It is really wild that in medical school, it’s your entire life. But your life outside/before medical school still exists (family, friends, etc.). It’s so challenging to handle these life events when you’re a med student. Like you said, the capacity has been maximized. I feel like that’s when we learn unhealthy coping mechanisms of just putting our problems into a drawer and saving it for later (or never-v unhealthy). Either way, we are here for you. I’m sorry you’re going through so much. 2020 just ain’t it.

I’ve NEVER understood people who do things like refuse to share notes, put their quizlets on private, refuse to help other people etc because ultimately, all you’re doing is helping others achieve their best, and it’s not going to affect you that much. I’ve just done (?) my gcses and there were people in my year who did it then, and were genuinely surprised when I did things like share my English essay plans on the google classroom and email my German vocab quizlets to my class. It’s RIDICULOUS and such a selfish attitude to life

I feel you, I've just finished yr 11 too. I made mindmaps on google slides for all my sciences and emailed them to everyone in my class. I got replies where ppl said thanks but that they were surprised I would share. To me its second nature. We're all in it together when it comes to any form of exams and if I can help another person towards achieving their dreams, why wouldn't i? Especially when notes and revision material takes so long to make, it seems like a waste not to share in the end. xxx

In Australia, from year 11 onward you are ranked instead of receiving a grade so it deters people from helping others

    • @whyisgamora4191
      @whyisgamora4191 4 года назад +55

The reason why people hesitate to share is because some people don't do any work themselves and will use you for your work. I have no intention of helping people that don't put any work in themselves and just use you for ur notes, might be selfish but that's just a lesson I learned over the years.

really could relate what you said about competition in medical school and getting in a specialty, people being cut throat with that mean mentality of I have to be better than you at all costs. it's something I've always been afraid of voicing in my channel in the fear of being too harsh, because like you said it's not everyone and it is human nature to a certain extent, but still it's very much there and the way the system is built really does not help it. You worded it perfectly!! especially in a field that should be all about helping others, it is bizarre how somehow it is such an individual path through medical school and focused all the way in scores instead of in being more empathetic to our future patients and to one another. really hope there's more students thinking like you in future generations ❤️❤️

Hi soony! Thank u for sharing this video even though you are stressed and tired and busy. Everything you said made sense.
    1. The education systems in general in many countries were created and maintained during the beginnings of a country and have competed to become the best amongst the rest and provide the "best education"... The expectations and demands from them of students are insane and should be evaluated and changed but yeah.
The pandemic in itself is an issue BUT it has also highlighted so much more underlying issues with many things in the world.
Stay strong and do the best you can for your exams, and the next/last 2 years

I kept comparing myself to others and struggled deeply to find the best uni for me. I wanted to go to UCL and Imperial but didn’t know if they were right for me. However I was being fed the fact that if I didn’t go to the best unis I wouldn’t get anywhere. Thank you for telling us you’re feelings and thoughts. Hey Soony, I'm a french med student and I understand how you feel. What happened to you could've happened to anyone at anytime even without the pandemic, I'm really sorry you have to go through this but there's nothing you can do except trying to handle it the best way you possibly can. It's really unfair sometimes.
I think there are two mindsets when we go through selection : the shitty one (you always compare yourself to others and you try to bring them down whenever you can = trash talking) and the good one (you compare yourself now to your best self and you kinda live in a bubble where only close/good friends are allowed). Don't mind people with the shitty mindset, they won't go as far as you will. And no matter what your results will be, you'll still have the world's most beautiful job. I wish you the best

Soony you said everything I tell my parents each time they call and I am struggling with the competitive and toxic culture in med school.
I'm a fourth year student and listening to you in this Video makes me fell less alone, more understood and it somehow validates my subjective impression of everything going on.
I am exactly where you are at. I finished my finals last week that I took from home being watched over zoom on my phone and my body is still in stress and survival mode. I'm still not sleeping well, I haven't regained my appetite. Everyone says this will make me better and stronger but I often feel med school is making me weaker and quite frankly a more exhausted less tough version of myself.
Med school should create strong and confident, trustworthy and healthy doctors but I don't see that happening with the system as it is. I was really struck by how similar we perceive the experience even though I'm in Germany and you're in England.
I kind of wish I had more people like you in my cohort, I think it would make things a lot easier.
Thanks a lot for this video.

Soony this message is so powerful and significant that it surely has universal resonance. Individualism and competition should be only encouraged as far as it helps us perform better and make the most of our blessings and skills. Surely it is not mutually exclusive with cooperation and good will - especially in medicine? Why can't we work together and get better together? If medicine continues to maintain a system of hyper-competition at the detriment of so many- then surely it requires robust scrutiny and discussion. No one wants a doctor that derives their drive and purpose from being the best among their peers- rather, we surely all want someone who is driven by compassion and humanism. Keep up the good work, i'm certain you are doing amazingly.

I 100% agree with this video. Even in the country I am studying in (Bulgaria) the feeling is exactly the same. I honestly don't understand why some people think like that and how they can trample over others to get further in their studies. From what I have learnt is do not trust others, do what you think is best for you and try to push yourself and don't drop to their level. You will be a better doctor because you know that you can get far in life as well as help others, whereas these people do not understand that concept. I 100% believe you will also have a better Dr. patient relationship because of your warm hearted personality .

