For the first time since baseball was on CBS, an NLCS without the Braves.

I can't help but watch this with Ankiel and not feel bad for him... But the complete opposite because he survived this... Went back to AAA and then went on to be a decent position player and hitter in MLB for years to come. That's nuts on so many levels. If Hollywood insists on making more MLB movies a movie on Ankiels career would be great. To not only survive the "yips" but survive it happening in the post season like this... And then make it back to mlb as a former pitcher now as a productive hitter and outfielder...good enough to stay on a mlb roster and start for years in MLB is absolutely incredible. Just surviving the yips seems nearly impossible for most players. Chuck Knoblach was a legit star, multiple time world series champion, and widely recognized as the best second baseman in MLB at the time. Yet despite all that he still didn't get offered a decent contract by anyone after the "yips" started in the bronx. As a Yankee fan I actually ran into chuck one day on the subway and he was such a nice guy and talked to me for several stops. I remember feeling so bad he got the yips like that and in all places NY with our vicious press. I'll never forget the day after he blew that ALCS game against the Indians by arguing the call while letting the ball roll away... The front page of the newspapers read "Bloch Head" with an extremely unflattering picture of Chuck". The NY press was brutal lol So It's no small feat to overcome the yips at the MLB level. It must feel like everybody in the world is watching you and expecting you to "F'up" anytime the ball comes anywhere near you. I can't even imagine what that has to feel like. Ankiel deserves WAY more credit than he gets. What he did was absolutely incredible in hindsight

The Atlanta Braves (95-67, won NL East by a game) faces the St. Louis Cardinals (95-67, 10 games over Cincy in NL Central) in the NL Division Series at Busch Stadium. And rather than go with Darryl Kile in Game 1, the Cards opted to go with rookie Rick Ankiel to go opposite Maddux. And the Redbirds jumped on Maddux for 6 runs in the first inning, capped by a 3-run single (assisted by an error) by Placido Polanco. But in the 3rd, Ankiel suddenly came down with Steve Blass disease as he uncorked FIVE wild pitches and four walks, leading to four runs scoring. The bullpen came in to relieve Ankiel and kept the Braves to one run in 6 1/3 innings for a 7-5 St. Louis triumph.
In Game 2, the Cards roughed up Tom Glavine for 7 runs in four innings as Mark McGwire came up with a pinch-hit home run in a 10-4 St. Louis victory.
At Turner Field for Game 3, Vina led off the game with a home run off Kevin Millwood. Two innings later, Edmonds hits his 2nd HR of the series to put the Redbirds ahead to stay. The Cardinals won, 7-1, to sweep the Braves and head to the NLCS. For a team that relies on pitching, Atlanta allowed 24 runs in the three games while they have now lost 7 straight playoff contests. And for the first time since 1990, the Braves will NOT play in the NLCS.

95 Reds, 96 Cardinals, 2000 Cardinals- win NL Central, sweep NLDS
Maybe the Astros truly were weighing down this division in October

You could say the baseball world rejoiced when the Braves were swept in this NLDS. For the 1st time in more than a decade the NLCS would NOT be played in Atlanta. Thus began a period of decline for the Braves, who would again reach the NLCS the following season but would then drop three straight NLDS, all in 5 games, with the deciding game on their home turf, from 2002-2004. They'd lose again in '05, this time in 4 games, in that memorable 18-inning game down in Houston. It wouldn't be until their current run of success that the Braves would finally enter a string of division titles & postseason appearances, all culminating in their 2nd World Series championship in Atlanta this past season.

This 2000 NLDS is famous for the following things: Rick Ankiel and his pitching problems in game 1, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine getting smacked in games 1 and 2, and Jim Edmonds looking like Superman. I mean, talk about one player by himself demolishing a team in a division series.
So sadly, for me as a Mets fan, there will not be a back-to-back NLCS matchup against Atlanta. I guess that is what Atlanta gets for losing game 162 against the Rockies that way, which made Atlanta then not have home-field in the division series against the Cardinals..
This 2000 NLDS is payback for the 1996 NLCS. These two teams also faced each other in the 1982 NLCS

After being perennial contestants in the NLCS, the Braves are eliminated in the Division Series for the first time since it's implementation 5 years prior; something that would happen four times in the next five years for this franchise.

This would be the start of the Braves just never winning a playoff series. It wouldn't be until 2020 when the Braves finally won a playoff series against the Reds in the wildcard.

Indeed they were a constant presence throughout the previous decade except for 1990 and 1994 by default.
