2014 - 2019 Silverado & Sierra: How to Check & Fill Transmission Fluid!

- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- Welcome to the Trick Shift Garage! In this video, we will walk you through how to check the transmission fluid for GM's 6-Speed 6L80 and 6L90 transmissions on their Trucks and SUVs. These transmissions are in quite a few vehicles from General Motors, so we thought this could serve as a straightforward guide. The following vehicles are:
2014 - 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
2014 - 2019 GMC Sierra 1500
2015 - 2020 Chevrolet Suburban
2015 - 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe
2015 - 2020 GMC Yukon
2015 - 2020 GMC Yukon XL
Make sure your vehicle is parked on a level surface when checking the fluid level. Also, the transmission fluid temperature must be between 160 - 200°F in order to get an accurate reading. There is a way to check while the fluid is cold, the temperature range for the cold side of the dipstick is 80 - 90°F. If your fluid level is low like ours was, make sure to add the correct transmission fluid which is Dexron VI. Add a half or a quarter quart at a time and check after each pour. Make sure you don't overfill the transmission as this could cause damage.
This video is NOT intended for GM's 8 or 10-speed transmissions as they don't have a dipstick!
Thank you so much for watching! Enjoy!

Is it time to change your fluid and filter? Learn how to do it yourself and save some money! ruclips.net/video/TkobLqJjia0/видео.html
Eh yeah, the 2019 Silverado has no dip stick, so no way to not only check your level, but no way to add more if you want to change the fluid. Brilliant Chevy!
From my understanding, all the 6L80 equipped trucks have the dipstick and the 8l90 equipped trucks don't have a dipstick but a check plug you have to get under it and loosen it while it's running. It has to be at a certain temperature as well but not sure what it is. Either way, it's really annoying and a hassle to do compared to a dipstick tube. Could be wrong though.
I just bought my truck, a 2015 GMC 2500HD crew cab LB 6.0 in February. Today it was about 75 degrees and I took it for a 65 mile round trip on the highway. My trans temp never went over 144 degrees. I guess I'll have to wait for hot weather or tow something heavy to get the temp up. 192,000 miles. My fluid was very brown when I bought it, so I changed it, ran the truck for a few minutes, and then changed it again.
Change your spark plug as well. I have a 2016 2500hd and it started shifting hard and my spark plugs were toast. I have 182k miles on it and bought it when it had 90k
Hey , do I need to drain the old fluid before add new fluid ?
Not necessarily. If you are just low on fluid you can add through the dipstick tube here. Thanks for watching 🙂
Thank you! My engine sounds just like that, I thought something was wrong! Lol
Lol, thanks for watching! 🤟
I have a 2017 Silverado LTZ… I can’t find the dipstick for trans…
It's more than likely you have the 8 speed 8L90 transmission, which unfortunately doesn't have a dipstick. You'll have to unscrew a "check plug" on the bottom of the pan between a certain temperature (that I can't remember lol). Thanks for watching! 👍
I have a 2016 LTZ, couldn’t find it either. Thought I was crazy
You are not crazy, GM is crazy for making this difficult to do lol. The temperature to check the fluid at is between 95-113° F just so you know. Thanks for watching! 👍
@@TrickShiftGarage thanks. Pretty sure my transmission is shot. I’ll check the fluid though lol
I’m 20 so I’m not experienced but Iv always been told by people too never change the transmission fluid only filling up when low !?
Hi Julio! I've always changed the transmission fluid near the recommended intervals, if not earlier. For our Silverado/Sierras, it's recommended to change the fluid every 45k miles (under severe duty). And although I'm not sure how the truck was driven before I bought it, I'm gonna play it safe and change the fluid soon! Thanks for watching, and stay tuned! 😉
You’re 20, driving for 4 years +/-…and you’ve ALWAYS been told? 🤦♂️🤣
@@1DirtyMuttyea that’s what he said can you not read
All oils and fluids have a service life. Never changing the fluid is the equivalent of a boomers “if we never talk about it it never happened” mentality. Brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, it all needs serviced. The transmission guy makes money off rebuilding them. They don’t want them to last, just like your doctors don’t want to end cancer
@@1DirtyMuttI can smell the lead paint from here boomer
Any way to check a 2019 Silverado that does not have a dipstick?
You most likely have the 8spd transmission. That’s what I have, all I can say is good luck. That tranny is plagued with all kinds of issues.
Si I warmed mine up to about 90degrees and it’s right in the middle of the cold area. Is that ok?
Yeah, that should fine. Thanks for watching! 👍
I’ve got a 2006 Silverado 1500 LT. Afraid I put in a touch too much ATF fluid. It’s reading Less than a quarter inch ABOVE the second full dot. Should I be worried?
My 2013 is in-between cold and hot, but closer to cold, but couldnt get it to 160, only 147 when checking after driving 40 minutes, is that reading ok for not being up to 160?
Hmm, definitely seems lower than normal which is 180°-200°F. Check the fluid level and condition just to confirm those are good first.
I know on the 2014-2019 trucks, GM installed a thermostat for the transmission cooler so it only opens once the temperature hits 194° (I believe). Not sure if your 2013 has something similar to that or not though. If it does that might be getting stuck open which is keeping the fluid cooler. If all else fails, take it to a reputable transmission shop and have them diagnose it. Hope this helps and thanks for watching! 🙂
@TrickShiftGarage well, got it to 160 the other night, was in between cold and hot while still running, then when I shut it off and checked it was in the hot cross hatch...
Hi goog video, one question please, tahoe 2016 transmission 6L80 with dexron IV is doing shudder and hard shifting, I going to change de fluid, do you think to add Lubegard additive eliminate this symptoms? That is that I found in my review. thanks
Did the Lubegard help any? @aiselrodriguez5107
my truck is having a hard time engaging to 1st gear at a complete stop. all other gears are good. any ide what could be it?
Sounds like it could be a torque converter. How many miles does the truck have? And has the fluid ever been changed?
I just got my transmission fluid changed and filter. After about 120 miles after fluid change, I got P0700 transmission code. What could it be? Shop said they added 8Qts of Dexron HP. ‘16 GMC sierra 8 speed tran
Has anyone experienced rust on the bottom of the transmission dipstick? I did the SHIFT bypass to keep it running cool.
I then checked the fluid as i hadnt checked it before and it had debris which looked like rust pieces on it. I read some fords have this issue im worried now if someone else has experienced this. FYI my 15 Tahoe transmission has not overheated and shifts perfectly
Thank. U great video