Hey! Only just found your channel today and so happy that I did. I’m about to go into fourth year of medical school after intercalating this year, that was hard enough during these weird times so I can’t even imagine the stress and pressure you’re under doing medicine at the moment! I’m sorry that you’ve got so much going on and I really hope things get better for you. I completely agree with everything you say in this video, my med school also has groups of people that have their own resources and won’t help and/or share with other people. You’re so right, medicine is something you do to help people, it’s so frustrating that not everyone wants to help each other through med school too.
Never ever forget that what you’re doing is amazing, graduating and becoming a doctor is more than enough. It’s clear that you have such a good heart. Publications, extra points for job applications etc is so unnecessary.

I just finished my first year of medicine at Sheffield uni and I think I’m been really lucky so far because in freshers week they emphasised to us so much that even though we’re ranked at the very end, we need to work togetehr and not think of it as an individual journey and that our success in medical school and as a doctor will be determined by how well we can work together and encourage each other. And it’s actually been like that this year and it’s amazing and maybe it’s naive to think it’s going to continue into the later years but it’s a shame that it’s not like that in all medical schools. Apparently in KCL they say to you on day one everyone in this room is your competition???which is so crazy and sounds v unhealthy to me and I’m sad loads of people have to be dragged into that :((

I feel this on a deep deep level, thank you. These past few months I have been really struggling with my mental health, but sadly Med school is not something you just take a break from until you feel like yourself again. I was stressed out and even the simplest assignments felt like too much. I still had to put in the work and take my exams. I passed all my exams and that means this year is over. I really hope your exams will go the way you want as well, but please take care of yourself in this stressful period.
I am exhausted in a way I have never experienced before and I am still struggling with my mental health. My days were a constant fight between I can’t and I have to. It is tiring. We will be doctors: why do we feel obligated to do things we know will not be good for our health? To help others? You can’t help anyone if you yourself are in need of help and you don’t help yourself first. I wish they would prioritize teaching us that important lesson, instead of waiting for everyone to find out the hard way

I wish I could like this more than once, I’ve always felt like this especially around exams and the toxicity that happens when you don’t do as well as expected, when eve I vocalised it, my competitive mates would go out of their way to make me feel less, and it’s actually sad seeing people ball their eyes out on results day or exam day, and being that we have modules and tests every month and a half I still get really really bad burn out, tbh I feel bad saying this but I am glad for lockdown in that respect I can actually just just relax and take a break,
Thank you for saying it out loud sometimes we just need to know we’re not alone and I definitely think the culture in medical schools should be changed, you can’t help anyone when you get sick learning how to do it, I’m actually quite scared of carrying this pattern into my working years, seeing that it’s become a habit now

From this video I can tell that you’re going to be an amazing person and physician. I like how you perfectly described how I feel. And another thing I HATE about this system is that they have stigmatized our own mental health. We are expected to treat our patients but we can never experience the type of care we offer. We don’t get a chance to get better or get the help we need. I’m not sure how it is in the Uk but in states you’re required to report mental illnesses and will have to go through programs to deem that you’re fit to do your job.

I am sorry to hear about the pressure you suffered. As a uni student in UK, I also suffer a lot of pressure on the final exam. But everything will be ok!I can't imagine the pressure of being a medical student, but students must have the perfect medical knowledge to help the patient otherwise it might lead to misdiagnosis and possibly the death of others. so the more you learn, the more people you can help. Hopefully, you'll stay motivated, you are still a role model, the multi-talent king who represents one of the best students in this country! lots of love!!!!

Kinda scared to comment this, but I'm honestly so glad Soony put this video up. Reading the comment section and seeing that there are still so many helpful aspiring medics is giving me some sense of comfort that I kind of needed. I'm still a junior in high school so we'll see where life goes, but wherever I do end up, I hope I'm surrounded by people like the ones here (mostly) and that the competition is healthy. Wishing you the best, Soony! Cheering you on. We'll get through this.

Soony, i been watching your videos for a really long time and you're one of youtubers that i appreciate a lot, when i saw your post on insta and came to see the video kinda broke my heart????
i'm not the type of person who comments on videos or things like that but when your started talking about the "individuality system" on med school i feel is SO REAL (i'm in med school too so i understand your words), i think that the focus of the career is so BAD :( they teach you how to take care of people and save them but i don't they take care too much about mental heath of the studens and that sucks
i hope you're doing well, taking care of yourself and don't stress out too much. you seems to be very affect by the "thing" that happend in your life a couple of weeks ago so i really expect things get better for you soon because you deserve it, in case you need a break from youtube please don't feel bad about it, i think us (the suscribers) will understand. Lots of love and paws-itive energy for you 💖

thank you for putting your thoughts out there! i feel like as pre-med/med students we get sucked into this competitive lifestyle rather than being supportive of each other. often times, we end up internalizing these feelings and just accepting the pressure as "part of the process". the toxic culture of med school is really not discussed enough so thank you again for bringing it up & being honest about it! pls take all the time you need to take care of yourself ❤️

oh my god I swear my online exam seemed like a holiday compared to yours I’m being serious... 🤢 like I got exam nerves in my stomach when you mentioned ‘locked screen’ and ‘invigilator’ 💔😨 you are going to do well!! for me I learnt in 1st year of dental school how competitive people are some very obvious and some on the sly... just remember you going to have an amazing job after all that sucking up, hard work...reward yourself it’s hard when you have a healthy approach like yourself. 😁😬 you don’t need any shady competitive people in your life they are just there as part of the process you are going through and it will toughen and help you learn a lot about yourself... it’s how I see it for myself which helps 👍

