Once it was revealed that the reason for Aang being in the iceberg was not because of his personal human moment of weakness to run away from his responsibilities but because he went off to clear his head, I was already done with the show. I knew from that point on that this show was not going to honor the weaknesses and flaws of the characters that they have to go through.
And spoiler alert, that's exactly what happened.

What made me lose my mind is the Pakku and Katara Conflict.
Katara Challenge him to a waterbending duel. Ok cool. That scene happens.
Pakku: You are an excellent waterbender. But I will not teach you because you’re a woman. Oh no, the Fire Nation are invading the tribe. Ok, I here by now label you a master waterbender and send you one of my pupils as your troops to command.
I legit paused that scene and just flabbergasted for an hour.

    • @insignia9325
      @insignia9325 6 месяцев назад +6

The water bending they had during the fight was so cringe too. They used slides to shorten distances between each other during the battle. In the live action, they did it to flex who can skate better. That was so cringeworthy.

    • @sophieamandaleitontoomey9343
      @sophieamandaleitontoomey9343 6 месяцев назад

And it also ruins the fact that they both are supposed to learn from each other. Katara showed him the consequences of his mindset with losing Kana and in turn, he allows her to truly harness her ability. And because of that, not only does Katara become the top of the class, the man who once told Katara no to training her becomes apart of her family.
None of it works in the live action because the show refuses to acknowledge the sexist culture of the Northern Water Tribe and how this mentality has to change.

The beginning was dreadful to watch, the middle part wasn’t too bad with the intertwining storylines but it was poorly dialogued, but the ending was horrendous.
I literally asked myself if I was watching a Netflix adult mature show or a children’s show. Sure, they can’t do it all but they can add bits. Increase the run time to 58 minutes, we don’t need 10 minutes end credits. The original had its balance between humor and maturity within 22 minutes and a lot happened.

Show was a mixed bag for me. I actually thought Aang was good (but that might be in comparison to Katara). The only time he really gets to goof off was the air scooter gag, and it was a great little moment! The show needed like 10 more scenes just like that!
Both Aang and Sokka start way too serious, when they shouldn't be that way at least until Book 3. For an arc to grow and develop, it gives their characterizations nowhere to go.

I dont like how much they changed. So much of it for the worse and for virtually no reason, no wonder the Avatar writer left. I think making minor changes and leaving some parts out would be fine, but this show is supposed to be canon. What I really wanted for them to do with this show is expand on the previous show. They said that they were going to EXPAND on the Avatar universe... but what was expanded? The season was even shorter than the original, how are you supposed to expand that way? I wanted to learn more about the world and the characters, but we learned virtually nothing new. I also wish there was more comedy/the kids actually acting like kids to make it more believable. I get making the show more mature, but our main characters are still children, they have to act that way or it breaks immersion. Its like the writers have never met a child before. I also dont like how they took away Sokka's sexism. Thats a huge part of his character development and it made sense the way he grew up. That was basically 75% of his growth gone. They said in a post that they were going to tone down Sokka's sexism but... why? Did they think that having a sexist main character would make it so they're condoning sexism or something? Everyone has flaws, and I think exploring them and watching them grow is very interesting including sexist people.
There were a few changes that I liked, like you said the conversation that Zuko and Aang had was nice, but I wish Zuko mentioned the reason he was after Aang. Just off the top of my head, something like, "3 years ago I lost everything. If I bring you to my father, I can have everything back" and then Aang could relate to Zuko because he lost everything, as well. He understands what that feels like so he would understand why Zuko is chasing him, which I think is important since they are going to become good friends later on.
One change that I hope they make in later seasons is that Aang doesn't get with Katara in the end. I was always uncomfortable about the age gap in the animated show, because you know if those 2 ages were dating irl then people would be disturbed. And it looks even worse in the live action now. If you didn't know, Katara's actress is 17 and Aang's actor is 12 🤮 I think of Katara's actress kissing Aang's actor and how young he looks and I want to gag. If Katara had to get with anybody, I would like her to get together with Zuko instead. I know there is an age difference there, but the age difference is better(2 years). Now dont get me wrong, normally I despise the enemies to lovers trope, but after Ba Sing Se, I thought it would have been interesting. They bonded together over the shared loss of their mother, Katara realizes that the fire nation took a lot from Zuko too, they are both equally mature, and Zuko also almost dies for Katara later on. And I just... don't really like Mai, sorry. I also think it would be a good political move. If the fire lord married someone from the southern water tribe, that would send a message that the fire nation really does mean peace now and the world can go back to existing together in harmony. I think that would be cool

Everyone is perfectly valid in their opinions and yeah the writing is cringe and there were a few good moments at best. I will defend the masks episode with my life tho because that was incredible to me. It combines a lot of things well and the performances from everyone set a tone. However I can't say good things about the episodes that came afterwards like. I didn't feel much for yue (I love amber tho they really did her dirty) I cannot take Katara seriously like she wasn't great that's all I can say. But overall I didn't see the show with nostalgia lends however more of a casual viewer. The small nods here and there were great. Some of the action was great and most of the actors did fine. Overall it's ok. Not great but way better than the movie for sure.

ATLA is a goddamn coming of age story. That *specifically* means getting to see kids be kids, while they come to learn and accept their growing responsibilities. All the children characters have been either broken, or shaped by the war. That goes from our main characters to the Fire Nation kids like Mai and Ty Lee (side note, I've always hated that her name is pronounced Mei but written as Mai)
Aang's optimism and 'childlike' positivity *brings life back* to the people he meets. Katara literally says that in the original pilot. There's so many popular videos about Katara, and how she was forced to grow up so fast and how Aang helped her relax and enjoy a moment to act her age, as a 14 year old kid.
The original show also did a great job at pacing, taking it's time to reveal Aang's dark secret of running away, and sprinkling hints of his secret here and there until it's revealed.
If you have him be a totally serious and stoic 'ready to be the avatar' kid right from the beginning, what exactly is he doing for anyone? what is anyone doing for him?

