Someone who worked with the construction crew said (indirectly -- not on camera, this was via a local reporter who had spoken with him) that three of the missing were from one family. All of the missing are Latino, from several different nations, who were sending money back to their families in South or Central America. He said he wanted it known that his friends were all good men. Very sad.

For weeks, if I saw a piece of anything fall to the floor, I would break out in tears.

The mistake was in permitting a ship carrying more than 150,000 tons of goods to pass without an escort of tugboat for safe passage. Loss of power caused the vessel to lose its bearings and strike the support. I am sure this bridge built in 1970's was not meant to allow huge cargo ships carrying more than 150,000 tons of cargo to pass anywhere near its supports without a tow from a towboat. As it is the case here, loss of power prevented the captain to guide the boat away from the supports.

Probably an accident. (Which is what the authorities are saying. No one has definitively declared this an accident.) This same ship damaged a dock in Antwerp 8 years ago. The Danish shipping company that chartered the ship was fined, just last year, for firing a whistleblower who complained about safety issues. The crew issued a mayday, allowing police to shut down traffic on both sides of the
bridge, saving lives. The investigation may prove otherwise, but right now it sounds like human error.

Bridge was 52 years old, it was not designed to take a hit from modern cargo vessels of such size.
Also I believe truss type bridges like this are very reliant on their support pillars, they help the bridge distribute its load in addition to holding it up.
If the pillar is compromised the loads transfer in an attempt to stabilize but it was too much and a cascade of failures happened causing the rapid collapse.

*Grammatically and logically, that is NOT a flat out denial there was no malfeasance.* It is saying there is no evidence at this time the incident involved malfeasance. Those two statements are significantly different. Maybe the investigation will reveal evidence of terrorism.
But in saying such evidence does not currently exist, he is stating the plain, simple truth.
There IS evidence at this time suggesting (not proving) it was an accident -- the reports the the ship lost power, and especially the ship calling in a mayday, allowing traffic to be halted on the bridge. Terrorists don't commonly take action to minimize loss of life, although it is not unknown.

I drive across the key multiple times a day and I cant begin to tell you how many times over the last 19yrs I've been coming across the top of the bridge as one of those ships is passing under it at the same time never thinking that the ship might hit the bridge.
