Thanks! can you explain what the original problem was caused by... before the incorrect attempt to ground?.. if there was one. As a diy'r I recently verified my 3 wire dryer outlet was correctly wired... with a meter... as you described. My neutral is bonded to ground in service panel and measured no potential between washer receptacle ground and dryer neutral connection as well as cold water pipe, or for that matter between washer & dryer chassis's.

Original problem was one phase connected to the ground/neutral terminal, and the ground connected to a phase terminal on the dryer plug

@@abrelectric My wife and I use gas dryers when we can. So it’s been a while since I installed a new electric dryer. Then, the installer was responsible for matching the cord to the house plug and correctly wiring the cord’s ring terminals on the dryer. If you read the included installation instructions, you could install a three wire cord onto the dryer without creating an electrical hazard. So I’m confused. Was the problem here a DIY homeowner or an electrician who incorrectly wired the dryer plug? Or had the older gentleman incorrectly wired the dryer cord when he installed the new appliance?

      @@leestokes6761 I believe someone mis-wired the cord.