  • @sampds
    @sampds 6 месяцев назад +13

I wasn't a fan, really, is a shame because I think the actor is good, but holy shit they aren't giving him anything.
Someone mentioned this on a tiktok I believe, and I think it makes sense: They probably didn't have the budget for it.
A lot of what Aang does to goof around is related to airbender or creatures; like penguing sleeding, or the multiple tricks he normally does.
This is the exact problem I feel people are constantly running with these live actions: Too many of these things you can't make it look good without stupid amounts of money; that's why Momo and Appa felt like an after thought in this show, they look good here, but they aren't cheap so you can probably count their appearances.
Is kind of hilarious how even if you adjust inflation on how much cost an episode on the original show, it is a fraction of the cost that was 20 minutes of one episode in this show. Because when is animation, as long as everything has a cohesive art style, you can get around it.
I am half wondering if Vex said Aang's age wrong on purpose just so people would comment more on it, because if that's the case, that's smart.

I agree 100% with this. Unfortunately they decided to go with a young actor AND try to make this more serious/adult. The problem is, this kid doesn't have the experience to really pull this off and this is why it feels like a kid reading a 40 year old's lines. And instead of playing to his strengths which would be, being a kid. The contrast of Aang being a kid and being serious would have played off better. But instead they're trying to be too serious which is too much to ask of this kid actor. For me I can't stand it I don't like the actor as Aang and it's not his fault, they set him up to fail.

You're pretty much spot on but the one thing I don't agree with you is that in the original why Aang feels suddenly betrayed by his friends and loved ones is because the fact that he was revealed as the avatar. There were no outward signs that he was the avatar, which was why he was just another kid and he had friends who played with him. If there were signs of him being more powerful from the get go, his friends abandoning him wouldn't be a shock to him because it would have always been the case (Like how it shows in the live action where Aang literally airbends a kid out of a cliff). It won't change anything about how others feel about him if it was evident that Aang was a prodigy or the Avatar. He'd already be pretty depressed if that were the case. Which to be fair would justify his all serious behavior in the live action

Sokka answers with "But he is just a kid" and Aang also agrees very amused with Sokka "He is right! :D". Even the cartoon knew that he is a silly kid in the start. I think Netflix TRIED to do something very different with Aang, making him so serious and stressed about being the Avatar and what it really meant, leading him to getting carried over by the enraged spirits over the Northern Water Tribe. Then Katara reminded him that he was loved and more than just the Avatar, calming him down and bringing him back from the spirit-fused form.
But it somehow didn't feel as impactful as it sounds in theory.

    Good additions:
    - nice touch right off the start how the fire nation attacked and when
    - nice explanation why the squad (41i think) hat accompanies suko was important the entire time and why they travel with him.
    - getting more of Suko and Iroh interactions is fire
-Aang and Iroh's interaction in jail
    - Suko being the main hero
    Very upsetting moments:
    - the Aang actor is more of a kid on set than he is supposed to play in the series
    - he speaks as if he is already volume 3 and went through all that journey
    - Katara constantly is wiser than everyone, having never bend water, yet gets called a master by a watwrbending master who has been studying for years just because he called him sexist.
    - sokka's sexism was eradicated because it's bad, entirely making the confrontation he had with Sukki nullified, however they somehow got it good anyway.
    - they squeezed the episode of the forest guardian HeiBai being upset, together with Roku's comet and Koh, which made 0 sence since they never resolved HeiBai's anger by collecting the acorn.
    - Aang ended up on the crescent moon island to see Roku about the comet, yet he gets collected off the Island by the goth chick and her sniffing monster... oversees.... from an island... back and forth .. faster than Suko and his ship?????
    - Aang never bending water once, despite him needing to do so. In the series he fooled around and found out he has talent for everything, as Suko once said, just like Asula.
    - the never round up season one and immediately leave for the earth kingdom to come in season 2 with no reason. In the animated series, we counted, there were 3 episodes with them bring at the north pole. That makes it harder to tell how long they were there, however making it clear they were there longer than any other place, probably weeks.
    - Aang's constant mood swings that he is a kid, but yet he needs to be the Avatar. Dont get me wrong, the struggle is fine. But the constant emotional swing is not. By the end of the season, he is upset, bitter, like a 40y/o and then everything works out fine as if nothing happened when they decide to leave for the earth kingdom.
    - why the hell is our beloved goth girl and Asula both diabetic????
    - why were the bad 3 already announced in the 1 season? They make no appearance until season 2 as the main villains.
    - Yui is a girl boss. It's fine. But THE Yui was very feminine, very gentle, compassionate and just like a nun. I did not like this laid back Ava we got.
    - there's a meme on the net about Katara and Sokka actors resembling the actors from season 3 theater than the actual cast.
    - every character that wasn't rewritten in any way, as Suko, Iroh, Chao were fine. As soon as they rewrote characters like Sokka and Katara, it made them super unsympathetic to me.
    - The secret tunnel of love that Katara and Sokka ended up in... just... no
    - they fear for dear gods life to add filler episodes or anything that is considered humor because they are afrsid to overfill it with fillers. But funny, those fillers made the show amazing by showing more of the world building.

I feel like people are insecure about animation or videogames so they push for a live adaption because they see the live version as more respected/legitimate when often the base is good because its animation/videogame. A videogame is the superior art form for the type of experience it wishes to express, why lower it to a film? At most you will get ‘could have just played the game/read the book/watched the show’.
