    Some background about what is going on: you can see from the first scenes that the guitarist used to be much heavier. He was told by his doctor that he needed to lose weight for his health and he did. A lot of fans were not happy about him changing his appearance so much and would go online and tell him that he looked better and that they liked him better when he was heavier. This song and video is his response to those people. You see the reference to the excess food and aerobic classes and the puking on the girl talking about how much better he used to be speaks for itself.

      Great summary! I would add that this is a re-definition of their song "maximum the hormone". In the first song, they were kind of advocating for having unhealthy diets, eating "kottelee (thick and oily)" ramen all the time. "Menkata Kottelee" is their band motto and many fans followed their style. After Ryo had his health issues he has now redefined their band motto in this second song. In the lyrics, he says "Kottelee=Ikizama desu" which means "Kottelee=lifestyle". Now he is aiming for a thick and meaningful lifestyle rather than literally meaning thick and oily ramen. I really got goosebumps when I first heard those lyrics. It's hard to understand without knowing the decade of history behind it, but it's so cool.

      Ha! I love them and it took me over a decade from the 1st time I heard them (Death Note) to when I finally learned their name. The excitement I felt when I accidentally found them had me bouncing around my room to their songs all night lol. I love how weird and abnormal their music is and it works so smoothly

      Every time I heard "What is going on" sat here laughing going "MTH Is Going On!" and every time I was smiling because I loved seeing that reaction. Is that? Is she singing? Is that the drummer? Is he singing? And he is picking his nose...Yep that is MTH and you can expect that from all their tracks. They are an acid trip in a Mclaren F1 going 200+MPH on a icy road while some tiny green man in a space ship is beaming crazy mad tunes into your skull...and its all good.

  • @2abug
    @2abug 3 года назад +100

    Yes Nao the drummer is singing the "disco" part. And she's also Akane's (BAND-MAID) favorite drummer. Nao is the reason why Akane pursued drumming intensely. For next MTH songs please check out "Zetsubō Billy", "What's Up, People?!", "Koi no Mega Lover", "Yoshū Fukushū" (my favorite), "Benjo Sandal Dance", "A-L-I-E-N", "Koi no Sperm" 🙏🏻

    Hi OldSkuleNerd. Everyone gets confused when they see this band for the first time.
    In Japan, BAND-MAID dru. AKANE, NEMOPHILA dru. TAM, etc. There are many drummers who have been greatly influenced by the drummer NAO of MAXIMUM THE HORMONE. Both AKANE and TAM started playing drums with their copies.
    By the way, drummer and guitarist are siblings.

    As mentioned before. The song is about fans who were critical of the guitarist Ryo who lost weight. He was told by doctors if he didn't loose weight he would die. He did and some fans said the like the way looked better when he was fat and were critical of him. The girl at the beginning represented one of those fans. The part at the end where he is yelling into the megaphone he is listing medical problems associated with obesity. Keep them up 🤘😁🤘

    Yeah, the drummer (Nao) sings the female vocal parts; she's a dynamo. Akane (Band-Maid drummer) credits her discovery of Nao's drumming as a huge early inspiration for her. Max the Hormone for me is another band that is emblematic of the unique and creative music scene going on in Japan - an understated modern mecca of rock and metal.

    Oh man so I just got a chance to sit down with this and it was up on the TV I was so pumped. I am so glad you were overwhelmed as weird as it is to say. The song does go freaking everywhere which is why I chose it because I knew it had the best chance to pull you in. Every member has there spotlight and yes as everyone said that is Nao singing.
    The backstory is that Ryo lost a lot of weight for his health and the "fans" as represented in the beginning of the video were like but we don't like this, bring back our tubby Ryo. The song progresses with his feelings of starving everyday and the pain of trying to get better then being told no don't work out, it's bad. It's an assault on all sides and his response of he's never going back to the hospital, never feeling the pain again. The very end is a speech about the statistics of disease like diabetes and even gaut and the numbers in Japan. What I love most is that at the very end it is almost a finger to the fans because he sits down and eats Ramen because the change and improvement was never for anyone but himself.
    I hope we see more of this band and reactions later but for now I am just happy this hit the playlist for you ^^

    YES! I love Maximum the Hormone!!! Please keep up the reactions to them. If you want more, check out their song Yoshu Fukushu. They also have a sense of humor and have been known to troll their fans.
    The song at the beginning with the montage was one of those times. The drummer had a baby so the band took some time off. When they came back, they released the lighter poppy song and said since the drummer was now a mother, they were changing styles. They let the joke play for about a week before releasing the second part of the song which hit hard AF! I hope you keep these guys in your rotation. Just pause mire often to help avoid the blocks. Also Flea is a big influence on the bassist. So much so he plays the same bass and even has a same tattoo 🤘😊🤘

    A bit of a backgrounder for the start of the video (up for corrections, anybody who knows better): the first song was "Koi No Sperma", a song they wrote when they found out Nao was pregnant. The 2nd song was "These Little Hands". A troll song. They wrote it to troll fans. After a long hiatus due to Nao's pregnancy, rumors started spreading that they will stop playing heavy stuff. Nao, being a new mother, would be more mellow. So they released that song sounding all poppy walking around the park smiling at babies. Then a week later they updated the video, this time being cut and went into the song "Maximum The Hormone" which you should look into. Just be careful because there's an edited/shortened version of it. Obviously go for the longer one.

