  • Whose perspectives on the past have we remembered and whose have we allowed ourselves to forget? Feizah Bhatti discusses the steps we can take to decolonise our school curriculums.
Feizah is in Year 13 at NGHS. She has completed an EPQ on ethnic disparities in maternal healthcare, a topic which she is greatly passionate about. She is one of our Diversity Prefects, organising the Culture, Heritage, and History Day, and has helped our English department to decolonise the English curriculum. She is planning to study Medicine at the University of Manchester in September. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. 01:16 - why do they need to be "dECoLoNizeD"? If you want things from your cultural perspective, go live with your own culture. I wouldn't wouldn't go to India and start screeching about how India-centric India is, I'd just go back home if I wanted a perspective that more resembled my cultural background.
    This is completely asinine.

We also need to decolonize science and medicine. The scientific method is patriachical, and Western medicine is too white.

And there was silly ol' me thinking that English Literature was about 'English' literature and English authors such as Shakespeare, the Bronte sisters, and George Orwell. Duh! What am I like?

English is a language spoken all over the world - thus English literature can refer to any literature written in that language.

@@rashidadams8327 Don't be silly Rashid. If the 'Karma Sutra' was written in English would it then become English Literature? Or 'The Brothers Karamazov' perhaps?

@@MrGraemeb2022 don’t be silly. I’m talking about books written in English, not books translated in English, as comprising part of English literature… I’m South African and my first language is English. If I write a book in my first language, it can comprise as part of English literature. Don’t mean to shock you with that reality, Graeme. Blessings to you.

      Please expand?
Were there any benefits that colonialism brought?
      Like;
      -standardised education
      -health care
      -travel infrastructure, roads and railways
      -women’s rights
      -trade
      -medicine
      -justice systems
      -homes
-introduction of more advanced technology to improve quality of living for all the countries involved
      Should decolonisation continue?
Should humanitarian aid not be given to third world countries to bring education, building infrastructure, healthcare, trade, a justice system?

God forbid we teach, learn and revere the foundations of our own culture and civilization. No, no we're not allowed to do that, they must be replaced by other cultures.
