I love my Harley rake except mine is a lot bigger at ‘16. I usually run it over 2 times, then run a rock rake to remove the little rocks that get dislodged, spread lime, litter, commercial fertilizer, etc. (whatever a soil test calls for), then run the rake over another two times just to get down 3-5 inches, then the rock rake again and one more pass with the rake to make sure it’s all level and then drill seed. This is just for land on my farm I am reclaiming from overgrown brush. Makes absolutely beautiful pastures and hay fields.
No rockhound? No hand rake? Do you rake the seed in? Were there still rocks? Looked like a harley, seed and straw from the video. I like the idea of the ride on fertilizer spreader. Ill have to try that on big ones. I stay away from real big ones honestly. Too much liability. If you have to reseed its hundreds of dollars in seed. Can get nasty. Question. Do you warrenty lawns? Do you educate your customers on maintenance? Ever have customers find a rock and call you?
brian king there were no rocks here other than a couple by the driveway. We don’t have rocky soil here. I’ve honestly never used a rock hound. Most seed should germinate. We have had great conditions and steady rain. I told them they will have to reseed. They understand this is their foundation not the one and done type project.
Sound like a great customer. The customers I deal with are very condescending and ignorant. Do you ever deal with customers like this? Ones that say mowing has nothing to do with a nice lawn. Or see a weed and give up on watering saying im watering weeds. And dont impliment a weed fertilizer program. Or ones that say needs more topsoil. You didnt bring enough topsoil!
Where I live we don’t put straw down. Is that to keep the seed and fertilizer from blowing around too much? Those big open areas must be real windy. But I’m surprised you guys don’t do any hand raking. I’d like to see the follow up to see how it turns out. Good luck!!
Ryan Berkoski Around here straw goes hand in hand with seed. It is to allow moisture to stay with the seed and allow it to germinate. When the seed starts to come up the straw will turn into compost and you will never know it was laid out 👍🏼
I wouldn’t even want to see this bill for this using sod lol. This is stuff like where I’m from. Where I live people try to use sod and they don’t want to spend a ton of money so the sod dealers here tell them that it’s ok to make a checker board of it. I hate that and it’s annoying to cut. I agree with the seed here. What kind of drone do you use? I see like almost everyone buy a drone and then go back and buy 2 more bc they take too long to set up. Is yours an easy one to set up?
Man I love the big yard jobs. Plenty of room, get to bring the whole crew in together, get all the toys on one job site for a day, big returns, and lots of work.
The reason the formula was off on the bales is because it is probly taking into account say a 75lb bale of straw but if the farmer only packed it at say 60 lbs then you as a landscaper end up running short. But if he packed them heavy then you may possibly have more than enough by the formula. It all depends upon how heavy the farmer bales his straw at tho. Great video. I used to live in Iowa and miss that midwestern countryside and the work ethics of everyone there, the Midwest has the best people in the world brother, don’t take it for granted
Don Pfeiffer Thank you for the input sir! You are definitely right on the weight of the bale. These were heavy but I’m not sure if they were exactly 75 or not.. definitely something i need to keep in mind for future jobs! Thanks again 🙂 and yes the Midwest is great! I love it here
Great video, I really enjoyed it. Nice to see someone pay attention to their seeding calculations. Here in TN we also do 7lbs/ 1000 for non established lawns.
James Taylor Thank you James! I prefer to do things right the first time to avoid future repairs /redo’s. I only want to do it once 👍🏼 thank you for your input! Hope all is going well for you 🙂
Hey man will all that seed germinate and fill that lawn or is it likely you will have to go back and spot seed? Down here in north Florida we only do sod
JD Landscaping, LLC most of that seed will germinate. Not all but most. They will have to overseed over the next couple years to have a perfect lawn but this will give them a solid foundation 👍🏼
Looks great! Love the drone footage! Harley rake did a great job! I have a FFC preparator I run on my Takeuchi TL250. I have never tried a Harley rake but I would like too! Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!
No rocks to pickup? Where we live it would take 2 days just to pick rocks. I also like to take all the track and tire marks out with what I call a groomer that I made out of an old golf course bunker machine.
Red Rock Maintenance typical country lot around here. We bought it this spring and have used it a ton! Probably prepped 10 acres plus so far with it 👍🏼
Thanks for this video Alex. I'm from northern Canada and have Bobcat T300's. Seriously thinking of buying a Harley Rake. Would you recommend a fixed, manual or hydraulic angle? 60" or 72"?
@@nickenslandscapingexcavating unless you buy the new JD 325g. Then you one get one direction without stopping, switching controls with an overhead button and then unlocking hydraulics again.......... Hate this machine already
The reason for going forward is because it turns up the dirt in front and will prevent the machine from driving over uneven humps. From the looks of this plot, it was already graded so reverse works just fine. Going in reverse fluffs the dirt up a bit more. Also remember to make sure your machine is in "float" mode at certain stages of the job. Sweet work.
Nice job doing prep. Not sure the size of lawn but i knew you had to be way off on straw. We use 70 to 80 bales per acre. How in the world do you get away with not tacking the straw? We have to here or it will be gone..
looks real good you did a good job.
Jeff Wilson Thank you Jeff
Those stripes though! 🤣 Great work Brother! 👍
Rufus LC Thanks brother 👊🏼
Awesome video!
Thanks Dan 👍🏼
Great vid. Where ya guys been. Busy times?
Tom Thinks hey Tom, yeah we have been slammed! More coming soon though 👍🏼 Thanks for watching
You all must be busy, haven't seen a video for a bit. Make sure and do a follow-up vid of this lawn if you can!
Koven Carlson we have been slammed! We will definitely do a follow up

Do u guys use a drag after the Harley rake? Do u roll the seed in?
We do not drag. We have a straw crimper to hold the straw down

You are spot on! We love the big sites as well, more work=more money 😎
Y'all made that dude buy 750lbs of seed for 2 acres?
Figures out to be about 700lbs @ 8lbs/1k, plud an extra bag. Seems about right to me, but I'm basing that off a fescue/ bluegrass blend.

