Hello I have a question: why do you say that HOF must always happen before SOF? If the rainfall intensity is lower than the infiltration capacity, then isn't it possible the soil will get saturated without forming any HOF, only SOF? (regarding the slide at around 15+ mins)

Hello! Completely understand where you are coming from and its good that you can point this out cause its an area that is notorious for causing confusion. Essentially, think of SOF as being conditional, it has to be saturated FIRST before the rainfall episode for this type of overland flow to occur. IF we look at a cause where the soil is not wet at all (no antecedent moisture), is not ice-related, then only HOF will occur.
So to answer your question, yes, it is possible that the soil can get saturated without forming any HOF, but this does not mean that it has formed SOF yet. Only unless during the next episode of rainfall, there is still high levels of soil antecedent moisture, will the rainfall be unable to infiltrate due to saturated soil and hence SOF will take place here.
In the video when I mention that HOF must happen before SOF is assuming that the soil is dry, and that rainfall int > infil capacity, but if in another case where this did not happen (HOF did not happen), then yes, the soil will just be saturated and we will need to wait till the next rainfall episode to see if SOF occurs.
Hope this answers your question. Feel free to follow up if it is still confusing.

this is very nice although i think it would have made more sense to teach about storage before flows
