I see your point with the visual gags but to me they actually play a role in JJK, to an extent. Yeah they very much are that very standard gag type animations but often they serve the purpose of showing that the main characters were watching are KIDS, who are prone to doing childish goofy things. With one of the many themes of JJK being childhood, and that childhood being tarnished by jujutsu society the lack of as many visual gags through most of the culling games and shinjuku showdown shown just how much of their childhood these characters have been forced to give up for the sake of their mission.
One thing I always liked abt JJK is that it doesn’t let the cast have its cake and eat it too when it comes to their youth. Often shonen characters can be in super high stress situations but still somehow always have time to be kids on the side. JJK doesn’t let the sorcerers do that. Once shit hit the fan there hasn’t been time for them to be kids- only sorcerers with a mission.
That being said your points are valid I just like to look a bit too deeply into things I like and JJK is one of them

  • @ianharrison5758

33:07 The explanation for Yuji being able to fight the way he does is actually pretty simple. 1. There’s more to him than just what we see and anything else is spoilers. 2. He’s simply a combat genius. He’s said himself he’s just always been good at fighting. He is the kind of talent at h2h combat that Gojo is at jujutsu.
Tldr: he’s just that talented. 80% of ability in JJK is talent so 80% of what we see from any character is innate talent

30:26 I get how ppl think Sukuna has a motive, which could just be he wants to conquer the jujutsu society. but i can't stree it enough. He does not have an iota of motivation, to be the way he is or do the things he does other than, he's stronger than everyone and he's going to do as he pleases.
His ideology is literally just knowing he's the strongest, which is his greatest fear, same as Gojo, whats the point in being the strongest, if you have no one to challenge you, it gets boring. So until sukuna gets defeated, he's gonna live how he wants, with no innate turmoil.

This means that despite having a lot in common and being able to understand each other, in that way they are complete opposites

this was an amazing video!!! new sub >:)
also, regarding Yuuji’s physical combat prowess-in the start of season 1 (after he “died”) he trained with Gojo for two months so that by the time he came back for the Goodwill Event (fight with the sister school of Kyoto) his knowledge of Jujutsu as a martial arts would’ve been more refined, especially since it was Gojo who was training him. Idk about the rest of his Machoke-Lucario-Sonic physical abilities compressed into the body of a cinnamon roll (forget about Gojo having to activate Limitless for the rest of his existence, Yuuji’s activating Innate Superhuman Physical Ability since day 1), but that’s all I can say about that.
Speaking of Gojo-I literally went to read up on the infinite series and Achilles and the Tortoise (since Gege suggested it in the explanation pages) and it was pretty interesting. I hate math, but it works really well. Also, if you think Junpei’s arc was insufficient, we got even less of him in the manga. 😞 So they actually added a little more, which I liked (I watched the anime before reading.) Junpei’s death was so tragic for me because he falls under the character archetype I love and can sometimes relate to-the moral arguments we’re shown whenever he’s with Mahito (and later when he fights Yuuji), especially with “the opposite of love is indifference” being tweaked a little to fit Japan’s standards (since they use “love” as a word much more rarely). It’s like when someone cares so much but they still want to do the things they love, such that every opportunity they get is trampled down. (i.e. bullying) They care so much that it hurts, and the part that hit for me personally was when he shouted to Yuuji, “if humans had hearts, then you’re saying that those same people cursed my mom with those hearts!”
Last thing-one of the things JJK is deprived of is filler, because while yeah, Gege is allowed to kill off characters (it’s his own story), they still need the buildup prior so that the more attached we are the more it hurts. Like…I wish we got to see the main trio doing some more fun goofy teenager shenanigans before everything went downhill in Shibuya. I love the main trio with all my heart so erm, paint without the t frfr.

