Hi Network Admin. If I may, I'd like to ask you something. First, it's really really good to see a real network admin daily routine (thanks for this), where we can see how you deploy IT infrastructure, cabling, switch/router settings, diagram, and all that stuff. I'd also like to know how is your IT crew, how many network admin you have, how you document technical stuff (configs, planning). Again, you're doing a great service for us your IT fellows.
I guess you could say we have 1.5 network admins. They hired me but it was more work than I could do so they hired someone to help me. There wasn't enough work for 2 network admins so she got put onto other projects. Now she is my boss. :-) And she's a very sweet person I enjoy working for and with her. So now she splits her time between supervisorial work, helping the server team (2 server guys) and helping me when I need it. There are 4 total in the infrastructure group (that's us). For documentation we use a mix of Visio, Excel, and Word. I also use Intermapper to monitor my network and it also does most of the documenting because of it's graphical nature. Nice video. Looks like you have a mid to large network. It's good to see other network administrators real life around. When I have a problem like that, I check the graphics or history of the power TX and RX of the fiber, Next the first instrument I use is an OTDR, ( I hope you have one ) . I noticed the links are MM, don't know why. I use SM if it goes out the premise. You showed the stacks, but do they have redundancy? I guess they do because of the flapping.
I do not have an OTDR unfortunately. The engineers that installed the fiber do have one but they've lost most of the attachments that came with it. Sheesh. So I have to just rely on my phone telling me light is coming out the end of the fiber, and a few switch commands that tell me the dB loss the ports are seeing. We use OM4 predominantly because all our fiber runs are here on campus. However, we have a few closets that are waaaay out there and are in the process of running single mode to those locations. But as with everything, this takes time and budget to accomplish. God bless!

It's a matter of semantics and job duties. I had the title Systems Administrator at a job where I managed both servers and network infrastructure. At another job I was called a Network Administrator and I handled both servers and network. At this job I only handle the network side of things and still am a network administrator. So, I guess it just depends on the employer. God bless!

I've always hated this answer but, it depends. Many people find jobs with only certifications, other don't. College is no guarantee either. Personally, I think any computer background even help desk work, coupled with some certifications are the best bet. But that's only MY opinion. Others may have different experiences. That's an SFP+. It plugs into multi-personality ports on the switch. You could plug in a copper or fiber SFP depending on the media you are trying to connect to the switch. In this case there are redundant links to the switch so no service interruption. God bless!

Considering taking a Course for "Network admin" think its wise to go for it Or try something at a lower pace of learning. Im pretty good with computers but no previous employment with it other then like IT for Apple and Troubleshooting.???
Having an understanding of networking can only help. Taking a networking class doesn't guarantee you'll be hired as a network admin but it will help in any computer job you apply for. Best of luck and God bless!

I had a MCSE NT 4.0, MCSA 2000, CCNA (expired), MCP (circa 2000). No current certification. I got this job on experience alone. If you have the experience, many times you don't need the certs. If you don't have the experience, the certs definitely help. God bless.
No. The first job I had that had anything to do with a network I worked on one Cisco router. Knew absolutely nothing about it. Jumped on Usenet and found the answers I needed. I've worked my way up to this many. God bless!
You can do your best to avoid cabling problems but the end users will always find ways to break things no matter what you do! :-D Smashed patch cables in their office, pulling the network jack out of the wall, smashing a file cabinet up against the wall jack... there are many ways that users keep us in business. I do know in one of our school sites, a kid was going berserk and damaged the network drop for the classroom's AP.
Technially no. A network admin manages a network, a network engineer designs them. Though in reality you will find a lot of cross-over between the two. Especially in business where HR doesn't know the difference between the two. I had a CIO keep calling me his Network Engineer. Nope, job description says network admin. :-) God bless!

I hope on the corporate VPN side of the house, that you are not talking to F5 networks, to use their SSL VPN. I work for an insurance company, as a desktop engineer, and we have soooo many problems with it, and over-seas support seems to lead us in circles. Just advice from one IT guy to another!
Thanks for the advice. No I can definitively say we are not considering F5 networks for anything. We have a list of approved vendors we can use and we're pretty much locked into them. God bless!
It is very helpful but not required. Knowing the basics of any scripting or programming language will help. The only language I really know is MSDOS batch file scripting and PASCAL. I rarely script anything except for a few lines or so. God bless!
What I most like is building up new networks. Troubleshooting problems isn't always my favorite but it can be rewarding in it's own right. I also like that I'm not tied to my desk. A lot of my job is moving around to different areas. Thanks for watching and God bless.

Once you're in Help Desk keep studying and researching. Reach out to the network group at your employer and express your interest. Probably for the best marketability go for your CCNA and ultimately get a CISSP down the line. Best of luck to you and God bless!

@@NetworkAdminLife i have one more question, for the CISSP don't you need to have 5 years of experience before taking the text? after i get my CCNA what is the next cert you recommend me?, i watched one of kevin wallace video and he recommened after ccna then ccnp, cisco cyber ops, python and choose your path, i want to be on the blue team in cyber securitylater on the road becuase i love networking so after help desk and ccna what is next? thx you
