I discovered this on my own for the same reasons you mentioned. Thanks for affirming I haven’t completely lost my mind after spending lots of money on lessons that didn’t help. Fairways and greens, Russell
Same as you discovered this by accident today . Ball further forward and bottom of swing was further forward , preventing tops and duffs . Which I knew this years ago ( everyone tells you to place ball central )
I actually stumbled into this setup by trial and error, after much frustration, and found it instantly liberating. Then I found this video which validates that it's OK to do this. Awesome video. Thank you!
Totally agree on experimentation and finding what’s best for you! FOR ME, I have been doing what this video demonstrates and been bumping ball position forward….it has really helped me turn and rotate thru…if I don’t, I’ll hit the ground. My tendency is to “hang back” and flip the arms, which is not a great recipe….pushing ball position forward forces me to turn and rotate thru the ball. For nearly all recreational golfers that are sitting at desks all day or chasing kids and grandkids around with not much time to practice, simply focusing on fundamentals will benefit much more than any massive retooling of the swing….most of us simply don’t have the time or wherewithal to successfully make massive changes. Working on stance/ball position/posture/alignment/grip is more achievable and attainable for the general golfing populace.
There’s no better info than this… Hogan and Nicklaus. The takeaway becomes very free with that ball position, also gradually opening your stance as you go down the clubs is actually moving it back without physically moving it back. Learned this as a kid.
Recently i was looking at RUclips videos for senior golfers and long irons. The video said for 4-5-6 iron position the ball off your left armpit and amazingly it has helped massively. So much that I haven't used my hybrids as much and I'm hitting very high and pretty long straight irons. Sometimes a little more left but really great. So aurprising that I am going to have my 4 iron regripped and put back into the bag. Amazing. Now the short irons i havent used it but I will now.
Jack Grout taught Jack Nicklaus this same lesson on ball positioning(full swing) and Jack was a pretty good golfer!
I was put through the rigours of this yesterday during my face-to-face lesson. I am woeful (at best) at squaring the club face and at 56 though I would never achieve this. 2 hours later I could and what a transformation. My advice is to make the effort to have a lesson (I drive for over and hour) because it is so worth it once you get the real person in front of you. Like most I was watching the YT vids for months so decided to invest in me rather than equipment. Good luck!!
I'm glad to see golf teaching doing a 180 in the last 20 yrs. Years past didn't work unless you were an elite player. Now its more "hit the ball over there" and not worrying about where your left earlobe is at during impact.
Ben Hogan 5 lessons- ball position. Ball always in the same position inside the left foot move the right foot different position depending on the club closer for wedge a bit wider for each longer club.
Nicklaus did the same, adjusting the position of the Right Foot.
100% correct
And ben hogan said a straight shot is luck..then Moe Norman showed him it wasnt.😅
@@mattyburrows9059that is such a cap quote
Gold..Just control the lowpoint and never mess with the ball position..i been thinking of this but forgot it before trying..will try 2day!
Just started trying this and works great on irons. Still need a lot of work with the driver. Great content.
Just had this epiphany while hitting at the range and immediately jumped onto RUclips for validation… and here it is 👍
A guy over here in the states named Jack, made a heck of a good living playing golf with the ball mainly in the same position in his stance with all his clubs. The ball just inside the left heel at address, so you might have something here. Good video, thanks.
Yeah so did a guy called Ben.....this is very like Hogan's stance but that trail foot plays a massive part as well.
Greg Norman did ok from that ball position as well(he learned from Jack)Oh and some guy called Ben Hogan
This is a good video. It will lead to one of two conclusions: (1) the golfer will learn to transfer his/her weight to the left side at impact, assuming right-handed, which is a good thing or (2) that chunk is going to get much worse.
You'll avoid the chunk if your right leg position is correct. The left foot and ball position are constant, it's where the right foot/leg goes that will control low point. In other words narrow your stance for shorter clubs and widen for longer.
The great Jack Nicklaus preached playing all clubs off the left heel area. For me like many commentors below, I stumbled into this and other intricacies in my swing that had me questioning if this is right. After 12 years, it dawned on me to hit the golf ball that is easiest for me although some classic golf teaching techniques says otherwise.
As the various comments show it will work for some while not for others, tried this myself for several rounds and practice but wasnt for me as I tended to top the short irons so the "traditional" ball placment suits my swing type.
Great video, Mo Norman set up a few inches behind the ball - he wasn’t bad !
All makes sense, weight on lead leg, splayed lead foot (even pulled back a bit).
For those of us with poor weight transfer, this is a process that MAKES you transfer properly otherwise you won’t even make contact with the ball !
theres certainly a lot of arguments about the ball position; many of which basically says middle of the stance is okies (depending on the club to swing with). But, taking into account the amount of lateral shift in the swing, the ball placed in the middle of my stance requires kinda steep angle of attack cause its located pretty much trail side (after the lateral shift), at least for my own sense. So, I like to place the ball, basically, in front of my left ear (for irons), and in front of my almost center of my left shoulder (for driver). For Wedges, if I do the hinge and hold type swing, the ball should be located similar to that of driver swing. When I try to use the bounce, a little bit trail side is okies cause I let the face come down without much lateral shift
Ben Hogan and Jack had same ball positions throughout the set. Enuf said.
