NBA Announces Mass Expansion (1987)

  • Unable to decide between two Florida locales, the NBA came away from a 1987 meeting having stumbled into the largest two-year expansion since the league's inception. Four teams were scheduled to be added by the start of the 1989-90 season-in Charlotte, Orlando, Miami, and Minnesota-swelling the total number of NBA franchises from 23 to 27.
The Charlotte franchise, originally branded as the Spirit, later changed its name to the Hornets, referencing a quote attributed to British commander Lord Cornwallis, who once described the resistance faced in a portion of North Carolina as, "a veritable hornet’s nest of rebellion."
This expansion quartet was also largely responsible for an NBA jersey revolution, dipping into formerly underused color schemes (say, teal & purple) while also introducing pinstripes for the first time in league history.
For Pistons fans, this four-team expansion may have cost Detroit an All-Star Weekend. The Palace of Auburn Hills opened to much acclaim in 1988, a sparkling jewel among NBA arenas. However, in hopes of highlighting their newest additions, the NBA offered each expansion franchise the opportunity to host their own All-Star Weekend right out of the gate, eating away at the Palace's most formative and noteworthy years, where the newness of the Palace may have outweighed the fact it was located 45 minutes north of Detroit.
As a final aside, the Dallas Mavericks paid $12 million to join the NBA in 1980. The four expansion teams in 1987 each coughed up $32.5 million for entry. As of 2021, expansion is estimated to cost upwards of $2.5 billion per team.

      @@lucashenderson2775 totally agree.
I remember in the mid to late 1980's and all of the 1990's, Tampa Bay was sort of a new NFL team having a little bit of success in 1979-1980. Other than that, they stunk. They then broke through in 2002-2003 with a championship, and another this year. They are a lot younger than, say, the Detroit Lions, who in the Super Bowl Era, only managed one playoff win and one berth in a conference championship game. Heck, for that matter, TB has more Super Bowl championships than the Bears, Vikings, and Lions COMBINED! That's crazy!!!!

That one was tough. With Cardinals, who were in Chicago, St Louis, and now Arizona, they have been around quite a while without a Super Bowl title.

Miami was the obvious choice if we go by major Market as most modern sports do. Thankfully we had some commonsense Ownership back then who still understood that Orlando was a growing/booming market that was going to be just as profit driven as Miami was. That has nothing to do with it. Teams protect their best players while expansion teams select just 1 unprotected player from each. The expansion teams are bottom-feeders and are not competing in the playoffs until they have some time to build a winner. Jordan played in a league of 23-29 teams; it's arguably more "watered down" today since the talent is spread across 30 teams.