Hi my friend i have a chevy silverado 2016 My transmission temperature indicates 136°. Is it normal?
Hi there! 136° is pretty low. The operating temperature for these 6-speeds are 160°- 200°F. Typically it takes longer for a transmission to warm up all the way. Mine takes about 30 minutes to reach 190°F so take it for a longer drive and see if it goes up higher. There are aftermarket parts to lower the temperature so your truck may have had that installed at some point in it's life. Hope this helps! 😊
@@TrickShiftGaragenice
Hey. What is the normal temp should be when driving around town? I HAVE A 4.3L
Hey there, so the 4.3L and 5.3L engines were matched with the 6L80 transmission. The normal operating temperature is between 180-200°F. Personally, my 6L80 usually hovers around 190°F.
DELETE THERMOSTAT AND ADD TRANS COOLER, fucking trust me you will save yourself so much fucking headache and thousands of dollars down the road.
I have a 2016 ltz Chevy Silverado 1500. My truck Does Not Have A Dipstick. is there a way to show how to check the transmission fluid on it. The shop I took it to, said they would have to run a diagnostics test on it first and then take the pan off & they lost me after that. So if anyone knows, please shoot me a reply.
Hello, what transmission do you have? This video is for the 6L80 6-speed transmission that comes with a dipstick. You probably have the 8L90 8-speed which doesn't come with a dipstick.
If you have an 8L90, with the engine running, there's a bolt that's screwed in towards the center of the transmission pan, basically you would loosen this bolt, if fluid trickles out your fluid level is good, tighten up the bolt and your good to go. If no fluid comes out, that means your low in fluid. I'm not sure where but there's a bolt on the side of the transmission you can take off and add more transmission fluid into there. Add fluid until you see it begin to trickle out and that means your full. Tighten all the bolts, and your good to go. That's the gist of it anyway, hope this helps! 👍
Thank you very much for the information. But it does raise a question. Is the automotive garage I take my truck to just trying to make money off of me by doing a diagnostic test first? I had them do work on the transmission, because of the clunking sound that also jerked me around when it did it. Whatever they did, seemed to solve it for like 12,000 miles. that was done in 2021 it's at 14,000 miles now & it's getting bad again. That's why I took it back to them & they're saying it's probably low on tranny fluid. It didn't sound right to me, so I asked them the obvious question, which was, would it lose that much tranny fluid in a little over 2 years? No leakage in the driveway mind you. they just looked at me & said, we don't know, you'll have to bring it in next week for a diagnostic test & then we'll go from there. Their test is $90. I've always trusted this place, I take our 3 vehicles there for any problems & they've always treated me right. A little more expensive than other garages, not as much as a dealer would cost, but you could trust them to do it right. They guarantee their work for 3 years. Did they not do something right? Did they not put enough tranny fluid in it? I have no idea, that's why I'm trying to fond out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.
Thank you buddy, great video, I’m about a cunt hair over the full mark, second dot… Should I be worried? Or should I just leave it??? Any suggestions?
Thank you Sir! I've been there before with it being a tad over, in my experience, you should be fine 😎
I had my truck for about 6 months and it was red and it turned that color quick is that bad? Would that be the reason why my truck would shift and I’d feel a small jerk
It could be! I would change the fluid and filter on it asap. Hopefully that smooths the shifting out. Thanks for watching! 👍
My truck doesn't have a dipstick
Hello, my guess is you have the 8-speed transmission, which sadly doesn't have one. You'll have to use the "check plug" on the bottom of the pan but sure exactly what temperature the fluid needs to be in this procedure. 🙂
@TrickShiftGarage yeah it's a pain to fill and check. Like they say, an engineer will jump over 10 virgins to screw 1 technician
Would this explain why I can’t shift past 2nd gear i was headed to work and I was at 70MPH at 5600 RPM trans was at 228 temp but soon as I got it to 55 and 2800 it dropped to 198? Any advice?
Hi Isaiah! Honestly, that sounds like a trip to the transmission shop for me.
It's possible the cause could be a low fluid level, or the fluid condition is (really) bad. It could also be something internally going on with it, like a bad shift solenoid or something to which a transmission specialist should be able to pinpoint what's causing it to not shift past 2nd gear. Hope this helps!
LOL I just changed my filter and fluid. I think I had pretty close to exactly your mileage on your truck little bit over 90,000 MI and yes it was a little brown
can you help me ?
My transmission goes up to 91° but the changes go in very well.
I have only noticed that when going down from second to first gear you feel a very slow pull.
which may be?
Simple and straightforward! Thanks man, you are awesome!