Content wise… first really good video from Russ for some time. Something different from the same old same old. Great.
Had a lesson today and the golf pro bumped my ball position up resulting in a good ball flight 👍
This is so helpful.. Unfortunately there’s a lot of misinformation out there that hurts your average golfer. I was just doing the whole start at the middle of your stance technique (after coming off a break) and I was just thinning, topping and chucking with very few good strikes. After trying this at the range today I feel like I have room to unload and keep my head from moving around a bunch. Was hitting the ball about a club further than I remember too
This is interesting I think this is the first reco I've seen to move ball position forward with irons.
Keep it simple, 😊
Seems like a great idea to me.
Question even though you move the ball fwd when you open your stance it brings the ball back in your stance righti have been playing with open stance for a week i can finally hit my irons decent . My hybrids great with a soft easy swing and same with 3 wood easy swing . still have to work on accuracy . i have been bowing lead wrist at set up and pre bowing trail wrist as well . im not allowing my wrist to move . Keep them still and smoking the balls finally ! more videos on this would help . im 5 ft 6 with 54 inch chest and not to flexible . the hardest lesson i had to learn was to not hit the ball from the top ! i have to pull club strait down near body easy before stepping on the gas . and the gas is just off idle . i have hit my 7 iron 180 but usually 160 . with easy swing . more videos on open stance and shaft lean with shot shaping please . thanks keep up the great work bro
Might work if all the clubs were the same length but the wedges and short irons need to be hit at or near the bottom of the arc, which is halfway between your feet and then gradually move the mid and long irons forward in your stance. Important to have someone evaluate your swing from time to time to ensure that you haven't developed any bad habits and then hit the range more than usual and you'll be hitting the ball better. This was my experience at the start of this season.
Invest in getting one length irons like I did.
The bottom of the arc isn’t the midpoint between your feet though
What I did to make my irons one legnth without actually having to get them cut was to set the club on the ground and naturally reach down on the club to where it's comfortable. This automatically chokes down at the perfect length. Now you can position the ball in the same exact location for all clubs.
What you've said is so obviously true - normal swing ball position is somewhere between a back foot punch shot mid iron and a front foot narrow stance super flop 60 degree, if you want to understand ball contact then you ought to be able to do the low mid high fade draw straight ball flight exercise, ie nine variations of ball flight .
I've noticed this in practice, but I've always said to myself "No! I need to go back to the old position". Only because that's what I was taught years ago. I'm also experiencing something similar with my grip. Like most people, I've always used an interlocking grip, but over the past couple of seasons, I have experimented with an overlap or even a baseball grip and find those better. However, I'm still saying to myself that it's not alright 🤦
Same I went back to baseball grip. Feels easier to release
as a person that tends to hit the ground before the ball... how would moving the ball up in my stance help that issue?
all that does is also move up the place i hit the ground before the ball.
now if you told me to focus my point of contact and look just in front of the ball instead of moving it ahead/ that would make sense.
also, the further you move it up in your stance the more youre delofting the club which is exactly what you dont want to do unless its driver.
Your brain will realize that you really need to get into your lead side in time. Try it, it’s nice
I’d been struggling with my short irons lately. Moved the ball back in stance. Now hitting better. Then I see this video 😅 not sure how this would help with shorter irons. Maybe longer ones.
Jack Nicklaus - 'Ball position just inside the left heel for all normal shots'. I agree totally with this video, moving the ball around is detrimental to consistent golf imo.
This was great, helped me a lot, finally🕺🏾👍🏼🎉
Thanks , now I know WHY I keep topping the damn ball, I trying to compress the ball at the lowest point of my arc and starting with my center line ahead of the ball , not realizing I’m shifting my weight naturally forward coming over top of the ball! Duuuuuhhhhhhh, no wonder!!!!😊😊😊😊 thanks !!!!
Great tips!
Here’s the problem, I just watched another video where they say almost every iron start in the middle of the stance!
Damn this guy is good!!!
Hello, with your lead foot flared , do you also open your shoulders ? Thx, Rod
I always kept them in me knickers
Question 🙋♂️…. So no change in the right foot in terms of spacing ?
Great tip ... Cheers
Awesome!
This is how Ben Hogan used to address the ball. It takes one more thing out of the setup routine and leaves you with a consistent address each time.
That is stack and tilt.
👍👍
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
My ball flight is so much better and less pull with the ball position more to the centre for the irons. Sorry doesn't work for me.
Middle everytime coz manuel de la torre knows another more than some 2 bit youtuber
Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus did the same thing. They were pretty good.
Stand behind the golf ball like that your def not gonna get any kind of compression move it to the back foot if anything, yea you can play the driver with the ball in front so you can hit up on it a little more, this guy gonna ruin golf should def boycott this lol
Wrong
🤡
In my opinion the ball position is where you hit it the best for yourself
Agreed
