I was planning to make a mini aquaponic system and gave up after a few RUclips videos as it looks so complicated. Then I wanted to turn my aquarium no water change and found that you're explaining all these way better than the aquaponic guys. I think I can build an aquaponic system based on your explanation. Thank you.
0:36 - two areas, one where turtles live the othr is the filtr area. 11:31 - nitrates usually necessitate watr changes n most nitrogen can b taken care of with deep substrate.
I think your plants are removing more nitrates than what you are getting from denitrifying bacteria. I will be doing the same concept with an African cichlid tank and a miracle mud substrate with Water wisteria. If it works well, I’ll put a video together. Good video.
@@MikeV607 I hadn't thought of that but it makes sense. So what do plants convert the ammonia to if not nitrate or nitrite? I assume something harmless? Every time you see these DSB tanks they're also densely planted (like the video in the aquarium co-op channel at Ocean's Aquarium in San Francisco) so it seems hard to tease out how much is because of plants and how much is the DSB.
Your videos are so helpful and educational. I’m attempting to build a no water change system for my turtle and have a question. How important is it to have the back compartment substrate wall?
Jay the purpose of deep substrate is to make place anaerobic bacteria to thrives and consume nitrate, if we grow plants at the same time, is we make a condition for bactery and plant to competes for nitrates ? What if we solely depends just in plants ?
then what will the food source for the deep substrate, you did not talk about food source for deep substrate (carbon).. how you will feed carbon to that deep substrate, so denitrification happens effectively ??
Hi Jay, something halfway between aquapony and terrariophily....very impressive ! Is there any logic/math behind your choice of a 15l/m pump ? Would a lower flow rate totally unbalance the ecosystem ?
Great logical concepts to keep tank nitrates lower, but I don't think turtles are as negatively affected by nitrates as fish are. I'd like to see nitrate test results.
How do you manage to balance both tanks with right amount of water? does inflow and outflow both have to be the same rate? How do you manage the rate so one tank doesn't flood?
@@Jaysaquarium I'm curious what you mean? Unless you have very soft water, the magnesium and calcium will remain as the water evaporates, slowly building up over time. I suppose for turtles hard water is not a big deal.
Algae is apart of the system. There’s also micro-organisms like seed shrimp that provide a constant food source for fry and slow down algae growth. You can add an auto top off system to balance the evaporation.
but why anoxic environment while u have plants to consume nites and phos , u wanna reduce the amount of plants u r taking off of the filter ? why dont u build another filter with actual plants like outside growers , take a tube from the inside aquarium feeding the outside platnts like carrots cucumber draceana or whatever plants u want ? i have an assembly of aquaponics its now on guppy feeding ipomeas and clitoria , inside my room with some LED spot lights
Plants like direct ammonia, It takes more energy for the plant to turn nitrate back into ammonia so they can use it, they will always uptake the direct ammonia first leaving nitrate untouched till they run low on ammonia and nitrite, Anaerobic bacteria does a better job at denitrifacation, as for watering food type plants with turtle water, well... I sure would'nt eat them after. Turtles cary salmonella, food poisoning sucks.
The drawings are great, but I sure would like to see the actual set up.
Multiple vids on my channel
@Beau Susswein now you got scammed, congrats!
One of the best channels on youtube.

Fantastic video on your filtration system! Thank you for sharing this, many people can benefit from the information
Good video jay. I like your way of keeping aquaria and building an ecosystem. Definitely the best way to make a balanced system.
This is awesome! Love your content. I love doing experiments with my tank filters as well. Keep it up! 👍👏

UNDERRATED VIDEO. AWESOME!
This is amazing! Great video
Ecology 101, thank you!
When you test for nitrates what reading do you get? ...excellent system btw.

Did it work?
Actually I think the plants are using the ammonia so fewer nitrates would be created by the BB.

How important is it to have the back compartment substrate wall?
Its not necessary as long as you have a deep enough substrate
You've created a mini wastewater treatment plant
Great video, I wonder what would need to be used in a tropical fish tank since fish don't eat the shrimp.

Fish food.

I just picked a pump that seemed reasonable for the size of tank. It has worked fine for me. No data or math involved.
@@Jaysaquarium Thanks for your answer. I got no tank but it was very interesting to go through all your videos.
Hi Jay, great video! I have one question: how can we determine the suitable size of the biggest organism to put it in an aquarium?
No easy answer to that....
Mr Jai,
Nice video.
But Very deep science. Looked 2-3 times the video. Somehow bounced. 😂

Amazing explanation! Can you show the actual tank in another video?
I have multiple vids of the tank on my channel
Jay's aquarium cool! Going to look for it RN :)
What causes the denitrified water to move up out of the substrate? wouldn't it just stay in the anoxic zone?
Diffusion that forms a balance. You do not need active flow.
How do you manage to balance both tanks with right amount of water? does inflow and outflow both have to be the same rate? How do you manage the rate so one tank doesn't flood?
Gravity
Are you getting akadama from the store? Because I normally see it commonly in Asia and Europe
Is there a way I can send you a setup of a paladerium I designed to be a self sustaining biotope? Would love to hear your feedback.
how do u deal with mineral build up? do you top off with distilled water?
Nope. It reaches equilibrium.
@@Jaysaquarium I'm curious what you mean? Unless you have very soft water, the magnesium and calcium will remain as the water evaporates, slowly building up over time. I suppose for turtles hard water is not a big deal.
I used to keep turtles and changing water was a drudgery. Jay - Did it mean you didn't remove the turtle's poop for 3 years?
no need
youre a god!
Wouldn't a algea turf scrubber work better then what you have?
Depends on what you mean by better. An algae scrubber could be smaller and easier to build
Do you think it's safe to drink the sump water?
probalby. but I'm not inclined to try
Now I wanna see a photo of the tank
I have the tank on my channel
What's the dosage of h2o2 per gallon
Does this work for salt water fish?
same core principles apply.
wheres the tank?
Yo Cho I’m his house

What! I don't get to see the turtles?
Srry for not including the turtles. I have many vids of them on my channel
6 inches of substrate!
I knew younwere Korean 1 cause your above average smsrt and 2 i just figured younwere you are right?
wouldn't algae be way more efficient than these other plants? why not use an algae scrubber?
For raw denitrification potential yes algae works great. I just prefer creating balanced ecosystems.
Algae is apart of the system. There’s also micro-organisms like seed shrimp that provide a constant food source for fry and slow down algae growth. You can add an auto top off system to balance the evaporation.
Can you show the real thing?
I have multiple videos of the real thing already on my channel

Khan Academy really has a video for everything
I'll bet that tank stinks