I have a 2021 GMC Sierra with the 3.0l duramax engine. I live in cali and the coldest weather would probably be 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Startup my transmission fluid temp is usually like 70-80. Do I really have to wait until 160 and up? Usually goes up to 100 degrees in about 15 minutes.
Hi Kevin, awesome truck! The 3.0 Liter Duramax is paired to a 10-speed 10L80 transmission which doesn't have a transmission dipstick at all unfortunately.
I found a forum that has the procedure for checking the fluid level for that transmission and it's a doozy. The transmission has to be fully warmed up and running to answer your question though. I'll leave a link for the post here (the procedure is listed about halfway down the page, it shows a picture of a plug you have to remove)

Anyways, I hope this helps! Good luck and thanks for watching! 👍
That actually does help a ton! Thank you very much !
You're welcome 😊
Bruh.... I feel like an idiot saying this.... I can't find the dipstick on my 2018 Sierra Denali. I'm not a moron, but I've seriously looked all over this engine bay and I'm not seeing it. 😅😮💨
Well, sounds like your truck doesn't have a dipstick unfortunately. If you have the 8-speed (8L90) transmission which will not have a dipstick and you will need to go underneath to loosen what is called a "check plug". The temperature needs to be between 95-113°F, basically take the check plug off and let any fluid drain out. Once it's drained then the fluid should be at the correct level, put the plug back on and you're done.
If no fluid comes out then that means it's low and you will have to add fluid which is another whole thing. The fill plug is besides the hot exhaust pipe on the passenger side above the transmission pan (thanks GM). Take off the fill plug with long 90 degree needle nose pliers and then using a hand pump, fill the transmission until fluid starts to run out of the check plug. Then put everything back on and you're done.
Like I said it's a whole thing with the 8 speed transmission so don't feel too bad about it. 😉
I have a 2018 gmc sierra and it does not have a dip stick at all ?? What to do to check and add if needed ??