I understand what you’re going through!
In Years 1 and 2 I was diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis which basically made me live in hospital in Year 2.
In Year 1 I helped literally everyone in class with the assessments, and my class notes which helped most students pass.
I didn’t really care as we were all in it together.
In Year 2 everyone was aware of my situation, and why I couldn’t attend uni every single day. I would ask my so called friends for help, and they did not help.
One boy who was in my group of friends blatantly said that I should attend uni more and that he wants me to fail.
I was so angry, and upset. I felt so betrayed - but I did not give up, I pushed myself even though I was so unwell, and stressed out and managed to get all distinctions in all of my assignments and exams and was in the top 10%.
After that year I stopped helping anyone, I just realised that everyone is so selfish. It did impact my mental health, and made me feel lonely often but i got used to it.
You will get through this. Your so close to the finishing line, and I completely sympathise with your situation.
Just know this, that you deserve to succeed, and you will. Just don’t think about what has happened, push yourself and you will get through this.

You're so honest. There is a sentence in Mandarin, called "Where there are human, there are fights."
I didn't feel this situation exists in Computer Science at UCL. Everyone is so stressful to finish the project and feels a sense of accomplishment from it. There was only a girl in my group who always wanted to be more competitive IN FRONT OF clients and tutors.
Apart from that, most CS students focus on building or executing the project and don't have time to compare who is better. Would you want to do our degree? (JUST KIDDING)
However, most of us are still struggling to complete our degree, some have mental health issues as well. So just remember to keep going and try to focus matters you can do. Cheers!

I know this might not be in line with your video but you made me realize I don't need to be competitive in med school rn or college even, that the important is just pass well and ensure you increase your chances of an amazing job or your dreamjob anyway, cause one is usually so stressed about beating others you forget you're not competing to enter the school you're already in it so just do your best to be as good as you can without needing to bring others down, you're all striving for the degree anyway so help each other out

  • @meerkate1801

Unforunately, the competitiveness, the not sharing notes, etc. is international. In my country, there is one medical school known for this and the cutoff mark to get in has been dropping over the years. I strongly agree with you about medical school not having a compassionate environment. The social aspect of it (comparing grades, so and so are better than so and so) makes me feel miserable. Exams here are oral and we're a small class, so the stuff and room to shit talk about other people is even bigger. And I'm saying this as a first year student. I've also been feeling down lately and filled with anxiety because of the oral exams (which it's not a thing in the country I come from but it is in the country I'm studying in, so I didn't grow up taking them). All I've been doing all day for the past week is watching youtube videos and playing video games, while all my peers are taking and passing their exams.
Regarding the medical students' videos: I keep getting them recommended on my home page, even though I had never watched one of them for the algorithm to think I want to watch more. Either way, I ended up watching them and it resulted in me feeling like shit because I don't study 8 hours/day

I think you should focus on one thing at a time. This is a stressful situation and covid is just elevating the stress even more. But you got this! Don't make the stress demotivate you. Just have a schedule and don't forget to do stuff that calms you and relieves stress.
Good luck in your exams. Wish you the best!
Edit: I wanted to add that education has always been competitive, since we have reached a time where getting education isn't about learning it's more about having prosperous future at the end .We are all living things forced into a stereotype, a path that leads us to unwittingly get transformed into machines. It's all because you can't get a job because of your "skills" and good grades are the only way accourding to how the world is these days. Sad but true.

I get this! When you are extremely stressed due to, in my case Med school application, and in your case finals and the environment that medics create at every level, you have LITERALLY NO mental space to deal with your personal life, it can be lonely and it can be hard but know it doesn’t last forever and talking about it is the best you can do :)x

Well said. I also study medicine and it sometimes feels like for a degree that is about healthcare it is lacking compassion for medical students mental health. Things like releasing year rankings can be detrimental to students mental health. It often feels like I spend most of my time at medical school trying to boost my confidence and tell myself that it is good enough that im still studying and have managed to just pass the year. You're not alone!

Hey! I’m about to start FY1 and I’m sorry that your year seems v selfish and competitive, but you do you and realise that other medical schools have different vibes. Notes can be found in books and online, it wasn’t until later years that I realised the best notes are textbook and passmed. As for jobs, I felt the pressure and competition in final year but now in hindsight, everyone in my year has the jobs they really want and are in places they want to be. I’m surprised too! But people’s interest just vary so much. You will create the happiness wherever you go essentially x