    Anyone remember the old "Frog in the Blender" interactive GIF from the late 1990's where you could press 10 different speed buttons and watch the results. MTH is a bit like that. They'll switch things up at totally unpredictable intervals. You never know what is coming. Eventually though, they are going to hit one of the high speed buttons and everything is going to go splat.

    Ryo (MTR, guitar) was appeared to be diagnosed with gout, a sometimes acute inflammatory arthritic joint condition that is usually painful. It usually affects the lower extremities (knees and ankles) but can also affect the finger joints. So Ryo (sounds like "Rio") had to go on a diet free of red meat, limited alcohol etc, perhaps, so that he could continue to play the guitar, and be pain-free. Simple solution, with a side-effect of losing weight. Some fans commented that they liked the more big-boned Ryo. So, this song was the "rebuttal" of that experience? Brilliant!

    Maximum the Hormone is awesome, but beware that their label is known to issue copyright strikes. If you react to them again, two awesome songs are "A-L-I-E-N" and "Buiikikaesu" (though you will need to do a google video search to find the second one on dailymotion - it's not on RUclips anymore). The band has been around a long time, and especially the drummer, Nao, has been a big inspiration for other women in the Japanese heavy music scene. Akane from Band-Maid has cited her as a major inspiration. She is also noteworthy as one of the few women in Japanese music to have a family, but continue her career (Japan is super-conservative in a lot of ways).

    So this will be a bit of a comment that is possibly repeating whats already been said but first of all yes, that is Nao singing those aerobic themed parts. Secondly to give some context, the green screen at the beginning was a clip of a previous video they did for a song called "Koi no sperm" and the music that followed was from a promo clip they did for their previous album "Yoshu Fukushu" and the vomiting on the phone was a reference to this clip. As for the overall theme of the song itbis about how after the release of their prior film clip for a song called "Vap" (about the bands departure from vap records after signing with Warner) many fans complained about Ryo's weight loss. This clip is basically a big FU to everyone that said they preferred him fat even though he had been told by his doctor he would most likely have serious health issues if he didn't loose weight soon.
    And just to throw in a little bit of trivia for you. Nao and Ryo are brother and sister.

    "I was not ready for this at all" - Yea, literally no one is ever ready for MTH. "Expect the unexpected" is the name of the game with this band.
    By the way, the multi-talented thing is no joke. Nao is a really great singer aside from being an incredible drummer, and Daisuke being an insanely good singer/screamer, he can also play the drums. You can actually see/hear this in action on their song "VAP". As the story goes, this one time Daisuke hurt his neck badly (he needed surgery) so they couldn't really perform anywhere. But they still wanted to give something to the fans, so they wrote a sort of farewell song to their old label VAP (as the band transferring over to Warner Music at the time). For this song Nao and Daisuke switched places, Daisuke was on drums and Nao the main singer. It's a really cool song!

    Check out Sokoninaru. They're crazy in a different way, but they're just as enjoyable to listen to as MtH. Good starting points would be "Gou Ni Myo" or "Tenohira De Odoru".

    The reason with the puke is to signify that the song if going to be heavy, they have the same scene of Ryo vomiting on a TV with static (or close to the same scene) in all of their hardest music videos

    I believe the song is about the lead singer and guitarist losing a lot of weight and some of their fans' negativity towards that. The English translation of the lyrics and the imagery of the video definitely points in that direction.

    Just as a warning, Maximum the Hormone (or their record company really) has a tendency to copyright strike reactions, so be careful. The strikes can also appear with long delays, even years after the upload. And three strikes leads to a shut down of the channel.

      @@delbomb3131 They had just signed with Warner Japan when this video released which is why it gets struck so often. Everything before this and VAP were their old record label.

    Kudos. You are the first reactor to pick up on the theme of this song. And thank you for not mentioning System of a Down. It almost makes up for waiting so long to get on board. If you like heavy, watch “Hungry Pride.” To see MTH working a crowd, watch “Koi no Superma” (don’t ask). Best video is “Yoshu Fukusu”.The lyrics are great. I’m curious to see if you pick up what is going on. If you want to be really confused, watch “Alien.” BTW, her name is pronounced something like, “Nah-oh.” She is the founder of the band, and a great singer. Ryo-kun (pronounced something like (R’yo-koon) is her brother.

    • @smward87
      @smward87 3 года назад +1

      The only time he had lead vocals was in "Your Little Hands", which was the "fake" song they trolled fans with during the pre-release of their album "Buiikikaesu" where they claimed they wanted to go mainstream so they were selling out and softening their image and sound. The funniest part though is, even for a gag it's still a legitimately good song and is very catchy lol. So even when they try and leave their comfort zone they nail it.