There are some things I realized about the villains in Jujutsu Kaisen bit by bit, over time, from rerearding and rewatching. Stuff that took time to percolate. I don't want to necessarily tell you what your interpretation should be, but I'm hoping that by riffing on it here, you might find something of value from my perspective. Apologies in advance for how long this comment is about to get.
For me, I had a similar lack of investment in Mahito and the other Disaster Curses until I heard something from an interview GeGe did. GeGe said that if there was one thing they wanted to ask people to keep in mind while watching or reading Jujutsu Kaisen, it's that every single character believes that they're right. So when you try to really take what each character says seriously as what they believe, it suddenly makes the Disaster Curses a lot more compelling.
When you think about it, while most cursed spirits don't seem conscious, the ones that are sentient, the ones able to think about what their own existence means, live a really fucked up life. They're basically born from psychic garbage, the negative emotions that people don't want to engage with or do anything with, so they just leak into the environment like pollution. And then, when cursed spirits are born from that, they act on their instincts - same as a human or an animal - and they're exorcised, no questions asked.
Once again, for the cursed spirits who seem to have no emotions and no reason to exist besides killing, there's no need to question it, really. But Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon are a completely different story. Jogo genuinely sees the existence that cursed spirits live in as unjust, Hanami is enraged at how humans have defiled nature, and Dagon seems to just mentally be this innocent kid who sees Jogo and Hanami as family and is trying to do what will make them happy. Seeing Dagon get so viscerally angry about how sorcerers don't even call them by their names while Naobito is just up his own ass monologuing about framerates is a hell of a lot more tense when you try to really see things from his side.
As for Mahito, he's fascinating to me because he is a hollow, know-nothing nihilist. Like Mahito is misanthropy given form. He has all this incredible potential, and just uses it to hurt others. Consider the fact that Mahito could literally heal any illness, and instead, he uses his power to murder and defile human bodies into these twisted caricatures of themselves. He's also full of bullshit, like there's a scene where pseudo-Geto points out that the fact Geto's soul is still exerting influence over his body means that the soul and body can't be neatly separated, thereby disproving Mahito's theory about souls...
...And Mahito just half-asses an answer about "Well, our techniques are different, so maybe it's just not the same for me as for you." Pseudo-Geto actually entertains the notion and finds something poetic in it, but at the end of the day, Mahito just says whatever bullshit to justify what he wants to do. Ultimately, despite all the potential for growth he has, he's slapped down by Itadori because he has nothing worth fighting for except his own whims and pleasures. Once it stops being fun, Mahito has nothing that can keep him going - nothing like Jogo's conviction that lets him plant his fucking feet and fight Sukuna to the death in spite of the strength difference.
I can see why you see Sukuna as just the "evil for the giggles" villain, and to be fair, he is really just a very detailed version of that. I'm going to do something that's apparently very difficult and not talk about spoilers, but suffice to say, we get a little more context for how Sukuna sees things later in the manga. Just going off of the anime so far, Sukuna is closer to... Hisoka Morow from Hunter X Hunter than, say, the Joker. He's a thrillseeker and pleasureseeker who enjoys the struggle as much as the kill. Sukuna doesn't just want to see the world burn, he wants to enjoy the world through bloodshed, madness, and chaos. He loves sorcery, loves conflict, finds different weird techniques interesting, and he derives pleasure from fighting and challenging himself in one way or another. It's why he literally fights fire with fire in his fight with Jogo: to make it interesting, and see if his flames can overcome the flames of a literal fire spirit.
That speech Sukuna gives Jogo is, I'm not shitting you, the one thing from the Shibuya Incident I have thought about the most over time. Since it just takes everything that's taken as a given about Sukuna and complicates all of it so severely to where you need to rethink everything. Because we see Sukuna as having no compassion for anyone else, and yet here he is, watching a cursed spirit - the kind sorcerers typically don't even contemplate as having any reason to live - dying in front of him, and he extends his counsel, congratulating Jogo on being strong, even if not as strong as Sukuna himself. The exact opposite of how Gojo treated prevailing over Jogo back in season one, in fact: whereas Gojo mocks Jogo, rubbing it in, calling him weak, Sukuna shows him respect and, I would argue, compassion. He didn't need to say shit to Jogo, but he chose to make sure that Jogo knew someone respected him before he died. It makes Sukuna so much more fascinating to see that he has these values, but they're so twisted and harsh compared to our main characters.
Lastly, I think that Toji is a little hard to wrap your head around because a lot of his story is told through subtext. One of the things that frustrates me about GeGe's writing is how details that feel really useful for unlocking a character get pushed into volume extras instead of being shown or at least implied in the story. Toji's scar comes from a time when his own family locked him in a room full of cursed spirits and made him fight his way out. He was abused in a very similar way to Maki because of his own Heavenly Restriction, minus how Maki had to also put up with the virulent misogyny of the Zen'in Clan. The way he was raised ingrained this belief in Toji that he's a fuck-up, that he was born a fuck-up and is destined to always be a fuck-up.
And yet, after Toji got out of the Zen'in Clan and started a family with his wife, took her name, had a son, something changed. Something that doesn't come across very well in English is the fact that Megumi is almost always a girl's name. Yet the reason Toji named his son Megumi is because of what that name means: "gift" or "blessing." Megumi is the one good thing - other than maybe his wife - that the world ever gave Toji without shaking him down for something else.
I think that the implication is, after Megumi's mother died, Toji got back into being a jujutsu hitman in order to pay the bills.
He's a somewhat supernatural interpretation of something very, very real: the deadbeat dad who can't seem to figure out how to raise his kids because his own parents fucked him up so bad. The man's been abused and made to feel like he has no intrinsic value as a person, because of how the Zen'in Clan fetishize cursed techniques and how he has no cursed technique and no cursed energy either. So the way he sees it, the only way he can do right by his son is to not be around. When he made the decision to sell Megumi back to the Zen'in Family, it's not really because he wants the money, it's because he sees talent for sorcery in Megumi and believes that Megumi should have a chance to realize that potential by being raised around the Zen'in Clan's resources. Since Megumi has a powerful cursed technique, he won't be abused like Toji was.
It's why Toji is relieved when Megumi says that his family name is Fushiguro, not Zen'in. He sees that Megumi grew up to do the right thing and is on his way to becoming a strong sorcerer, without needing to be tainted by the Zen'in family curse. And it's why Toji says "Good for you." and uses the last bit of control he has over his body to kill himself and protect Megumi.
When Toji tried to fight Gojo the second time, he was trying to prove his worth by defeating the strongest sorcerer. But when he says he "rejected his true nature," he means that he only sees fighting Gojo as a measure of his own worth because the Zen'in Clan would tell him it was. In the end, he tried to validate the beliefs of people who abused him, and he loses his life.
Not gonna say shit about pseudo-Geto. That's a whole fucking can of worms that I'd love to open, but can't. I hope you found some value in this.