Do you have a transmission fluid guide for the Nissan Altima?
Yes, right here. It's more towards unlocking the dipstick but it explains checking the Fluid level afterwards. Hope it helps!

@@TrickShiftGarage thank you so much!
You're welcome and thanks for watching!👍
Hey man i got a question,is there any issues if you use another brand of transmission fluid?
Hi Eddie! As long as the transmission fluid you buy says "Dexron VI" on the front label, it should be fine. These 6L80 transmissions only take Dexron VI fluid. Most brands carry a version of it, so you should find it at most auto parts stores. Thanks for watching! 👍
Great video buddy, I’m about a quarter inch or less over the second dot, full mark, should I worry?
Yes
How do you access the transmission temperature on the screen. What buttons do you push to see the readout on the display? Thanks
On your steering wheel on the right side, there's arrow buttons. You should be able to hit the left or right arrows over until the transmission temperature display pops up. Thanks for watching! 👍
@@TrickShiftGarage I have a 2017 GMC Sierra denali. I'm wondering if I need a software update or that option just isn't available on my truck. Any idea? Thanks.
I do believe they have software updates from time to time on the vehicles. What I typically do is turn on my phones hotspot, so it acts like a router and connect my vehicle to my phone, there should be an option somewhere in the settings to check for software updates and if there is one it will run the update. If that won't work for you, you can always take into a GM dealership and they can check for you. 🙂
@@TrickShiftGarage when I'm in my driveway I'm able to connect to my Wi-Fi I would think that would serve the same purpose. I want to check system updates it's not giving me that option I think I'm just going to contact the dealership. Thanks for your help
Really useful information thanks bro
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!
If its low, would I potentially have tinny rattle when im in like 3rd gear around 1250 rpm?
Not sure, haven't heard of rattle developing from a low fluid level before. It could possibly be a loose heat shield around the passenger side of the transmission housing, just above the pan. Mine was loose when I first got it lol. Hope this helps, thanks for watching! Good luck! 👍
having the same problem thinking it’s the fluid

You're welcome brotha, thanks for watching 👍
2017 denail is not in that location
Yeah, GM started doing away with dispticks. I think the Denali has the 8L90 which uses a check-plug on the transmission pan. Hope this helps, thanks for watching! 🙂
They’ve saved hundreds of thousands of dollars by getting rid of the dipstick tube and the dipstick and they’re hoping you will take it to the dealer to have the fluid checked.
I have a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 2wd
When I went in for an oil change , I wasn’t aware that they accidentally dumped most of the trans fluid and the truck started pulling when I would accelerate. When I took the truck in to the dealer they said the trans fluid was almost empty and that because of that it messed with trans and that I would have to change the transmission completely, quoting me around $7k. But I just topped of the trans fluid and runs good as before. Should I be worried of the transmission still?
Jiffy Lube? I'd never go there even if they paid me.
Are you changing your fluid or are adding new fluid to your old low level fluid?
Just adding new fluid in this video. Will be changing the fluid and filter soon, so stay tuned. Thanks for watching! 👍
@@TrickShiftGarage 👌👍
I top mine off but put more fluid is that bad ?
Yeah, you can probably hand pump some of the fluid out with fluid extractor. 😉
@@TrickShiftGarage I did! Went to harbor freight and bought a syphon pump 👍🏽 my concern is that transmission fluid temperature showed up on my dash when I turned it on. I’m in Texas should I be worried ?
Awesome, it's better than dropping the pan lol!
I would be worried! Try looking up "WIT (Whatever It Takes) Transmission 6L80 6L90 8L90 Sure Cool System Upgrade STL010"

@@TrickShiftGarage truck is fine so far! It does reach 196 Max but the drops to 189. Cold start is at 90 but then 20 to 30 minute drive it goes up. Would you call that erratic?