Yeah not many rocks around here for the most part. 👍🏼 Huh so what does that machine do exactly??
I'll see if I can get a picture or video to you.
Please post a video. I'm actually curious!
Where have you and your brother been? I hope making 💰💰💰misses your videos. Can we see a follow up video. What is the cost of something like this ?
Grassology4610 we have been super busy! It’s been good! We will do a follow up video 👊🏼
The drone shots were awesome. All that in one day shows how the right equipment is invaluable.
Scout's Outdoor Services SOS Thank you Sir! Right equipment makes all the difference
That is a huge lot. How often have you used that attachment for the Bobcat?
Red Rock Maintenance typical country lot around here. We bought it this spring and have used it a ton! Probably prepped 10 acres plus so far with it 👍🏼
Power rake better than rototill? To seed or prep for sod?
100%. Soil conditioner leaves a perfect seed bed
Thats really cool. Didnt even know they made straw blowers. Also congrats on 8k subs
Kenneth Bastian Thank you Sir! I appreciate that! Straw blowers are available at most rental places here in the Midwest
Do you guys use straw on all your new seeded yards? What are your thoughts on using a slit seeder?
Eli Iacob yes we do! We don’t do much slit seeding but have heard lots of good about it 👍🏼
I wish I could get jobs like that baby steps I'll get there
Triple-D's Lawn Care & Services You said it man! You will get there, patients is a virtue 🙂 Think of it this way, you can learn from my mistakes 👍🏼
clean work.
Do you have a pic of the turf grown in?
How much did that straw blower cost you?
JGlawncare rented it. I want to say 165 for the day
Turned out nice and clean looking 👍👍
Imperial Services Thank you Sir 👍🏼👍🏼
Nice work
Amazing use of the drone, really shows the scope of the project
Luke Simons Thanks Luke 😀
Every time I seed I always need to go back for more straw EVERYTIME I bring extra, always need more
Brandon Garbacz sane here man! Or end up with way to much extra lol
Looking great. How much would I expect to pay for work on a project like this?
5-10k depending on the scope of work and size of area being worked
How much did a job like this cost start to finish?
$5,000, now it would be $7,000
Great video
Thanks for this video Alex. I'm from northern Canada and have Bobcat T300's. Seriously thinking of buying a Harley Rake. Would you recommend a fixed, manual or hydraulic angle? 60" or 72"?
Can you make a video on how you set up the front box on your trailer?
Flash Lawn Service Yessir I can 👍🏼
nice job bro
Jorge Uvera Marquez Thanks Jorge 😎
Why do you use the straw??
Straw helps the seed stay protected while it begins to grow
Beautiful Job Guys
Jesus. Hell yeah you guys.
CUT RIGHT LAWN SERVICE 😎
Man I’ve been subscribed and I’ve always had the bell clicked too but I’m still finding videos that I’ve never seen before.
I've never seen anyone use straw to seed IRL. Im gonna try it. Bet you would have had pretty good results even without it.
Bobby Brown Yes, around here they pretty much go hand in hand 👍🏼
What's the advantage of using straw. Never seen that up north
@@tuckerryan3587 holds moisture. I've seen mulch or peat moss used up here.
That is sweet
Kurt Sweetser Thanks Kurt 👍🏼
Isn't that power box only sopp to be used while going forwards?
Brandon Garbacz it goes both ways. When you switch ways you switch the way the drum is moving. And the drum always moves at opposite of the machine

Nice job looks great!! What is a job like this worth in your area?
Ben Hogan Thank you Sir! 4 people bid against this job and middle of the pack was 6k
@@nickenslandscapingexcavating definitely got to be competitive. How long did it take?
Did you make a follow up video of the growth with this property?
AWESOME!
Just curious how much for a bale of straw where you live?
Dan Yesenko $4 from the farmers. 6-7 at the store
About same here in Upper Ohio, 4 from a local farmer. 9$ from distributors
what was the total for this job with all the grass seed and everything
Awesome.
How much does a job like this cost
Scott Gilchrest all depends where you are
Love the color of that soil! The conditonet is the best leaving the groubd looking great!
Definitely skid steer satisfaction! That's a huge property.... but I love the attachment and the way the ground looks when complete!
This was definitely some good soil! Soil conditioners do a great job with final grade 👍🏼

What do you use to tack blown straw?
@@patriotlawncare6090 a hydroseeder with a tackifier and cellulose paper mulch to glue it down tight. Almost as good as straw matting
Getting ready to do our first job like this, on a smaller scale, great video gents. Subbed!
Just curious.. Did you use power rake? and how did it turn out. about to tear our 4 acre yard a new one.
Wow, that’s a big one! Nice job.
What kind seed did you use
Robin Robinson tall fescue blend
would you normally need to haul in top soil? or you just treat the existing soil
Every lot is different. You don't know until you look at the particular site and also till up the dirt.
Great video
DJ Quads!
Chris Jones always!
Thats more then two acres
Cool
Thanks
That's a Harley rake 🤔
Good job.
Do you need to come back to get straw back later when the grass get going?
Daniel Shapoval no the straw disappears and turns to compost 👍🏼
Use a bale per 1000
Josh Cage Thanks for the info! I think I was close to that but can’t remember off of the top of my head
Nickens Lawn & Landscape guess who bought a t180 and a t190 from Stlouis 🍻
I have to ask why you didn’t go the hydro seed route