    For anyone wondering about Gojo.
Infinity slows down anything infinitly meaning touching Gojo through normal means is impossible, think of it making you travel the numbers between 0 and 1, or I guess more accurately making you travel all whole numbers as the decimals between 0-1 contain litterally more digits
Blue creates a negative distance in a positive area, reality corrects this which pulls all mass, think of a black hole for example. He can apply this to his cursed energy, pulling you and pulling you away. He can also teleport using this
Red is the reversal infused with positive energy, instead of the properties of a blackhole its the properties of a whitehole, pushing all mass away.
Hollow purple is multiplying red and blue together, creating an imangery negative number, reality corrects this by erasing the mass purple comes in contact with from exsistence, it literally doesn't exsist.
Unlimited void gives your brain an infinite infomation, instead of having apple repeated an infinite amount of times its all the letters in apple repeated infinitely, with all of infomation in the universe being repated just as many times.

When I watched the first season. I thought it was nice but it wasn't at the level that people were saying it was. I did the same thing as you. I left it up until it was completely finished and watched it when the movie came out on blu ray. Which I also thought was just ok you know. But then I started reading the shibuya arc and that's when I became a fan. Because my issue in shounens is the lack of stakes in these types of series. But jujutsu was built upon of that. Its built upon negative emotions. That's the power system so its already more entertaining than most shounen.

I think I have an idea of how it Rct works. Pretend that you're a chef and you need to oil up a pan. The pan will be your brain and the oil your cursed energy. As you shake the the pan and the oil spins and crashes against itself, a certain smell will fill the air, that being the fire and the burning oil. That smell will be positive cursed energy. But on no, every time you shake the pot, some flies out, that being the excess cursed energy wasted, but you still have an oiled up pan with the smell. That's how I think it works, no multiplication here.

I kind of enjoy the visual gags, they can ruin your immersion at times but for me it makes the characters unique and actually more immersive. It reminds me that yes this is some what of a cartoon but they are humans living in a supernatural world so their personalities and how they react is very interesting and it pulls me in. Jjk's power system definitely does demand your attention in order to understand but it's easy once you get use to the terminology.

Havent watched yet but I think its pretty simple. People really like fighting and watch anime mainly for entertainment and less for story. Jjk is really fast paced and has a lot of h2h fighting that people love more than any other type of fighting. So every fight is great to watch since people love it more than beam clashes and big avatars. The power system seems to compliment hand to hand fighting rather than the opposite.

Hence Toji.

Gojo's Infinity Barrier acts less like a black hole and more like a white hole. The closer an object gets to the centre of a white hole, the slower it gets until it sliws down so much that, for all intents and purposes, it has stopped. It's like dividing something by two over and over again, it gets smaller and smaller and gets infinitesimally close to zero.

Nah but fr it's really not that hard.
Cursed Energy - Bassically works the same as nen. You can use it to strengthen phyicals, or to power up a technique.
Reversed Cursed energy: An inverse version of CE. You can use it for a reversal tequnique, or for RCT
    Cursed Technique:
Basically just a unique ablity you are born with. Sometimes it is passed down through familiy. (Ten Shadows, Idle Transfiguration, Blood Manipulation) Stuff like Black Flash is not unique and therfore not a cursed technique.
RCT: Healing bassically. It can also destroy curses faster if you can use it on others
Reversal Technique: The opposite version of a CT. Not every technique has it. (Ex. Gojo's Red is a reversal of Blue)
    Maximum Tecqnique:
A super move that isnt a domain. Stuff like Jogo's maximum metor or Geto's uzumaki
    Output:
Basically how much cursed energy goes into a move. Max output means you are putting as much energy as you can into a move. Unrelated to Maximum Tecniques.
    Domain Expansion:
A special move that requires a CT to use. Forces your opponent to be hit by an ability unless they use an anti domain teqnique.
    Anti Domain Stuff:
New Shadow Style: Basically a small forcefield that protects against CTs and Domains. It can get destroyed very easily though.
    Falling Blossom Emotion:
Instead of blocking the attack, it counters the second you get hit by one, lowering the damage done.
This seems like a lot but it's pretty intuitve in my opinion
