & "Ba = 8" (correct me if I'm wrong)

Long short explanation. JKT48 was the first sister group of AKB48 that was located outside Japan. They named it 48, not because they have 48 members. They named it 48 because their office was in Chiba Prefecture (in Japanese, the words "Chiba" and "48" sound similar). 48G has an event named SSK or Senbatsu Sousenkyo, this event will choose who from the group will perform and act in their MV. Normally, fans will choose/vote for their idol to be in the MV. And normally, one MV consists of 16 members. But this is JKT48 New Era. Based on Wikipedia, JKT48 herself consists of 39 members until now (after reconstructing and still counting the member that will be graduating soon). And the total of all 48G members is 955 members (AKB48, SNH48, JKT48, HKT, BNK, etc.)
